Review: While Christos Antoniou AKA C Da Afro releases rather a lot of tidy re-edits, he often saves his best work for Midnight Riot. Or at least that's how it seems to us. Certainly, there's much to enjoy on the Greek producer's latest outing on Yam Who's label. Highlights include "Feel Like Dancing" - a rolling, pumped-up revision of a 1986 94 East private press jam to which Antoniou has added a thickset synth bassline - and the soaring orchestration and thumping disco-house grooves of "Heaven". Slick P-funk revision "Tonight" - all bubby synths, kaleidoscopic solos and Roger Troutman style talkbox vocals - is also worth a listen.

This Man's In Love With You (West Loop Chicago Retro mix) - (4:36) 116 BPM
Review: This latest collaboration between Yam Who? and Jaegerossa comes in three mixes, and between them should find its way onto a range of floors. The lead Yam Who? & Jaegerossa Remix is the one for the soulful/disco house floors, with a top-drawer vocal from Ms Wallace, lavish strings and a Joey Negro-esque exuberance. The Boogie Remix, unsurprisingly, takes us into boogie territory and sports a fat, squidgy bottom end to match, but perhaps more impressive is the Retro Soul Mix, an altogether more organic-sounding pass that could easily hold its own alongside the likes of the Dap Kings et al.

Delirium (80's Child & Ruff Diamond remix) - (8:03) 125 BPM
Delirium (Danny Russell & Ronald Christoph remix) - (5:49) 126 BPM
Review: Given the success of their previous joint single on Z Records, "Grateful", we know that Yam Who, Jacqui George and Jaegerossa are natural collaborators. Predictably, they've hit the mark again with this heavy, peak-time ready cover of Francine McGhee disco classic "Delirium". They've replicated many of the original's most potent features - think jammed-out electric piano riffs, heady vocals and wild synth solos - whilst updating it a little for house-centric contemporary dancefloors. The accompanying remixes are rather good, too. First, '80s Child and Ruff Diamond offer up a warmer, looser and breezier disco revision that adds a little more synth-heavy electrofunk flabvour, before Danny Russell and Ronald Christoph brilliantly strip the track back and emphasize the killer bassline on a superb disco-house take.

Review: Through his releases on Midnight Riot and sister label ISM, Danny Kane has proved time and again that he's one of the British nu-disco scene's greatest funk-soul-disco fusionists. We Come In Peace, his debut album, further confirms the Birmingham producer's rising star status via a mix of previously released singles, unheard workouts and a handful of fine remixes from such talented producers as J Kriv, Qwestlife and Art of Tones. Our picks of an extremely strong bunch include disco-funk/boogie fusion number 'We Come in Peace', revivalist '80s soul gem 'Do It Right', dreamy boogie-house roller 'Octopussy', future disco scene anthem 'Good Love' and his swirling, all-action disco-house collaboration with Natasha Kitty Katt, 'Ascend to Love'.

Review: It may have been a pretty rubbish year in general, but Midnight Riot has done its best to keep us entertained via a wealth of disco and boogie-centric EPs. If you missed out on many of the label's 2020 treats, don't worry, because they've gathered together the best of their recent output on this epic compilation. Drawing on original nu-disco, revivalist disco, feel-good house, synth-heavy boogie sounds and gently tooled-up edits, highlights are predictably plentiful. Our picks include the summery soulful house goodness of 'Nothing But the Music (Hotevilla Mix)' by Platinum City, the nu-boogie brilliance of Qwestlife's remix of 'Savage' by Tommy Glasses, the loopy disco-house joy of Mottes 'The Horse Ride' and Yam Who's 'Full Vocal Mix' of Sam Shelley's sunshine disco number 'Groove It'.

Review: Midnight Riot don their boogie shoes to bring us this two-track, five-mix EP from William Kurk, a keyboardist, vocalist and producer who hails from Chicago, comes from a long line of musicians (gospel and blues pioneer Thomas A Dorsey was his great-uncle) and has had a 20-year career working in jazz and music for theatre. The title track features Kurk's own sing-song vocal (think Blaze's 'We Are One') but it's the Instrumental that works better for yours truly as the track's jazz-funk overtones come further to the fore, while Andrew Emil's three complementary rubs of 'Willionaire' should keep soulful house floors grooving along nicely.

