Review: With the pandemic forcing the Berlin clubbing institution Berghain to close temporarily, the collaborative nature of Funfzehn + 1 provided the Ostgut Ton artist roster to cope with themes of isolation and conjure up 'memories of music and space that had been inaccessible'. Originally slated for release in 2020, the compilation finally sees the light of day with the selected contributors working together in pairs to make music dedicated to the former power plant's five different floors. Club residents such as Ben Klock and Etapp Kyle appear with the deep sonar transmissions of "A Friend Of A Friend" and Marcel Dettmann & Norman Nodge team up on the muscular body music of "The Call", while Panorama Bar regulars Tama Sumo and Lakuti offer up the low slung disco vibe of "An Ode To Audre" and Avalon Emerson and Roi Perez impress with the snaking polyrhythms of "Champu Princess".

Review: It's no surprise that the world's most feted techno club has decided to celebrate its fifteenth anniversary with something special - a release that seeks to redefine the art of the DJ mix. In fact, Luke Slater has christened his approach on Berghain Funfzehn 'ripping the cut': it saw the storied UK techno artist scour all of sister label Ostgut Ton's Eps and LPs for source material in order to fashion 26 new tracks and then to mix them all together. The end result is a wild ride through the very best in contemporary club techno, with elements from well-known Ostgut releases from Ben Klock, Levon Vincent and Marcel Dettmann featuring alongside lesser-known gems from Lerosa and Rolando.

Unseen - (4:53) 71 BPM Hot
Polar - (6:28) 69 BPM
Eden - (4:24) 87 BPM
Review: With Berlin's clubbing HQ currently off limits it's pleasing to know Berghain's in-house label is still pumping. Nolove adds to the label's formidable run of EPs from Shed, Substance and Tobias, to albums from Efedemin, Barker and Planetary Assault Systems. Joining this hot streak is long associated DJ and artist with Ostgut, Etapp Kyle, and he realises his second release for the label following previous releases for underton, and Klockworks before that. For this four-track the artist goes spacey and percussive, with skittering white noise flickers and effects chosen over classic techno hi-hats and snares etc. "Polar" and "Unseen" present two cooler, cosmic freezes of subby, percussive drums and mellow overtones while "No Love" and "Eden" venture into more sparse, melodic and experimental territory. Hold on to love.

Electric Storm - (6:32) 134 BPM
Review: Tobias Freund's catalogue is characterised by an intricate, layered production approach, and it's no surprise that he brings this aesthetic to bear on1972. The title track cracks and fizzles with raw percussive bursts as the veteran producer weaves an intricate web of haunting electronics. On "Schism", the rhythm is less direct and the sound deeper, but the same mindset applies, with Tobias multi-layering melodic elements to create a hypnotic effect. "The Wisdom Of No Escape", with its tripped out vocal sample, adds an extra dimension to his sonic armoury, while on "Electric Storm", Tobias diverts somewhat from the script to deliver an abstract, stripped back track.

Review: Phase Fatale aka Hayden Payne follows his 2017 debut album Redeemer with this unforgettable follow up. The Berlin-based producer has spoken about how Scanning Backwards is inspired by his residency at Berghain, and it's impossible to play down this influence. "Velvet Imprints" is a lean but menacing club track, inspired by ebm and designed for blacked out rooms. Payne moves close to conventional song arranging on "Binding By Oath" - but waves of electronic intensity blast away any pop pretence - while at the album's midpoint "During The Freezing Process" sees him deliver a less intense take on his signature. These exceptions should not lure the listener into a false sense of security and as the head-shredding, visceral stomp of "Mass Deception" demonstrates, Phase Fatale is a master of neo-industrial techno.

Review: Oderbruch is Rene Pawlowitz's fifth artist album as Shed, and the title refers to the place in east Germany he comes from. It's no surprise then that this long player is a deeply personal affair. "Die Oder", named after the river in that region, flows serenely thanks to a slip-slide rhythm and gentle pads. "Menschen & Mauern" is the polar opposite, with Pawlowitz dropping high-speed break beats and evocative organ playing. A similarly introspective mood plays out on the dusky sound scapes of "Sterbende Alleen", where Pawlowitz's sense of disillusionment is palpable. However, like any personalised work, the mood swings, with the dreamy "Nacht, Fluss, Grille, Auto, Frosch, Eule, Mucke" restoring a sense of calm with its bucolic tones.

Review: Plantae is Luke Slater's seventh artist album as Planetary Assault Systems and his fourth for Ostgut. If you're looking for forward-looking club techno, you've come to the right place. The album opens with the indistinct tones of "Red", before "Whip it Good" takes up the mantle and sees Slater deliver a tougher take on this sound, powered by hissing percussion and tough kicks. Meanwhile "Kamani" is a deeper, more understated take on this style. "Spell A" is a more stripped back affair, resounding to tight percussion and a rolling groove, while "Mugwort" calls to mind Slater's 90s work under this guise, with a hypnotic rhythm underscoring a cacophony of atmospheric sounds.

