Ninja Tune

Formed in London in 1990 by Matt Black and Jonathan More, the duo known as Coldcut, Ninja Tune has established itself as one of the world’s leading independent record labels, etching its story into the pages of ground-breaking British music. Now a bonafide global music institution, synonymous with diverse, uncompromising releases and equally visionary artists—from breaking to GRAMMY-winning acts—committed to pushing the boundaries of music.
The label has celebrated a number of significant events in recent years including multiple notable GRAMMY nominations for Bonobo (who now has five to his name), Jayda G, PVA and via Brainfeeder—with who Ninja Tune have a longstanding partnership to release, promote and distribute their incredible and ever-expanding catalogue worldwide—Hiatus Kaiyote, and Thundercat (who took home the GRAMMY for ‘Best Progressive R&B Album’ for his 2020 album ‘It Is What It Is’). The label has also released Top 5 UK charting albums from Bicep (who were also BRIT nominated), Bonobo and Black Country, New Road (whose debut album was also Mercury nominated), relaunched it’s Big Dada imprint as a label run by Ninja Tune’s Black, POC & Minority Ethnic staff, and entered into a new partnership with ODESZA’s Foreign Family Collective (FFC) to release, promote, and distribute their expansive catalogue worldwide. Ninja Tune has also made a commitment to becoming carbon neutral by the end of 2021 and carbon negative beyond that
In the 30-plus years since formation, Ninja Tune has become a home for forward-thinking music and artists who are at the forefront of their fields, with celebrated releases from the likes of: Bonobo, The Cinematic Orchestra, Roots Manuva, Kelis, Jayda G, Young Fathers, Bicep, Floating Points, Black Country New Road, Little Dragon, Sampa The Great, Run The Jewels, Diplo, Helena Hauff, Actress, Coldcut, Peggy Gou, Julianna Barwick, Jordan Rakei, Maribou State, ODESZA, Tycho, Leon Vynehall, India Jordan, The Bug, Marie Davidson, TSHA, ??? Park Hye Jin & via Brainfeeder, Thundercat, Kamasi Washington, Hiatus Kaiyote, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Ross From Friends and many more.
Still 100% independent, the label has consistently defied expectations for both critical and commercial acclaim—manifesting itself with recognition as ‘Independent Label of the Year’ at the 2018 Association of Independent Music (AIM) awards, ‘Label of the Year’ at the 2016 edition of Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards and most recently a nomination for ‘Label of the Year’ at the 2021 Libera awards. Chart positions include nearly 20 Top-40 records in the official UK Albums Chart including a #2 record with Bicep’s ‘Isles’, #4 for Black Country, New Road’s ‘For the first time’ and a #5 spot for Bonobo’s GRAMMY nominated ‘Migration’, with ODESZA’s ‘A Moment Apart’ (also GRAMMY nominated) reaching #3 in the US Billboard Album Charts. Other impressive results include Mercury Prize wins for Young Fathers album “Dead” (2014) and Speech Debelle’s “Speech Therapy” (2009) and three BRIT nominations for Bicep and Roots Manuva.
Having risen to prominence with the release of their 1987 remix of Eric B and Rakim’s, ‘Paid In Full’—bringing their underground sound to the mainstream—Coldcut founded Ninja Tune in 1990 as an independent outlet for their own productions and like-minded left-field artists. The label's early releases were all produced by Coldcut, and primarily consisted of instrumental sample-based cuts, spawning a number of celebrated albums including the first five volumes of DJ Food's “Jazz Brakes”. The critical acclaim that followed saw the duo become noted pioneers of the instrumental hip hop scene that coalesced the following years. Launched around the same time, the seminal Ninja Tune club night Stealth—named Club of the Year by NME in 1996—ran regular events with guests that included Squarepusher, James Lavelle and many artists from the label roster.
Ninja Tune have also established or worked with a number of additional groundbreaking labels over the years, including Big Dada. The label was originally founded in 1997 as one of the UK’s prominent early hip-hop labels, and helped launch the careers of homegrown legends Roots Manuva, Kae Tempest and Young Fathers, as well as thrusting US behemoths such as Diplo and Run The Jewels into the wider global consciousness. In 2021 Big Dada relaunched as a label run by Black, POC & Minority Ethnic Ninja Tune staff members for Black, POC & Minority Ethnic artists, championing new artists across the musical spectrum whilst continuing to tip its hat to the foundations that built its legacy.
Alongside this, Ninja Tune’s Counter Records imprint has masterminded commercial success with artists such as ODESZA, The Heavy, San Holo, Kasbo, Maribou State and more. Seriously shaping the sound of emerging music scenes the world over, impressive Counter Records milestones include breaking 1 million sales of The Heavy’s celebrated single ‘How You Like Me Now’ and 500,000 sales of ‘Say My Name’ by ODESZA.
Ninja Tune’s Technicolour imprint has also made waves in recent years, working with prominent underground figureheads like Octo Octa, DJ BORING, VTSS, Minimal Violence, Umfang, Elkka and Sofia Kourtesis to name a few.
The label also began working with Flying Lotus legendary Brainfeeder in 2010, with releases that include the GRAMMY award-winning Thundercat, Kamasi Washington, Hiatus Kaiyote, Ross From Friends, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Jaga Jazzist and more.
More recently, Ninja Tune announced an exciting new partnership with ODESZA’s Foreign Family Collective (FFC). The deal, which came after many years of close collaboration between the two independent labels, sees Ninja Tune releasing, promoting, and distributing FFC’s expansive catalogue worldwide, while FFC will work alongside Ninja Tune to expand the FFC mission of supporting musicians and artists alike. ?
By nature, the label is continually looking for new and innovative ways to develop its artists' visions, having grown from the brainchild of the two-man Coldcut team to a living, breathing organisation boasting 70+ employees based across the world including a North American headquarters in LA. It has encouraged interactive technology, embraced the audio-visual world, created its own publishing company, Just Isn’t Music, and made innovative use of software with the creation of Ninja Jamm and the Zen Delay—the first-ever hardware effects unit produced in collaboration with an electronic music label.
Ninja Tune also devotes time and resources to working on non-profit initiatives to support the community around them and also to develop a dialogue with their audiences on relevant social issues. From Coldcut’s early partnerships with Greenpeace and others to the label’s involvement with the Independent Music Cup, XLP/Arts Emergency, MIND, Help Refugees, and ongoing donations to organisations like Fair Fight and Extinction Rebellion this has been in Ninja’s DNA since inception. The label recently announced that they are committed to becoming carbon neutral by the end of 2021 and carbon negative beyond that.

