Music For Swimming Pools

Music For Swimming Pools

MFSP started life as the mix series of DJ/Producer Pete Herbert back in early 2000’s whilst Pete co-owned the Atlas Records Store in London. A big fan of the Balearic and eclectic sound, Pete was producing music as Reverso 68 and Frontera with good friend Phil Mison (Cantoma, and an early resident dj at the Cafe Del Mar in Ibiza). MFSP was an outlet for that sound. The mixes soon gained momentum via Soundcloud with nearly 20k followers, and onto blogs such as H-Track in California alongside mixes by DJ Harvey, Prins Thomas, Mark Seven and Pete soon got offers to turn them into a radio show, of which he curated most notably a weekly and monthly slot on Sonica FM out of Ibiza which ran for nearly a decade. Hitting 20 years of MFSP, Pete has consistently soundtracked venues and parties around the world as well as curated playlists for brands such as Potato Head Beach Club in Bali where Pete was the Music Director up until 2020. Since 2015 the online 24/7 stream has attracted thousands of listeners each month, popular for its no chat/jingles policy creating a perfect life soundtrack, updated weekly and continually evolving.
In that time the label began to take shape with the idea to be an outlet for Pete’s productions, the first release being from Reverso 68. After a few busy years in Bali the label is back up and running with recently well received releases from Pete ‘Far Flung’ EP and the Remixes Ep, and from friends and other respected artists such as James Bright and Fernando Pulicino to date. The rest of the year is looking busy with the first album compilation due shortly and other PH releases lined up shortly after.
Like the radio shows, streaming platform and dj sets the record label also follows a loose yet ever evolving musical policy of eclectic, balearic, electronica, slow grooves, nu disco, House, re edits, world, ambient, dub..

Review: With releases on Redux, Leng, International Feel and Is It Balearic? to his name, Fernando Pulichino's Balearic credentials are not in doubt. It's pleasing, then, to see the sometime 2020 Soundsystem and Silver City member make his bow on Pete Herbert's Music For Swimming Pools label. He delivers a trio of original tracks, beginning with the organ-sporting, bass guitar-propelled mid-tempo warmth of 'Mareas'. He goes deeper and slower still on the sunset soundscape that is 'Venus Banfield', before opting for a more dubbed-out, jazz funk-bass-sporting sound on the gorgeous 'Stations'. Pete Herbert naturally handles remix duties, first delivering a pitched-up, synth-laden nu-disco spin on 'Mareas', before turning 'Stations' into a slow-motion dancing delight.

Review: Nu balearic explorer James Bright returns this week on Pete Herbert's Music For Swimming Pools with "The Knight & The Sun". Indeed the track heads suitably poolside for fun in the sun on this blissful boogie-down number, which features remixes by the label chief himself and legend Leo Mas. Elsewhere, there's the lo-slung dancefloor heater "Attitude" and the widescreen sunset soundtrack of "Somewhere Everywhere".

The Gino Fontaine - "Revnorev" (Pete Herbert remix) - (7:40) 108 BPM
Review: In which UK scene stalwart Pete Herbert remixes five tracks by other people and one of his own, to predictably fine effect. The EP opens with the understated synth-y throb of 'Pourquoi', before 'Back To Bahia' takes us down a slightly housier path. 'Orange Chika' then takes a left turn into classic Balearic territory - complete, from the two minute mark, with uplifting piano riff - before the remaining three tracks play us out on a more straight-up disco tip. It's all superbly executed - as you'd expect from Herbert - but leading the charge for me is the big, bad funker that is 'Revnorev'.

Review: It's been a while since Balearic nu-disco don Pete Herbert last released a solo single, so this surprise EP is more than welcome. The long-serving, Ibiza-based producer is in fine form from the get-go, with title track 'Far Flung' offering an excitable and joyous mix of hands-in-the-air piano riffs, dirty bass, flashes of Balearic guitar an poolside synth melodies. That track is first given the remix by Gold Suite, who turn it into a drowsy, mid-tempo Balearic soundscape, before In Flagrantri re-imagine it as a boisterous, low-slung piano-house anthem. Elsewhere, 'Dear Hector' is a retro-futurist, squelchy bass propelled Italian style deep house treat, 'Early One Evening' is an organic, Rhodes-powered chunk of colourful nu-disco loveliness, and 'South Seas' is a sparkling, sun-kissed treat.

Review: Pete Herbert and Phil Mison's Reverso 68 project is hard to beat when it comes to classically-informed disco, Balearic and house music, having shored up on Eskimo, and Is It Balearic? in the past. It's been some time since they dropped fresh productions of their own, so this new four-tracker comes as a welcome injection of seasoned, high-end grooves for the slow but heavy part of the night. "Piece Together" is a natural opening gambit, letting acid basslines rub up against delayed strafes of synth and subtle guitar chops in the most grooving of ways. It's set the perfect tone for the rest of the EP to follow...