Love Lost - (6:21) 110 BPM
Start Trying - (6:16) 124 BPM
Review: Collaborating across continents, Gonno and Panorama Bar's Nick Hoppner deliver their second EP for Ostgut. It's an esoteric affair, with "Bangalore" opening the release in deep, atmospheric mode. Unravelling to the sound of ominous bass, layered textures and percussive bursts, it's an expansive, hypnotic serving of modern techno. "Love Lost" is quite a different proposition; it sees the pair drop a slinky rhythm track that provides the basis for sweet, acid-soaked melodies and dubbed out vocal samples. "Start Trying" is different again: they pick up the pace to deliver a warbling Detroit style groove, populated by cool bleeps and shiny synths.

Review: Work is Steffi's first release on Ostgut in a few years, and it sees her hook up with long-standing collaborator Virginia. "Be True to Me" is a typical Steffi track: understated blips and lush synths unfold over a bubbling groove, with Virginia's soulful tones at the heart of the arrangement. However, the approach changes on "Sight From Above", where smoky beats support the vocal narrative. "Help Me Understand" and "Until You're Begging" both see Steffi reach back to the angular electro that her label Klakson became known for, albeit with vocals added. Meanwhile, the title track sees the pair head off into deeper waters, with a rumbling bass accompanying bruising drums and Virginia's soulful tones.

Review: On his debut solo LP for Ostgut Ton, Leisure System co-founder Sam Barker turns his focus toward the psychology behind the musical decision making process, with solutions for 'quantifying pleasure, abolishing suffering, and the ethical use of drugs and nanotechnology' - being just some of the themes over its nine tracks, with a strong aesthetic of dub techno throughout. From thought provoking IDM cuts like "Posmean" or the particularly cavernous "Gradients Of Bliss", right through to moments of emotive techno-soul as heard on the title track and the transcendental ambience of "Wireheading" - 'Utility' is a non-ironic musical approach to a whole spectrum of utilitarian and transhumanist ideas.

Review: Well well well, we seem to have been delivered treat as the legendary Martyn returns with new music via Ostgut Ton Germany. The EP itself is made up of three original heaters, kicking off with the super choppy drum swipes and gnarly bass twists of the title track 'Odds Against Us'. This is then followed in style by the super unique sounding minimal drums tones of 'BC 2', stooped in dungeon-esc energy. The EP is then finished up in style as we take a dive into the swirling synth pools and smooth chord progressions of 'Rhythm Ritual', a classy way to round off a fantastic new body of work.

Review: Detroit native Ryan Elliott became one of Berghain/Panorama Bar's first international residents back in 2010 and has likewise made forays into production sporadically since then for in-house imprint Ostgut Ton. Following up his 2011 debut Rocksteady EP and 2013's Stepmode release, he's back in fine form with a couple of stylish bangers on his new Paul's Horizon EP. The title track's fierce functionality will no doubt suit the powerful sound system at his famed residency's main hall, equally so is the churning dub techno cyclicality of "Grafton Road" while the the rolling groove of "Martinville Morning" is seductive in equally both ethereal and emotive proportions.

Review: American industrial scene stalwart Dominick Fernow makes a somewhat surprising addition to Berlin institution Berghain's mix series on its ninth instalment. Under the Vatican Shadow moniker, he has increasingly flirted with techno, performing regularly at the Berlin institution as a DJ and with his intense live show. Of the mix, Fernow - who is otherwise known for work under many other aliases such as Prurient, Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement or Exploring Jezebel among others - has stated that his interest in DJing developed out of industrial music traditions such as mail art, tape trading, and sound collage. This sonic 'cut up' of electronic edits bridges the gap between several generations of electronic music subculture, taking in early UK industrial (Genesis Breyer P-Orridge), Japanese noise (Merzbow) and the very NYC underground that he came up in with contemporaries such as Virile Games and Kris Lapke (aka Alberich) also featured.

Review: New Atlantis is Efdemin's fourth artist album and takes its title from Francis Bacon's unfinished novel. In that work, there were musical instruments that could read all of the sounds of the universe. However, to start this album, the storied producer decides instead to go with the sound of the human voice on "Oh, Lovely Appearance Of Death". In spite of this bold move, he is soon back in his back in his comfort zone on the drum-heavy groove of "Good Winds" and the title track, where a sub-aquatic acid line is fused with woodwind sounds and dubbed out groove. While not as revelatory as his debut album, Efdemin, there are still wonderful touches here, such as the swirling sound scapes of "At The Stranger's House".