Review: When you see both The Bug & Ninja Tune involved in a release these days, there is an instant expectation of greatness, due to both their catalogues and history as musical entities. Therefore, this brand new album from The Bug entitled 'Fire' has a lot to live up to. Right from the off we can see that The Bug has taken the project in entirely his own direction, firstly by recruiting some of the most popular MC's to grace grime over the last decade, including FFSWhyThough?, Irah, Manga St Hilaire & more, displaying their unique vocal talents over the industrial introspective sound design behind them. It's safe to say that The Bug is in his own unique lane when it comes to sonic creativity, from the raucous, rapidfire drum punches of 'Hammer' alongside Flowdan, to the explosive reverberations of 'Clash' alongside Logan. There is a truly individual approach to this album, going no holds barred in exploring distortion and dissonant harmony with some incredible results, our favourites of which include the treacherous twists 'War', featuring the 'Nazamba', alongside two masterful poetic pieces with Roger Robinson, who recites a couple of awesome verses on both 'The Missing' and 'The Fourth Day'. This is definitely one you need to let yourself explore over time, allowing your ears the process the carnage in their own way.

Review: Bad to the bone... Following his remarkable fusions with Earth earlier this year, the Bug continues to flex his finest collaborative muscles with two dirty, paranoid grime cuts. Flowdan takes the lead with an autobiographical tale over a cosmic dirge that palpitates with industrial rawness. Next up: Killa P and Irah who get savage over a sizzling reese bassline that builds and smoulders with intensity of a Hardware night at The End in 2005. Complete with two riddims, this is The Bug at his most direct and dangerous and ready for the dance.

