Review: Alarico returns to Mutual Rytm with another killer techno release. Fans of the harder end of electronic music's spectrum will find much to love here. "0 Kelvin" is a noisy, jacking workout that is steeped in the experiments of early Neil Landstrumm and Tobias Schmidt. "One More" is based on a similarly abrasive framework - the key difference here is Alarico factors in woozy synths and vocal snatches. "Asma" is a more conventional-sounding rolling techno groove, with Alarico factoring in some well-placed vocal snatches. There's a similar approach on "Sunburn", with surging chords added to shrieking vocals. Meanwhile, "Drops of You" sees Alarico favour a deeper approach, with insistent hooks and soulful tones unravelling over staccato drums.

May I Dance - (5:36) 144 BPM
Review: Following 2022's acclaimed Optimized Grooves, Mutual Rytm invites Chlar to deliver another EP on the label. "Dopamine Rush" is a tough, lean groove and is sure to become a favoured peak-time track. On the title track, Chlar takes inspiration from late 90s / early 00s loop techno. Centred on a rolling, tribal rhythm, it features hypnotic vocal snatches and deft hip-hop scratches. "For Marco" sees the fast-rising producer integrate swooshing chords into this tough, looped sound, while the galloping pace of "Steady Pace" benefits from dubbed out chords. "Greedy Man" is also designed for club use, but on this occasion, Chlar draws on the influence of Cristian Vogel, dropping a raw, minimal track.

Makore - (4:39) 145 BPM
Review: Chontane is part of a new wave of hard techno producers, and Permanent provides an exhilarating snapshot of his sound. "Graze" sets the tone for much of the release. Set to a feverish pace, its gnarly drums and rickety percussion make for an intense sound. "Cumaru" is moulded in the traditional hard techno vein, with dramatic chords unfolding over intense filters, while both "Schima" and "Lauan" see Chontane ramp up the intensity again. Following a similar approach to "Cumaru", they are typified by mesmerising synth builds and galloping grooves. Despite the high-octane approach, there is also a depth to Chontane's work and this is best characterised by "Vevis". Led by evocative keys, it's a beautiful emotive techno track.

Dusty Lick - (5:05) 145 BPM
Review: The third instalment of Sounds sees Lars Huismann drop five dynamic tracks. Inspired by late 90s/early 00s aesthetics, the Berlin-based artist hits the target with unerring accuracy. The title track is lean roller, featuring dramatic chord sweeps and insistent bleeps. On both "Fusion" and "Shimmer", Huismann goes deeper. Rooted by bass-heavy, snaking grooves, these elements provide a platform for swirling, mysterious synths and some tripped out vocal samples. "Estar Farto" gives full vent to these musical tendencies, with jazzy stabs interwoven with disco filters. But Huismann's focus remains on the dance floor, and this is embodied by "Bittersweet", the swaggering, chord-heavy closer.

Serenity - (6:23) 136 BPM
Review: Returning to their Mutual Rytm label, SHDW & Obscure Shape deliver this killer five-track EP. "Eraser" kick starts the release. Featuring surging, filtered chords and deft spin backs, it is powered by a juggernaut rhythm. There is a similar approach applied on "Memories of Nobody", while "Dancer in the Dark" is a more visceral affair. It sees the duo drop a grinding, galloping groove, peppered with dissected vocal samples and powerful, sweeping synths. "Disturbing Behavior" is just as impactful, albeit with a different approach. Featuring nagging acid and an insistent siren, it is powered by pummelling, steely drums. Going deeper for the finale, "The Last Seduction" is a swirling, deep techno track, reminiscent of Vince Watson at his clubbiest.

Monster Madness - (5:11) 143 BPM
Review: Steve Redhead has been making peak-time techno for over twenty years, so it's no surprise that Eastbook Isle is crammed full of dance floor bangers. With a focus on looped, repetitive rhythms throughout, Redhead still breathes a distinct identity into each track. It means that the release varies in style: from the rolling, tribal rhythm of "Blokhut" to the intense percussion and dense textures of "Sea Choy" and the dramatic chords sweeps on "Bruusk". This approach also yields some welcome surprises. The title track centres on a throbbing electronic bass, while "Planet Phatt" sees the veteran producer go deeper to deliver a forceful but atmospheric workout.

Review: Celebrating the first anniversary of their label, SHDW & Obscure Shape deliver a comprehensive compilation of high-octane techno. Despite most tracks clocking in over the 140 bpm mark, Federation Of Rytm II offers enough nuance and complexity to keep the listener engaged throughout. Lars Huismann's "New Way" resounds to dramatic strings and frenetic break beats, while Mark Broom offers a different perspective. The veteran producer's "Ole Ole" is a dense tribal affair that draws on the loop techno sound for inspiration. The compilation also features other, less predictable influences. Alpharisc's "Flow" draws on dub techno, while contributions from Regent and Invexis seamlessly integrate Detroit depth into peak-time rhythms.

Review: Neapolitan producer Raffaele Attanasio pays homage to his homeland's rich musical hertiage with this mega-impressive techno-trance six-tracker. 'Quasar' is an expert project when it comes to breakdowns and buildups, with spitting synth stabs occupying the oft-minute long spaces between each drop and drum section. While the title track is the main melodic star, an acidic lichen begins to grow on the EP at about halfway in, rendering the whole thing darker and texturally juicier.

Review: The latest release on SHDW & Obscure Shape's label comes from Alarico, a new hard techno producer who is fast making a name. Boya is sure to build on his reputation: peppered with vocal samples and powered by raucous break beats, both "Ae86" and the title track are peak time tracks with an uplifting aesthetic. "Killa Cut" sees Alarico deliver a straight techno workout, but, with a twist as he layers vocal samples over menacing synths and razor-sharp percussion. He goes deeper on the Detroit techno inspired "Lost In Time", before the release concludes with the dubbed out, filtered "The Ballad of Lisa".

Review: Following his appearance on the Mutual Rytm compilation, Lars Huismann returns to SHDW & Obscure Shape's label with a fine, fast-paced release. "Surge" is built on a frenetic rhythm and features insistent rave stabs coupled with repetitive vocal loops, making for a lean but effective track. While "Collision" unfolds at a similar tempo, its percussive groove provides the basis for dreamy synths, and sounds inspired by classic Dave Angel techno. On a similar tip is "Sounds From the Past", where Huismann draws on lush strings and pads to create a musical but driving Detroit track with echoes of Vince Watson and Los Hermanos. This doesn't mean that Huismann neglects his club sensibilities and "Echo" is led by thundering drums and an insistent, looped vocal sample.

Review: Launching a label isn't as straightforward as it might seem, but SHDW & Obscure Shape have opened the account on Mutual Rytm in style with this great compilation. Featuring tracks from some of techno's most talented artists, Federation moves from the powerful deep techno of Invexis' "Elektronenwind" to Vil & Cravo's dense, aptly named "Apolonia Loop" before sliding into the peak time, banging rhythm of Alarico's "I'm Into You". Lars Huismann ventures deeper again with the cavernous chords and brooding bass of "Hyper Dub", while Grindvik pushes the release in a peak time direction again with the noisy, bleep-heavy banger that is "Your Dry Lips".