Review: It's hard to believe that over two decades have passed since DJ Pete's Substance project released new material. The project's releases on Chain Reaction, along with the output of sister label Basic Channel, were one of the touch points for techno music. The question now is whether Pete will follow the same path? Based on the title track, it seems that he is now more inspired by the sound track of his Wax Treatment residency, as dub shanty melodies shimmer and flicker over spiky drums. If this seems ephemeral in comparison to the cavernous depth of his Chain Reaction work, then consider the robust broken beats of "Countdown" or "Cruising", a linear groove, underpinned by grainy drums and the grey scale hum of early Berlin mornings.

Since then, techno has undergone seismic change, but as Embodiment demonstrates, the same ground rules still apply. As a veteran DJ, Nodge is ideally placed to articulate a variety of sounds and styles, which he does effortlessly here. There's the dubby, chord-heavy "Tacit Knowing", while on "Discipline", he caters for the main room with a rolling, filtered workout of epic proportions. "Gathering" is more subtle but just as effective thanks to its rolling bongos, while rounding off this seven-year comeback is the evocative, chord-heavy title track, which just keeps on building.

Review: Fixmer follows Depth Charged, his 2015 album on CLR, with this new long player for Ostgut. While he has long been one of the leading producers of EBM-influenced techno, Cortex sees him navigate a path through more grungy, industrial sounds. There's the droning, stepping rhythms of "Shout In A Black Hole" and "Event Horizon", the latter led by eerie sound scapes, while "Fury", which is aptly named, sounds like a brutal, wired take on Jeff Mills. The ghostly swagger and paranoid vocals of "Accelerate" see Fixmer return to his EBM sound and "Expedition" see the French producer deliver a slower, more teased out take on this sound, but Cortex is a diverse affair that also includes the spooky ambience of "A Halo Somewhere" and "Something Invisible".

Review: Test-File is Marcel Dettmann's first solo record in over five years. Despite the passage of time, it sees him focus again on straddling experimental sounds and more dance-floor friendly arrangements. This is especially the case on the title track, where the Berghain resident blends stepping, rickety rhythms with ghostly soundscapes. On "Ascending", he focuses on a straighter, tribal rhythm, while Dettmann's exploration of the dance floor also sees him unleash the stripped back, oddball house of "Autumn77". However, experimentation is never too far from his agenda, and the water-drop abstractions and eerie, bass groans of "Torch" provide a reminder as to why he is so revered - on and away from the dance floor.

Review: After a release on sub-label Unterton last year, Phase Fatale aka Hayden Payne now makes his debut on the mother imprint. Taking inspiration from industrial's dance floor and experimental strains in equal measures, the common bond across Reverse Fall is Payne's adherence to dark electronic sounds. This takes form on the pounding, Front 242-style title track and "Blackbox", where a tunnel of glitchy percussion paves the way for a peak time, pounding rhythm. In contrast, on "Empty Whip" percussive bursts simulate whip lashes doled out over a buckled, broken electro track, while on "Incision" brooding sub bass and murky textures collide to bring this bleak but compelling release to a finale.

Review: For his latest album, Martyn has turned a real-life, near-death experience into one of his greatest artistic statements. Recorded after he was recovering from a heart attack, it sees the storied Dutch producer at his most vulnerable. Granted, there are typical Martyn steppers like the melancholic "Manchester" and the recoiling sub-bass of "Nya", but the album also contains abstract, contemplative pieces like "Voids One", the jazzed-out drums of "Why" and the show-stopping, late night piano piece, "Try To Love You". Clearly, his experience has left him with an appreciation for music in its rawest form and thankfully, he is happy to share it with his audience.

Review: While it may not seem as familiar as other artists, Sam Barker's relationship with the Berghain / Ostgut axis is long-established. Working together with Andy Baumecker, he has released a series of albums and Eps for the label, while his own imprint, Leisure System, has hosted nights at the hallowed Berlin club. Now flying solo with Debiasing, he reveals a more contemplative edge to his sound. "Cascade Effect" and "Look How Hard I've Tried" are led by atmospheric chords and gentle bass tones, while on "When Prophesy Fails", he offers up a similar, albeit slightly more frosty melodic sequence. Clearly there is a lot more going on to Barker than dance floor techno, and even the warbling rhythm of "Filter Bubbles" is complex, intricate - but always intriguing,

Review: After a series of releases on Marcel Fengler's label and Unterton, rising techno producer Somewhen makes it onto the main Ostgut label. Part of Berlin's new school of artists, AFL doesn't focus exclusively on one style. Instead, Somewhen varies the release by moving from the storming dark techno of "Ryte" - replete with doomy vocals - to the murky downtempo "Undress", which unravels to the sound of eerie strings and more mysterious voices., Shifting gear again, the title track is a noisy, broken beat workout, while on "Kilo",

a straighter approach prevails. Revolving around a pulsing groove, its acidic undercurrents are sure to have the right impact on the main floors of the German capital's clu

Review: While Berlin's Answer Code Request certainly comes from a techno mentality, the producer has shifted his focus to what Shed, and the rest of his compatriots, have eventually gravitated towards. This new LP for the capital's Ostgut Ton label, is more bass than tech, and we think that this is extremely well-suited to the man's loose, freeform take on German dance music. In fact, this is more UK than anything, with the majority of these tunes breaking the all-too-predictable 4/4 trance for something much more in line with the likes of Hessle Audio or Night Slugs. However, this is very much an Answer Code Request flex, with what undertones of German industrialism seeping their way through the percussion and structure of the grooves. What a corker - recommended!

