Review: Although he's been releasing music since the mid noughties, Roy McLaren has yet to break through into house music's higher tiers - despite outings on a wide variety of labels including Nocturnal Groove, Reflective Music, Hot Q and Hear To Hear Music. Maybe this fine single on Matt Prehn's So Coy Recordings imprint will provide the momentum he needs. In its' original form, 'When You're Near' is an attractive, glassy-eyed slab of chunky, bass-heavy deep house - all swirling female vocal samples, classic keyboard stabs, bouncy electronic riffs and rolling beats - that should appeal to both deep and soulful house heads. Newcomer Deephope opts for a slower, dubby and even deeper vibe on his fantastic rework, before Prehn rounds off a rock-solid EP via a dreamy, locked-in 'Late Dub' revision.
