Review: Danish producer Mads Dalholt is perhaps best known as one-half of Dalholt & Langkilde, whose 2015 album 'Sur Plus' is regarded as something of a classic in Balearic and downtempo circles. Now he comes with his first solo album and shows that he hasn't lost his touch, as he serves up 12 tracks that are laidback without ever getting boring, and mellow without ever getting overly polite or twee. 'Sitarhara' is a particular highlight to these ears with its hazy, subcontinental feel, while elsewhere 'Gui Tabu' evidences Latin influences and cuts like 'Drummer' and 'Jatak' look to African music for inspiration. It all adds up 1 hour 11 minutes of chilled listening that's well worth investigating even if downtempo vibes aren't usually where you're at.
Review: CheapEdits hails from Corfu, goes by the name of Achilleas in real life and also makes house music under the name FOG. As CheapEdits, though, he specialises in "Balearica, downtempo and nu wave Italo shapes", with the title track here every bit as archetypally 'cosmic' as you might expect. 'Emotionless' continues in the same vein, but then comes a curveball in the form of 'Love Capsule' - the pick, to these ears - with its dark, rolling breakbeats and first-gen house-y synths. We then move into Balearic territory with the guitar-flecked 'Ode To My Youth' before 'To Soma' plays us out on a more 80s-sounding tip.
Review: It's a First World Problem, but pity the poor reviewer who has to find something new to say about a Music For Dreams compilation: with Bager's label now in the game for well over 20 years, and with the 'Music For Mindfulness' series itself reaching its seventh instalment, you really should know what you're getting by now! Still, it's a formula that works - clearly, or they wouldn't be into their third decade - and if you're a fan of the label's mix of ambient, Balearic and downtempo vibes then 'Music For Mindfulness Vol 7' should more than satisfy, with some of the more notable tracks including the fragile beauty of Valentin Huedo's 'Wonderful Piano', Hess Is More's haunting, indie/psych-tinged 'You & Me & Them' and Willie Graff & Darren Eboli's dubby 'Pink Hotel'.
Review: Danish producer Dalholt unveils the La Vie EP showcasing the his prowess for house music production. This collection includes an atmospheric "Octavus" - a collaboration with Langkilde - as well as the upbeat and beachy vibes of "Mosaik" featuring Langkilde once more and The Swan And The Lake. With a deep and progressive "La Vie" leading this release, the EP concludes with a remix of Dalholt & Langkilde's "Sól" - bringing with it touches of melancholic, slow-motion-bleep and pitched French vocals. It's a release which sheds more light of Dalholt's significant presence in the balearic scene that's seen his music regularly earn spots on notable compilations for the likes of Buddha Bar, Blank & Jones, Kenneth Bager, DJ Ravin, and Leo Mas. Ce - La Vie.
Review: The term "Balearic" originally referred to an eclectic mix of styles rather than a genre in its own right, and that's exactly what you get on this new EP from Music For Dreams regular Islandman, AKA Istanbul-based Tolga Boyuk. 'Sunshine' is a blissed-out synth-athon that gets more and more intense as it goes on, while 'Simple Man' is a tribal-infused bass bubbler with psychedelic overtones. Both of those two come with matching Extended Mixes, while the EP's completed by a couple of more contemplative cuts, the hazy, acoustic drifter 'Kalpler' and the dreamy, jazz-fusion tinged 'Hemsin'.
Review: Even by the sun-soaked, life-affirming standards of Music For Dreams, there's something particularly special about this overwhelmingly Balearic outing from Greek producer CheapEdits. 'Blue Bailando (Azure Mix)' is his tribute to the deep blue ocean: a shimmering, mood-enhancing fusion of tactile post Italo-disco grooves, layered synthesizer sounds and saucer-eyed melodies. The four tracks accompanying it go further towards "sunset at Caf? Del Mar" territory, with highlights including the acoustic guitar-sporting Benet collaboration 'Dreams Are Forbidden', immersive Balearic synth-pop throb-job 'OK Boomer' and the rushing, enveloping dancefloor soundscape that is 'One Breath Away'.