Review: Fiedel is the latest Berghain resident DJ to contribute to its mix series and this sampler release captures the machine-driven energy of his varied sets. Electric Indigo's contribution, "Registers", is a cavernous, steely arrangement designed for maximum impact in the Berlin club's high-ceilinged main room, while Stefan Rein's "Panther" is more of a heads-down banger, charged to provide a boost to tired dancers. Fiedel makes a diversion with the off centre broken beats and odd but inspired combination of industrial drums and animal sounds on rRoxymore's "Tropicalcore", while Fiedel himself gets down and dirty with fellow resident Boris for the bleep-heavy, tone-shifting "Div'hain".

Review: This debut single from previously unseen outfit LSD is remarkable for a number of reasons, not least the fact that the trio is made up of legendary UK techno producers Luke Slater, Steve Bicknell and Dave Summer AKA Function. Given their collective history of making thumping, mind-altering techno, you'd expect Progress to be both heavy and trippy. That's certainly what you get from opener "Process 1", where psychedelic electronics and cascading, otherworldly noises rise above an armour-plated techno groove. They push the envelope even further on "Process 2", a track blessed with restless cymbal lines and weird, off-key electronics. In comparison, the similarly intense "Process 3" seems deep and woozy, though the incessant, 1990 style bleeps and "LFO" style synths guarantees a suitably hallucinogenic feel throughout.

Review: Following on from her impressive third album, Steffi delivers a killer deep techno EP. The sound and mood on this two-tracker are similar to the tone that prevailed on World Of The Waking State. Inspired by classic UK and US techno from the 90s, "Exit the Ego" is a high-paced groove that resounds to insistent chord stabs, an upfront bass and even some vaguely menacing sirens. On "The Big White Bang", the Panorama Bar resident opts for a more introspective approach. While the groove is rickety and off-beat and the acid lends some sense of urgency, the overall mood is that of introspection - a common theme in what is Steffi's most rewarding artistic phase yet.

Review: By Steffi's own admission, State was recorded after she had 'freed' herself from a personal situation. This explains why the Dutch producer, who now feels more comfortable creatively, has made a third album that is more experimental than its predecessors. In places, it sounds influenced heavily by early 90s UK techno and electronics - in particular "All Living Things" is a dead-ringer for B12's Detroit-focused abstractions. At the same time, it still contains echoes of her previous albums. The warm, warbling bass on "Schools of Thought" could easily fit into the Panorama Bar's deep house releases. Counteracting this link to her past is the hyper-speed title track, where she channels Stingray's pacey electro funk, and the jittery, discordant techno of "Mental Events". It all adds up to an impressive, mature work.

Review: Over the space of just a few releases, Etapp Kyle has established himself as one of techno's most promising new artists. Of course, it helped him significantly that those initial Eps came out on labels like Klockworks, Prologue, Unterton and now Ostgut, the mother label associated with Berlin club Berghain, where he has a residency. As Alpha shows, Kyle's approach to techno is of the non-purist variety. On the title track, the sparse rhythmic pulses of Klockworks collide with Detroit otherworldliness for an expansive track. "Quantum" is more direct and sees the Ukrainian artist use his loose sounding drums and percussion to undercut a darker approach, while clouds of filtered sound and eerie textures crash in over the doubled up drums of "Source". "Ritual" sees him complete the release with a hint of bass-heavy menace, not entirely dissimilar to Prologue's sound.

Review: Fixmer is fresh from remixing Depeche Mode, but don't expect to hear any synth pop influences here. In reality, the opposite is true. Force sees him deliver one of his most bruising releases to date. The title track kick-starts the release with noisy riffs and brutal kicks, as oppressive as the mid-day heat in Death Valley. "Melting Planets" sees he French producer embrace surging chords, and is not quite as foreboding, but it's only a temporary reprieve. Fixmer brings back a dark mood with the stripped back "Sidewalk", which resounds to jittery, minimalist beats, while on "Striking Patterns" an understated sense of menace rumbles on.

Review: Despite his young age, Kobosil has already got a series of well-regarded releases to his credit, including a debut album on Ostgut. 105, his latest release for the label, will only serve to consolidate this reputation. "OOL" resounds to a pounding rhythm and rough, frazzled kicks, exactly the kind of track that is tailor made for Berghain's main floor. "Bei Nacht (178)" is of a similar disposition and revolves around a rolling, percussive groove and tough drums, while the aptly-named "Derange" sees the young German artist deliver a pacey, percussive workout. The most impressive track is "Backmask N"; a tough, pacey percussive roller, it hinges on the kind of sub-bass menace that Suburban Knight used to specialise in.

