No Art serves not only as an anagram for label owner ANOTR, but also as an outlet for the Amsterdam based producer/DJ/promoter’s own sounds - plus those of like minded artists. In only a mere few years, the label has amassed an impressive discography with releases from mainstay Toman, scene veteran Sante and newcomers like Rossi. and II Faces. Key releases such as Armand Van Helden VS ANOTR’s “Funk Phenomena”, Sidney Charles’ Keep On EP as well as the recent Lipid EP by MADVILLA & Mihai Popoviciu have cemented its position as one of the most exciting tech house labels right now.
Review: Fresh from delivering a dash of extra-percussive and deliciously bouncy Afro-house on Club Bad (August 2023's 'Despacio'), former Hot Creations and Defected contributor Bontan pops up on No Art. The killer cut is undoubtedly opener 'Get Down', which sees him stretch out a bouncy Afro-house beat before adding echoing spoken word vocals, deep bass, occasional electronic motifs and tons of attractive additional percussion. Bontan continues his love of slowly building up grooves on the more tech-tinged (but no less Afro-house flavoured) 'Purple Rose, once again adding hand percussion hits, weird noises and cut-up vocal snippets to a sturdy, non-stop groove.
Review: Dutch label No Art invites the immensely talented Jasper James to the forefront. Hailing from Scotland, James has swiftly risen to prominence within the scene, captivating listeners worldwide with his distinctive DJing prowess and cutting-edge productions. His latest release is a testament to his musical finesse, offering three remarkable percussive house tracks. The title track "Keepon" mesmerises with its crisp drums, alluring vocal loops and intricate melodies. With "Rise," James masterfully blends slinking grooves, playful samples and hypnotic synths, ensuring an infectious groove. Concluding the EP is "What You Say," a stripped-back anthem featuring rolling drums and organic beats, destined to ignite the summer season with its undeniable energy.
Review: Seven months after dropping their debut album, Expo Series 1, ANOTR returns with another full-length excursion, this one featuring a mixture of solo tracks and collaborations. The Amsterdam-based twosome is in fine form throughout, joyfully dancing between shuffling, piano-heavy blends of breakbeat-driven deep house-disco ('Make Art Not EUR'), punk-funk splashed jazz-funk/house fusion ('Your Mind' with Abel Balder), grown-up disco-house hedonism (the Rhodes-heavy summer blast of 'Bigger Picture'), sun-soaked, jazz guitar-laden dancefloor gorgeousness ('Canvas'), Escort style neo-disco ('Mirror Society'), jazzy organic house ('Time To Smoke' with Sebastien Kamae) and sparkling, synth-laden nu-disco (King Wonder Bread hook-up 'The Great Reset').
Review: Amsterdam based duo ANOTR is comprised of Jesse Van Heijden and Oguzhan Guney, who have been making huge waves internationally. Here they present the first installment in the Expo Series for local scene heroes No Art, featuring eight killer cuts. From the pumping '90s house energy of "Atomic Air", the dubby swing-fuelled stomp of "Token", to the rolling tribal tech house of "Black Box" which is totally geared for summertime vibes on The White Isle, and the mesmerising tech house of "O.P.O.P." - the rising Dutch duo are at the top of their game on this one.
Review: Back once again on the NO ART label are the sounds of Toman, an artist that since 2016 has been making a groovy, minimal and stripped back name for himself thanks to drops on EastEnderz, We_r House and his own Toman Music. With tracks like "Am I Conscious" delivering deep Berlin vibes with that trippy Claude Von Stroke vocal tip, get your trippier and dubbed out tracks from "Contigo". Shake your booty to some tribal New Yorkian touches in "Sabelo" and the stripped back "Everywhere I Go I'm Haunted By Jazz" with it's classical, hip hop sampling tip, with "Automatic" going deep and rhodesy in some Ibiza channelling class. Tech spirit, house vibes!
Review: Smooth '90s house sounds coming out of Toman's Otro Mundo EP from ANOTR's No Art label goes as far to employ Archie Hamilton for a remix of "Patience - a deep and easy vibe given a slight pop and trance touch from Archie. "Otro Mundo'' holds down a minimal groove and panning side effects that saddle up with the track's country western/desert vibe alongside a techier set of sounds in "Sometimes Is Not Forever (original mix)" that's spun out by a doppler effect of voice, vocals and lighter synths. Mundo exotico! Enjoy.
Review: A rising name within the UK tech house scene, Sheffield's James Saunders is one to watch in 2020 and beyond. Having caught the attention of No Art head honchos ANOTR, he now makes his debut on the imprint with the 'Ten Hours' EP. The title track is a bumpy and swing-fuelled jam that will mix well with your Ben Rau or Jack Wickham tracks, while the remix by the label heads is druggier and rolls deeper for the after hours, yet still keeping those infectious steel drum sounds intact. Additional tracks come in the form of the minimal groove tool "Keyless" followed by the infectious funk of "Pressure Cooker".
