Review: It's a First World Problem, but pity the poor reviewer who has to find something new to say about a Music For Dreams compilation: with Bager's label now in the game for well over 20 years, and with the 'Music For Mindfulness' series itself reaching its seventh instalment, you really should know what you're getting by now! Still, it's a formula that works - clearly, or they wouldn't be into their third decade - and if you're a fan of the label's mix of ambient, Balearic and downtempo vibes then 'Music For Mindfulness Vol 7' should more than satisfy, with some of the more notable tracks including the fragile beauty of Valentin Huedo's 'Wonderful Piano', Hess Is More's haunting, indie/psych-tinged 'You & Me & Them' and Willie Graff & Darren Eboli's dubby 'Pink Hotel'.
Review: The term "Balearic" originally referred to an eclectic mix of styles rather than a genre in its own right, and that's exactly what you get on this new EP from Music For Dreams regular Islandman, AKA Istanbul-based Tolga Boyuk. 'Sunshine' is a blissed-out synth-athon that gets more and more intense as it goes on, while 'Simple Man' is a tribal-infused bass bubbler with psychedelic overtones. Both of those two come with matching Extended Mixes, while the EP's completed by a couple of more contemplative cuts, the hazy, acoustic drifter 'Kalpler' and the dreamy, jazz-fusion tinged 'Hemsin'.
Review: Definitely one of the week's more unusual releases, this, as veteran Danish ambient and downtempo label Music For Dreams get some of their regular artists to cover tracks from Kraftwerk's classic 'Tour De France' album, apparently in honour of said bicycle race kicking off in Copenhagen this year. Charlotte & Reinhard's slow-moving, string-drenched 'Vitamin' is very MFD in feel and The Swan, The Lake & I Rosebud's 'Aerodynamic' chugs along nicely, but the standout is surely Subnesia's deep, groovy take on 'Tour De France', with its mournful brass and heavyweight b-line - it'll be an attention-getter out on the floor et pas d'erreur, Monsieur Le Gouverneur!
Review: Copenhagen's Music For Dreams returns with the next installment in their acclaimed Sunset Sessions compilation series. Expertly curated by label chief Kenneth Bager, Sunset Sessions 10 features top-shelf balearic material from both established and up-and-coming artists. Highlights come from Troels Hammer on the glassy-eyed and bittersweet sunset vibes of "Infinita" (feat Clara Valente), The Swan, The Lake & Rosebud get seriously lo-slung on the poolside antics of "Respect The Vibe", Bager and Anders Ponsaing take you on a breezy, sax-fuelled night drive down the coast on "Greece 2000" (feat Claus Hojensgard) and the ever reliable Gerd Janson delivers a typically neon-lit disco anthem with his remix of The New Age Orchestra's "Let's Dream Together".
Review: Kenneth Bager's Music For Dreams brings in the summer season perfectly with this debut LP from Ibiza stalwarts DJ Pippi & Willie Graff. As the Danish imprint' best stated themselves, the duo have had 'a long and fruitful relationship with the White Isle' and this splendid 12-track affair wonderfully showcases the many facets of the Balearic sound. The slo-mo seduction of "Piel A Piel" featuring Jacob Gurevitsch and vocalist Charlotte Caluwaerts opens the album on a perfect note, with other highlights including the sultry mood music of "Art Of Sax", the flamenco-inflected sunset soundtrack of "Volver" (feat Paco Fernandez) and the emotive deep house closer "Suenos" - a tribute to the late, great island favourite Jose Padilla.
Review: Having previously tickled our fancy with a small selection of remixes of tracks from Rheinzhand's 2020 debut album, Music For Dreams has now delivered an expansive "deluxe" version that's genuinely full-to-bursting with notable, ear-catching revisions. There's not space to list all of the umpteen highlights, but our current picks of a very strong bunch include Dennis Kane's chugging, druggy electro-disco version of '14 Again', Peaking Lights multi-coloured post-punk disco dub of 'Synti', Red Axes' driving dancefloor re-wire of 'Kills & Kisses', Rz's foreboding, dark room-ready re-fix of the same track, Superpitcher's rubbery and low-slung version of 'Blind' and Chris Coco's fine disco dub of the band's 'Slippery People' cover.
