Review: London-based "genre-floating producer" NaCL serves up some pleasingly low-slung and mellow contemporary funk vibes on this three-tracker on his own label. Opener 'Get It Right', an unhurried, meandering cut with a soulful male vocal, has something of Finlay Quaye-ish feel, while the just slightly pacier 'For Loungers & Scroungers' takes us into much jazzier pastures with its soaring sax line and jauntily, tinkling ivories. The standout for this writer though is 'Rooftop Vibes' itself, a livelier, struttier affair during which a frantic breathy flute, parping sax and warbling Hammonds all get their time to shine.
Review: Definitely an aptly-titled EP this, as dependable old salt NaCl (see what we did there?) serves up four tracks built for cruising night-time city streets and staring bleakly out the window of sleazy 4am diners. The title track gets the ball rolling in pleasingly squelchy style, with some cool vibes work for good measure. 'Space Junk' has a rawer feel and comes topped with a soulful female vocal and 'Last Orders' takes us into straight-up jazz territory, but the standout for yours truly is 'Nobody's Funky Business' - the keys on this are exceptional, though to be fair it's the pick of a very fine crop generally.
Review: NaCL is the chemical formula for sodium chloride, AKA table salt. It's also the production alias of London-based Nick Salter - see what he did there? - who here serves up two prime slabs of contemporary funk with a decidedly post-house feel. 'Razzmatazz' packs some seriously heavy bottom-end punch, topping its sub-aquatic bassline with crisply chopped brass stabs and barely-there vocal snips (exhortations to "come on!" and an assortment of grunts and shouts), augmented by flute-like synths, while 'Theme From Funk Moves' leans more towards trad-style funk, with floaty, dreamy keys, a soulful "feel the funk, feel the groove" male vocal and competing vocoder snips.