Review: Work is Nick Hoppner's second album for the iconic label that he manages, but despite this reversal of roles, it shows his considerable talent and versatility when it comes to making music. "All By Themselves (My Belle)" is a dreamy pop track, while on "Clean Living" he adeptly mixes deep house synths and floaty melodies with a churning Chicago bass. "In My Mind" is a stripped back affair that breaks into soaring melodies, while on "Hole Head', he veers into broken beats and jazzy chords. "The Dark Segment" continues Hoppner's voyage into the abstract, featuring broken beats and eerie sound scapes, while he heads back to the dance floor with the flamboyant Latino chords and pared back rhythm of "Forced Resonance". It's an assured second album from one of Ostgut's secret weapons.

Review: Despite featuring what appears to be a refugee camp viewed from the other side of a fence on its cover, Vatican Shadow's "They Deserve Death" is one of its author Dominc Fernow's most mellow, introspective moments. Its layered guitar textures recall The Durutti Column's eponymous album and early New Order. Shifting the tempo and style for the title track, the author surprises again with what sounds like his approximation of jacking Chicago house, albeit with a man groaning away in the background. Completing what is one of Fernow's most unpredictable releases is the tunneling techno groove and layered, distant shrieks of "Weapons Inspection".

Review: Center is Tobias Freund's third studio album for Ostgut and its title provides a good indication of where its author is at. It veers in style from the dense electro of "Cr 24" to the experimental abstractions of "Autopoiesis" and "Single Minded" and ominous dark ambient compositions like "In Between". There is more dance floor friendly techno tracks such as "Blind Mass", but it is not like Freund makes conventional music and both "Mass" and "Syndrome" resound to stepping rhythms, layered textures and insistent percussion. This has a lot to do with Freund's background as a studio engineer and his perfectionist approach, and it feels like every note, tone and frequency on Center has been carefully, expertly calculated.

Review: It's a case of gamekeeper turned poacher as Ostgut boss Nick Hoppner appears again on the label, following his 2015 debut album, Folk. This three-tracker is like a distillation of his time spent in the Panorama Bar booth. The title track is a hypnotic, techy groove, covered in warm, hazy chords and redolent of classic David Alvarado's Sun Children material. On "Still", Hoppner keeps it deep, but injects some trippy acid undercurrents. The closing track, "Out of Sight", is the most dance floor friendly, with Hoppner opting for a lithe, swinging rhythm as a backing for his warm, sun-kissed chords and melodies.

Review: Despite being associated with the Berghain-Ostgut operation for years and releasing the occasional track for the label, Substance B is Fiedel's first full EP for the German imprint. It's a dark, heavy affair, but not without the funk and sense of groove that is audible in all of his solo work and his MMM collaborations. "Substance B" itself sees him drop tough kicks and acidic licks, backed by a disco-y groove, while on "Track 432", he veers into a 303-heavy direction, accompanied by eerie synths but also a rolling rhythm. Only "S Drive" lacks Fiedel's usual playful approach - and sees him deliver the kind of quasi-industrial prowler that will hit the spot in Berghain's darkest corners.

Review: With releases on Live At Robert Johnson - including two albums - Balihu and Uncanny Valley, Pagliara might seem like an unusual choice of artist to put out music on Ostgut. That said, the Italian producer has had a long association with Berghain and was even a regular at its first incarnation. In any case, "If I Try to Forget I Will Miss You Even More" sees him ride a pulsing electronic disco groove, while on "Time And Again" he provides a rougher version of that sound as a pulsing bass and raw drums crash and pound away. "To A Faraway Place", with its insistent chord builds, is the kind of track that Steffi might play in the Panorama Bar, but it's only a fleeting nod at the club's chosen soundtrack and Pagliara quickly swings back towards the left of centre - this time with the acidic downtempo epic, "A Passing Day".

It's their first combined release since 2013. Every one of the 7 tracks are full of high quality, atmospheric, late night techno workouts, from the creepy riffs and off-kilter drums of "Phantom Studies", and the horror-influenced post-dubstep shuffle of "The Room", to the raging, mind-altering dancefloor heaviness of "Bay Boy" and sparse, minimalist techno closer "The Tenant". Review: Turns is the second album from Sam Barker and Berghain resident Andy 'Nd' Baumecker and shows that the pair have evolved and matured. "Encipher & Decipher" is rooted on the dance floor, but flows to the sound of ghostly synths and spellbinding bleeps. The pair also deploy this musical approach in slower settings audible on the reflective opener "Senden", while "Nocturnal" is an uptempo but chord-heavy groover similar to Aril Brikha. Some references to an electronic, experimental sound linger though; this is audible on the glitchy beats of "Club Entropicana" and the bass-heavy "Turnhalle", but overall, Turns is a musical, melodic affair.