Review: Midnight Riot bring us a fourth collection of gospel-inspired house, disco and boogie. Mark Brickman & Yam Who's superb Vanessa Jackson-sung, disco-styled Praise Cats cover gets the ball rolling, the unmistakable tonsils of Kenny Bobian lend an authentically evangelistic feel to 'I Shall Not Be Moved', Yam Who? reappears in tandem with Brian Lucas on a cover of James Ingram's 80s soul classic 'Yah Mo' B There', prolific re-editor Jet Boot Jack gets busy on 'The Gospel According To Jack', and so it goes on... the devotional lyrics may be a bit much for some, admittedly, but if that's not an issue there's much to enjoy here.

Review: It's that time of year when label compilations arrive by the truckload, but this Midnight Riot collection is definitely one that stands out from the herd, because it packs more bullets than a Gatling gun! Leading the charge for yours truly is Yam Who? & Rikky Disco's 'Set Me Free' with its romping house pianos, fat-ass b-line and absolute killer of a jazz-like female vocal, but not far behind come Da Lukas's 'Drop The Funk' (which bites Diana Brown & Barrie K Sharpe's early 90s classic 'The Masterplan'), Domino DB's gospel-infused soulful house anthem 'You Got The Love', The Love Doves' strutty 'Sistahood', Brian Lukas & Suki Soul's Inner City-nodding 'Back Together' and, well, you get the idea! A disco, nu-disco, disco-house and boogie delight.

Review: There's a reason that Midnight Riot's eponymous compilations frequently charge to the top of the Juno Download charts. Put simply, they never disappoint. This ninth installment sticks to the now tried-and-tested formula - house-friendly re-edits and originals from across the disco, boogie, soul and funk spectrum - but predictably hits the spot throughout. As usual, there's a bonus mix - this time put together by globe-trotting scalpel jockey Rayko - and tracks come from both label regulars ('80s Child, Ziggy Phunk, Chewy Funk) and an impressive array of new or unheralded talents. It's in the latter category that you'll find some of the most impressive fare - see Phil Jaimes deliciously Balearic "Nowhere To Hide" and Cosmocomics' kaleidoscopic synth-funk jam "Mary Jane" - though the standard remains pleasingly high throughout.

Review: All-things-funky specialists Midnight Riot are known for their collaborative EP's from all corners of the nu-disco world, but they've got a hot new single from The New Black, a producer who has already appeared a number of times on the label. He's got five slices of party-ready madness this time around, the jewels of which have to be the boogie-tastic "I Never Knew", slo-mo jazz-house piece "A Single Number", and the funky percussive bomb "Coming Back". Hot off the trod!

Review: Following a pair of well-received outings on Ruben & Ra's Retrospective imprint, 1980s re-edit specialist Danny Worrall pops up on Midnight Riot with another five-track collection of electrofunk rubs. There's plenty of party-starting fodder on show, from the bustling horns and rubbery grooves of opener "Make You Mine" to the Prince style Purple Funk throb of "Hot", and shiny synths and looped vocals of "My Future is Clear". Arguably best of all, though, is the sumptuous '80s soul re cut "Secret Love". There's also a version of Hall & Oates "I Can't Go For That", though it barely changes the original's winning formula.

Review: Hot on the heels of his recent album Detective's Story, Serbina nu-disco man Tonbe is already back with a sizzling new four-track single. It's a rollicking ride through slickly produced vintage sounds taking in silky '80s synth soul on "Give Me All", filtered disco funk on "When I Meet You", '70s-style analogue boogie on "Keep On" and the cosmic groove live jam of "Saturday". The package is also beautifully complimented by a Shalamar-esque remix by re-edit hero, Yam Who?.

Review: With early support from Greg Wilson, Fingerman and Yam Who? it's a pretty good bet that this new EP from Surrey's The Twisted Soul Collective is going places. "Holy Hustler" kicks thing off with a slow deep disco throb before introducing some retro hip-house samples. Things go up a gear with the golden voiced euphoria of Dusty Springfield on "Dusty Love", before we are drawn into hypnotic Latin groove of the sax brandishing "BB Man". Things wrap up with a nightcap in the form of frisky cocktail house number "Magic Chant".