Review: Is it just us or have Ninja Tune gotten progressively better over the years? Whether it's your thing or not, the imprint invariably come through with the goods, and they always manage to capture the very best from their artists. This time, it's a remix of Machinedrum's "Do It 4 U" by Darq E Freaker, who decides to take the original's r&b sensibility to the next level; the result being a loud, penetrating pop tune with a heavy EDM influence. If you'r into your big crowds, big parties, and superstar moves, then this is your gear

Review: When Machinedrum drops a single on Ninja Tune's catalogue we instantly know two things: a) it'll be an immediate favourite of ours, and b) there's an album on the horizon. Here we have "Dos Puertas" from the Sepalcure associate, a tune whose identity is hard to pin down and categorise; the beat is all over the place in terms of structure, but that doesn't matter because it has that typical Machinedrum sound, a sonic swagger that broadly fits under electronica but that also meanders into broken beat and r&b. Masterfully executed and stand-out, as usual.

FaltyDL - "Atlantis" (Bogus Order Reorder) - (5:22) 59 BPM
Review: The artfully titled Ninja Tune Traktion EP finds the storied label dip into their vast archives to offer Traktor DJs exclusive stems to help convolute their sets with a range of obscure sounds and classics. For some basslines and synths to throw over drums or percussion the Bogus Order Reorder of Falty DL's "Atlantis" is an obvious choice, as can be said about the snares and hyperactive synths of the Spacelab remix to Starkey's "Blood Roses". The manner in which Seiji messed with that classic synth riff to Coldcut & Hexstatic's "Timber" ensures his remix can always be left as is, and for something more melodic and liquid funky there's the chiming and remixed sounds of DJ Food's "Dark Lady".

Review: It's been some six years since renowned misery guys Kevin Martin won plaudits for London Zoo, a typically dark, intense and aggressive full-length that showcased his unique ability to blend dubstep, grime, dancehall and dub techno textures into nightmarish new shapes. Angels & Devils, his belated follow-up, is intriguingly different. While the second half of the set is blessed with plenty of robust, floor-friendly riddims (each blessed with vocals from a range of impressive collaborators), the first half is an altogether more downbeat affair. In fact, it's these moments - the droning, dub-inflected ambience of "Pandi" and the bluesy, soundscape dub-soul of "Save Me" - that hit home hardest.

Review: One of the summer's runaway crossover slammers, "I Don't Wanna Hear" saw three fine minds colliding for a grime fusion piece that fits festivals and clubs perfectly... Here we find Toddla and Danny's beats and Jammer's distinctive tones getting the treatment from a perfect range of artists. Mike Skinner kicks off with a skippy riddim and twisted accordion bass flex while Digital Soundboy's latest family member Mella Dee takes us on a very naughty slo-mo amen-heavy jungle vibe. It's Q who really steals the show, though... Adding DRS, AK and C4 to the mix, it's a happy-slapping 4/4 UKG jam of VVVIP proportions. Trust us: you will want to hear this!

Vocalist Jammer joins him to add his wacky North London vibes and Danny Weed beings forth the filth to deliver a seriously abrasive low-ender for the hazy, summer months! Review: Dropping a searing package of badness ahead of the forthcoming Angels & Devils album, The Bug is back in business with some apocalyptic gutter bass of the highest order. "Freakshow" matches the leering delivery of Danny Brown with the sinister croon of King Midas Sound's Kiki Hitomi over a horn-laden trap swagger to devastating effect. "Louder" pits Flowdan in the depths of a nauseating half-step march, while "Dirty" takes the London MC into a barrage of equally nerve-jangling drum rattles and alarm-clanging stabs. Long-time Bug collaborator Daddy Freddy rolls up his sleeves for "Kill Them", anchoring the dread stomp with a fearsome growl as anthemic as it is nihilistic.