Review: Any new material from Luke Slater under the Planetary Assault Systems alias is something to celebrate, but rarely has the techno veteran dropped such an expansive set as Arc Angel. Boasting a positively overwhelming 20 tracks over three weighty slabs of vinyl, the first PAS album for five years is as spacey, hypnotic and intoxicating as anything in the British techno legend's vast catalogue. While mostly focused on atmospheric, Motor City influenced dancefloor futurism - and, let's face it, few do that better than Slater - Arc Angel also boasts a handful of inspired ambient cuts, some vintage, UK style "intelligent techno", and occasional nods towards UK contemporaries such as Surgeon, James Ruskin, Mark Broom and Oliver Ho.

In this instance, Styles' first EP for Ostgut following an appearance on one of the Panorama Bar samplers, there's a rough and bleary feel to each composition. This sensibility manifests itself in different ways; the title track is a stepping, broken beat affair laced with acid, while the contemplative "Wave 6" sounds like it was created by the Mike Huckaby-loved synth. The only out and out dance floor track, "Border", is also notable thanks to its shimmering, sleek chords and rolling house beats.

"Nucleon" picks up the pace somewhat with its jittery, clicky rhythm and bleary bass tones, like a black hawk helicopter landing in slow motion. By the time he gets to "Helios", the atmosphere has become frostier as razor blade percussion provides the backdrop for a world of icy textures and snow-capped soundscapes. Closing track "Spectrum V" raises the prospect of the dance floor, but only if disconnected stepping rhythms and muffled robot vocals are your thing.

Review: Panorama Bar resident and Ostgut Ton mainstay Virginia is back with a full length. Whether she's lending her fine vocal talents to homegirl Steffi (who co-produced the album with fellow Dutch legends Dexter and Martyn) like she did on her Power of Anonymity album a couple of years ago on the fabulous "Yours", or getting behind the console herself to pump some sweet grooves; she sure is versatile. Fierce For The Night is a fitting title, the dozen or so tracks on here are the perfect soundtrack to a long night and morning experiencing her acclaimed residency and all inspired by the classic and timeless sounds of Chicago and NYC. Highlights include the sultry dancefloor drama of the mighty opener "Bally Linny", the Chaka Chan inspired boogie playground that is "Obstacle", the emotional and bittersweet slow-mo pop of "Believe In Time" or the high octane dancefloor bomb that is "Raverd"

Review: 15 months on from her previous Ostgut Ton appearance - the collaborative Treasure Seeking EP with pals Steffi and Dexter, Virgina Hogl returns with a brand new EP ahead of a debut LP on the Berlin stronghold. Happily she's in fine form, as the glassy-eyed, synth propelled, deep house retro-futurism of "Funkert" proves. The extended original is joined by a tasty Dub, which bobs and weaves in all the right places, while adding a little bump to the drums. As its' title suggests, "Raverd" aims for late night dancefloor domination via sustained notes, bubbly rave riffs and more confident vocalizing from Hogl. It, too, is accompanied by a vocal-less dub, on which Virginia wisely emphasizes the spine-tingling riffs and loved-up chords.

Review: All good things come to an end. Part ten of ten in Ostgut Ton's tenth various artists' compilation and they've recruited some of their superstar residents to give their very best. Marcel Fengler's restrained fury on "Fallin' (feat. Elif Bicer)" almost sounds like something off the soundtrack of a sci-fi film where dramatic elements face off with Bicer's angelic voice. Etapp Kyle's "Nolah" is another example of his well executed hypnotic techno with a nod to the master himself Robert Hood. Finally Steffi's "Loweborschtel" is the kind of surefire sub-aquatic electro funk and the standard in quality you'd always expect from the Dolly boss.

Star resident Ben Klock has taken quite a long hiatus from production but he's still got it, as shown on the tunnelling and cyclical cut "Sirens". Fellow resident and Detroit ex-pat Ryan Elliott serves up the soulful and emotive "Smith Lake" which is brilliant and reminds us of Exos or "Dead Eye" era Baby Ford. Finally resident party animal Len Faki surprises many with the ambient mix of his undisputed anthem "Rainbow Delta" and it is absolutely sublime; you can just drift away to this one, you'll see!

Review: If the Acht release accommodates Panorama Bar's house sensibilities, then Sieben is sure to be played out on Berghain's main floor. That said, the seventh release in Ostgut's 10-strong series starts with Martyn in reflective mood. With its loose, tribal drums, ponderous vocal and dubby chords, "Jah Bedouin" could be the Dutch producer's own version of Bandulu's distinctive techno. Tobias and Atoma soon pick up the pace though, and their "Physik E7532" fuses steely claps and clanging rhythms with grimy acid lines. Luke Slater ramps up the intensity levels further with Planetary Assault System's "Hama Static", a bleep-heavy banger that will drill its way into your cranium.