Review: Yam Who's Midnight Riot series continues to impress, delivering tracks that sit somewhere between cheeky re-edits, illicit remixes and original productions. There's much to enjoy on this latest label missive, a four-tracker from Waterford-based disco/electrofunk enthusiast Jay Roche (aka Jay-Ru). "It's Not Over" is a deliciously wide-eyed version of '80s soul fave "It's Over Now" with some neat additional nu-disco and deep house touches, while "Say You Love Me Girl" is a brilliant cut-up edit of a soaring '80s disco jam. "Brown Baby" employs similar MPC-jamming techniques, as well as a killer breakdown and build-up slap bang in the middle. Finally, "It's Tooo Late" [sic] alternates between subdued groovery and grandiose flourishes on a delightful slo-mo disco gem.

Review: Those who follow Belabouche on SoundCloud will know just what a prodigious re-editor he is; not a week seems to pass without a clutch of new scalpel works from the talented Italian producer. Here he brings his effortlessly soulful, loose-limbed approach to Yam Who's Midnight Riot label for the first time. All five tracks are excellent, with the baggy, string-drenched disco-soul bump of "Slide Into Your Heart" and dubwise funk thrust of "Money Runner" standing out. He mixes up the tempos well, with the EP's two slower moments - the sinewy jazz-funk headiness of "Open Your Mind" and intoxicating, horn-heavy "The Way We Live" - being particularly potent. If you're after edits that match dancefloor chops with an easy soulfulness, this should be an essential purchase.

Review: Such Is Yam Who's commitment to nu-disco, that even during the festive season his Midnight Riot label is pumping out numerous winter warmers. This Jump EP contains four retro-futuristic joints all of which are culled from only the most neon lit of '80s dancefloors. Highlights include the chopped up robo-funk "Jump", the slow and low, leather tracksuited bassy grind "You're The One" and the tougher, electronic rare groover "Melody".

Review: Irishman Jay-Ru proved his re-edit credentials on the previous installment of this series of cheeky-edit-or-original-production tunes. So much so in fact, that label boss Yam Who has invited him back to the Midnight Riot fold for more of the same. And who's complaining? Well what with the fluty clavinet grind of "Can't Hide", the bluesy lament "The Thrill Has Gone" and the loopy hippy soul of "Got To Find A Way, pretty much nobody really.

Review: Warrington-based 1980s obsessive Danny "80s Child" Worrall tends to eschew the obvious, delivering re-edits of '80s soul jams and overproduced, mid-'80s electrofunk curiosities. He's at it again here, dropping five more soulful, synth-laden nuggets for the Midnight Riot label. There's some saucer-eyed '80s soul in the shape of the touchy-feely "Missing", some gigantic, radio-friendly synth-rock ("Control"), and a dash of deliciously smooth, slow-dance fare ("Kiss U"). Better still is the New Jack Swing-flavoured dayglo rush of "Be Together", and "All Alone", a riotous electrofunk jam built around a familiar bassline and Shep Pettibone style drum edits.

Review: Midnight Riot boss Yam Who? isn't one to rest on his laurels, nope he's always out hunting new talent and here he's bagged Jam Master for an eponymous debut on the nu-disco imprint. Over the five tracks supplied here, the overriding vibe is all about lounging in a neon-lit Miami Vice-era nightclub, albeit one more favoured by Tubbs than Crockett. Shimmering digital synth funk is the name of the game and it's a joy to behold, with the best largely instrumental bits of anonymous mid '80s electro-soul edited and looped into a deliriously glamorous haze. Slick.

Since the early 80s are arguably the coolest era in dance music, that's no bad thing. Mista Shifta presents here five digital electro-funk and disco jams positively brimming with neon-flecked goodness. Highlights include the arpeggiated accelerator of the Sylvester-sampling "High Energy", the raw bleepy soul jam of "Hot Night" and the slammin' electro banger "Light Up".

Review: Unheralded re-edit master Chewy Rubs pops up on Midnight Riot with four more tried-and-tested chunks of discoid gold. The rubbery, delay-laden boogie of "Universal Love" - think slap-bass, echoing vocal samples, synth squiggles and shuffling house drums - kicks things off, before "Party On & Get Down" successfully rearranges a smooth disco-funk shuffler. There's a dash of subdued disco bounce in the shape of "I'll Tell You", before "Let It Lay" delivers the knock-out punch - a righteous chunk of squidgy P-funk with just the right amount of delay-laden low-slung disco flavour. All four tracks are expertly teased and tweaked, suggesting they'll prove popular on disco floors over the next few months.
