Night Slugs

Night Slugs is a London-based label that has been applauded by Spin Magazine for developing ‘one of the most distinctive sounds in UK dance music, a mutable hybrid of grime, house, electro, R&B, techno, hip hop and dubstep’. The Night Slugs vision began in 2008 after co-founders Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990 met on Myspace and started throwing club nights in Camberwell and later, East Village. In 2010 they launched Night Slugs as a label and since have released recognisable tracks like Lil Silva’s hyped-up ‘Seasons’. The label is also home to: Jam City, Girl Unit, Hysterics, Kingdom, Helix and Egyptrixx. Night Slugs is also related to labels Fade To Mind and Night Voyage.

Review: It's been a while since we last heard from Hyperdub and Don't Be Afraid regular Ikonika. In fact, 'Details' marks her first solo material for almost three years, and her first release of any kind since last year's collaborative mini album with 45Diboss, 'Supernova'. 'Details' is a typically colourful and synth-heavy affair, with her own vocals and glistening electro-pop melodies riding bouncy beats (think Afrobeats-meets-pitched-down Afro-house and you're close) and a deliciously warped, sub-heavy bassline. The remix package is naturally strong, boasting fine revisions from BokBok (energetic and upbeat, with nods to peak-time bass music and broken beat), Girl Unit (thrusting, wobble bass-propelled techno) and Aryu Jassica (percussively propulsive tribal house revivalism).

Review: After 13 years, Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990's Night Slugs label has amassed a vast catalogue of classic cuts. It's ripe for remixing, and they've duly delivered - with a little help from a whole heap of talented artists - on a 23-track set that may turn out to be one of the compilations of 2023. In keeping with the label's forward-thinking, hard-to-pigeonhole approach, there are all sorts of fine fusions and genre-bending revisions on show, as well as plenty of bona fide peak-time killers. Highlights include DJ Polo and NKC's bouncy, bass-heavy and stab-happy revision of 'Melba's Call' by Bok Bok, Scratcha DVA's punishing, speaker-bothering rework of Girl Unit's 'IRL', a redlined, percussion-heavy OSSX tweak of L-Vis 1990's 'Video Drone' and a thrillingly hectic, sweat-soaked, rave-igniting Bored Lord version of Helix's 'Drum Track'.

Review: As soon as you see the Night Slugs name on a new release, you know you are in for a treat, especially when you then notice Bok Bok's name following. This release is a perfect way to look into Bok Bok's ever evolving sound, as we firstly take in two alternate versions of 'Pure Shores', with the HXC mix providing an unpredictable, almost breakbeat feel, whilst the OG mix gives us a more stripped back approach. With both versions, you can almost taste the magic that has gone into making them, engulfed in stunning melodic precision and harmonic elegance.

Review: London's Night Slugs are back with their class of 2016 and if this is anything to go by, it's going to be quite the graduation party. Be prepared for some bass driven, street level, low end theories as per usual. There's Bok x Sweyn J featuring Semma on the sexy future R&B of "Good 2 U", Helix with some superb hyper-riddims on the explosive and syncopated "Funky 1irst", while label mainstays appear too, rest assured. There's Jam City with the brooding and powerful rhythm workout of "Direct Drums" and of course L-Vis 1990 with the sultry vocals of Ronika on the late night noir thriller "Sweet Spot".