Review: The eighth installment in Ostgut's ten-vinyl strong release series is sure to be a desirable item not just for fans of the Berlin label. All of the tracks on Acht take the listener down a disco-fied route. First up is Berghain resident Marcel Fengler and Efdemin as DIN; the pair's "Mono" is a crackling, pulsating groove that hints at industrial and noise influences. Fiedel's "Probe 806" goes farther in this direction with an electronic rhythm underscoring detuned rave sirens. Finally, there's Tobias' "Like A Drug". Its cut-up vocal sample and tracky backing, coupled with some buzzing acid, is tailor made for the shutter-opening ritual that is central to the Panorama Bar experience.

Review: German producer Kobosil is only in his 20s, but with a residency at Berghain and releases on its in-house label and Marcel Dettmann's MDR, he has already achieved more than most young artists. Grow, his debut album, is his most ambitious move so far. With the exception of the industrial-charged "Aim For Target" and the tough house of "The Living Ritual", his main focus is on dark, eerie ambient shapes - check the title track - and the spooky drones of "Telling The Truth" and "To See Land". It's far removed from more typical Kobosil fare like the hypnotic, linear "You Answered With Love", but Grow is an assured, adventurous move from Berghain techno's boy wonder.

Review: It's strange to think that the title of Kobosil's latest release is a reference to his birth year, the same year that Berlin institution Hardwax first opened its doors. Despite being in his mid-20s, this protege of Berghain shows that he is very skilful at creating tough but distinctive techno. "Konvergent" is all pumping, rolling bass and doubled up claps, while "Per" sees him push in a similar direction - on this occasion however, he lets spiky percussive volleys accompany his grimy pulses. There is a men-acing, moody air throughout this record, but it never feels affected or put on, nor does Kobosil rely on cheap tricks to achieve this effect. It means that the dark ambience of "Athtar" is just as spine-chillingly evocative as the howling wind and powerful bass of techno.

Review: You have to admire Ostgut Ton's ambition. While celebrating a decade in dance music with a compilation of exclusive, previously unheard music is now standard practice amongst leading underground labels, few would have the balls to release it with such a killer tracklisting as Zehn. Across the 30 tracks (count 'em!) you get a who's who of Berghain and Panorama Bar associates delivering a quite outstanding selection of left-of-centre techno and deep European house, with Marcel Dettmann, Boris, Virginia, Steffi, DVS1, Martyn, Tobias and Ben Klock all featuring. Highlights naturally come thick and fast, from the spacey electronics, heady textures and hypnotic rhythms of Function's "DX3 Analog Bass Seq", and the rush-inducing, string-laden house warmth of Matthew Styles' remix of Dinky's "Planes", to the picturesque intelligent techno of Doms & Deykers.

Review: It sounds strange to say it, but this is the happiest release that Berghain's in-house label has put out. The title track is full of mournful keys and a pulsing Chicago bass and the groove is positively jaunty. It's hard to imagine how Martyn got to this place, but equally, there is no doubt that this sweet mood suits him. "U1-U8" is more in keeping with the Dutch producer's sound, with haunting chords unfolding over furious break beats, but soon enough, he's back exploring a more contemplative sound and the loose drums and melancholic keyboard solos sound like a freeform version of Smallville/Dial's deep, reflective house.

Review: Don't you just hate it when remix EPs come filled with dull, similar-sounding reworks? Happily, Ostgut Ton is above all of that. Their choice of producers to remix cuts from Nick Hoppner's recent album, Folk, was inspired, and the results are uniformly superb. There's a brilliantly analogue-sounding rework of "Relate" by Chicago's The Black Madonna that doffs a cap to Jeff Mills, acid house and early British rave, and a trippy, dub techno-influenced, Berghain-friendly take on "Come Closer" by Lilt. On the flip, Dutch veteran Aardvarck makes "Grind Slow" sound like a mixture of instrumental industrial pop and hypnotic techno, before Herva steals the show with a rather brilliant, ambient-meets-experimental dub revision of "Rising Overheads". The latter may not be dancefloor dynamite, but it's really rather good.

Review: Dolly label boss and Panorama Bar resident Steffi returns with another single from her well received album "Power Of Anonymity". "JBW25" is a killer cut with its razor sharp synth melody and spooky pads accompanying a thumping, tightly programmed drum groove. If that wasn't enough, there are some awesome remixes on offer too. Shawn O'Sullivan and Katie Rose AKA Further Reductions turn in a fantastic version showing off their minimal wave/techno crossover style, as seen on last year's awesome album "Woodwork" on Cititrax. Then label mate and fellow Berghain resident Answer Code Request steps up with two versions; or visions, if you will. The first being a straight up, cyclical peak time destroyer. Wait until that breakbeat comes rushing in. The revision being a beast of a track. Broken and sub bass driven with a sinister squelching melody, then those huge dramatic strings come in!