Review: Badman flavours are the order of the day as Kentaro shares more smashers from his Contrast album. The Trickaz take on the challenge of "Step In". Fronted by the Foreign Beggars, the original is a hard track to beat. But if anyone can do it, it's these exciting new faces. Snarling with a savage electro flavour, this is next gen dubstep with added hype. "North South East West" finishes the set in two different guises. Tha New Team gets lively with a half-step screamer while Taiki and Nulight subvert proceedings with a sexy deep garage twist. Both are exemplary lessons in the dark art of remixology.

Review: After making a sizable impact sonically (if not quite becoming a household name) with his eponymous debut, Lorn is back at camp Brainfeeder with his own contribution to the sprawling sound of the beat scene. His is a direct, punchy style that owes a fair amount to the weight of dubstep, while reaching out into moods and textures of a more complex nature. This new album continues very much in the tradition of the first, coming on dense and a little paranoid, but the dynamics and detail in the tracks is clearly a step on from Lorn's more stripped back origins.

Review: New out on Ninja Tune, Philadelphia producer Starkey teams up with MC cartel Central Spillz for this feisty new release. Having previously dropped tunes for Planet Mu, Trouble & Bass and Keysound, Starkey is well versed in laying down messed-up bass beats, and on this remixed version of "Open The Pod Bay Doors", he mixes live sounding, grime-structured percussion around multi-octave bass power while the UK rappers simply tear up all mics in sight. A canny, US take on grimey dubstep styles.

Review: FaltyDL arrives on venerable UK imprint Ninja Tune with his most accomplished productions to date in tow. Typically, trying to pigeon-hole this release into a single genre is an exercise in futility, with sounds and textures flittering between disparate samples and tempos with effortless ease. Title track "Atlantis" is a melodic, smudged out roller with a bassline that evokes memories of LCD Soundsystems' "Tribulations" which dovetails snugly with some twangy plucked instrumentation. "Can't Stop The Prophet" is more adventurous still, with crackly atmospherics, toyed-with vocals, sumptuous strings giving off a languid, relaxed air; that is until the frenetic jungle breakdown arrives! Up next is the hip-hop esque swagger of "My Light My Love" and clattering hats and deep house chords of "The Sale Ends". Highly recommended.

Review: Following his "Moonbeam Rider" single for Nina Tune, this new instrumental EP from Greg Feldwick's alias finds the UK producer straddling the gaps between bass music and broken beat/nu-jazz perfectly. The opening title tune is a slow and spacey delight, complete with slowly unfurling arpeggios and some truly unexpected static gaps. "Whirlpool" follows a similarly astral path, while the beatless and cinematic "Dragon Drums" and the Boards of Canada-esque "Mist" are both future classic Ninja Tune cuts.

Review: Alfred Darlington. Quite why you'd pick a pseudonym when you already have a name as incredible as Alfred Darlington at your disposal is a mystery, but then, it's one of many brilliantly odd things about both Daedelus and his ever-evolving music. From indie-tronica, to the deeply warped hip-hop of his "Exquisite Corpse" album, his MF Doom hook-up "Impending Doom" or his 2006 sample-tastic release on Mush, "Denies The Day's Demise", Daedelus has covered a huge amount of ground. Since signing with Ninja however, he's distinctly upped the tempo and applied his scattered, bricolage techniques to making electronic/dance music in his own idiosyncratic way. As a prelude to new album Bespoke, this first single features Canadian electronica producer (and former Plug Research labelmate) Milosh on the vocals and positively charges out of your speakers at a galloping 130bpm tempo. With a thick kick and a juke-like clap keeping time, a wave of samples gets slowly filtered up, much like the start of "Make It So", but even more bug-eyed and delirious. Short loops of urgent strings samples nestle up against tight bass hits, barber shop quartet backing harmonies, even guitar chanks that sound eerily like they've been sampled from Arabesque's "In The Heat Of A Disco Night". Milosh's languid vocals fit like a glove over this sea of soaring noise, as he takes time over each line and allows the melodies to float over the top of it all like a saxophone player playing a deliberately restrained solo. The whole thing reminds hugely of Radiohead's "Idioteque" but constructed with warm organic sounds rather than icy electronic ones. A Floating Points remix of "Tailor Made" is lined up for the future, which will no doubt be pretty special, and on the strength of this first single, Bespoke looks like being an essential purchase too.