Who could forget The Obliteration of The Berghain and Rainbow Delta. The tracks on here are a return to form by an artist now considered one of the modern greats. The pounding kick drum workout of "B-PAX" is as well engineered as only a Berghain resident could execute. Review: Originally released on Music Man back in 2003, Fixmer's "Mekanik" has stood the test of time. If anything, it sounds more relevant now than before thanks to a renewed interest in all things wave and ebm. So what are these remixes like? Kobosil's "44 Version" is the most dance floor friendly, with a hammering industrial rhythm playing a supporting role to rave stabs. Norman Nodge's take is more understated, as insistent acid lines rise over a metallic rhythm and his Berghain colleague Marcel Dettmann's "Leitmotiv" version moves into the abstract realms, with whirring ticks and clicks supporting the original's pulses. That's not forgetting the original version, where shrieks, grunts and groans play out against one of the most powerful rhythms in techno.

Review: It seems Function is a fan of Cassegrain & Tin man material as he's just signed them up for his next release on Infrastructure New York. For this second Berghain 07 sampler, Function's appetite for boomy, acid techno is whetted by the collaboration's "Oxide". Meanwhile, former flatmate Ed Davenport, aka Inland, delivers "Sca Fell", a subaqueous workout that would get the Mike Parker seal of approval. DVS1 throws down some trademark warehouse beats with some caustic stabs to boot, while Steve Bicknell delves even deeper into the abyss than he did on the first sampler, with a track that's as menacing and frenetic as what Drexciya can be.

"Odyssey #1" is a distorted gyration through fizzy atmospheres and chocked bleeps, while Post Scriptum's rolling "Human Timescales" is a cross between the Hauntologists sound and the beats heard on Tobias' Leaning Over Backwards album, also released on Ostgut Ton. There's some transatlantic vibes on LB Dub Corp's "So Much", while the emerging Blue Hour sees his zapping drum track keep the sustain on his synth locked for the entirety of the track.

Review: German producer Nick Hoppner has long been part of the Ostgut Ton family, releasing his first material for the imprint way back in 2007. Here he finally delivers his debut album, Folk, a set whose title hints at the warmth of his attractive, melodious and often sumptuous blends of atmospheric techno, deep house and organic-sounding instrumentation. At its' best, the album is simply superb, delivering cuts that feel equally at home seeping from home stereo systems as booming club sound systems. In this category we'd put stand outs "Come Closer", the classic sounding "Out Of", and the dub techno inspired basement hypnotism of "Rising Overheads". It is, though, all good, with Hoppner proving adept at the very specific demands of the album format.

Review: Away from her more austere techno output, Steffi can known to be a big lover of unabashed party-time electro, and it doesn't get more exuberant and catchy than this collaboration with Dexter and Virginia in a departure from most of the output you'll find on Ostgut Ton. "Treasure Seeking" is a craftily penned crossover cut with as much pop nous as underground clout, with Dexter's squelchy sound-design looming over the mix. The "130 BPM" version gets a little more of that Detroit electro style looming over proceedings, while Diep delivers a straight-talking Motor City techno version loaded with plush string synths and stacks of energy.

Review: It's been nearly two years since Virginia's last solo single (the well-received Loch & Hill), making this belated return to Ostgut Ton well overdue. Pleasingly, it sees the Brazil-born producer in fine form, indulging her love of melodious, synth-laden productions and shimmering, emotion-rich deep house. Opener "Fictional" seemingly fizzes from the speakers, with yearning, one-note chords and bubbling electronics melodies riding a thick synth bassline and rolling deep house groove. "Never Enough" and EP highlight "My Fantasy" both sit somewhere between atmospheric deep house, Metro Area and contemporary deep disco. The latter is particularly good, and somehow manages to seem slightly sad despite its cheery, floor-friendly appeal; a genuinely bittersweet gem, in other words.

Review: When announcing the release of her sophomore set, Steffi Doms told Resident Advisor that it was "much more about how I see the dancefloor these days" than her "conceptual" 2011 debut, Yours & Mine. While there are some IDM and vintage electro influnces - most notably on opener "Pip", throbbing electrofunk jam "Treasure Seeking" (a hook-up with old pals Dexter and Virginia) and the picturesque closing track "Fine Friend" - for the most part Doms sticks rigidly to the kind of club-friendly fodder with which she made her name. By and large, this means vibrant, Detroit-influenced techno, with the throbbing "Bag of Crystals" and sci-fi leaning "Selfhood" standing out.

Review: At what point did the wave of New York house producers become closer in sound to their European peers? The turning point was perhaps the launch of Anthony Parasole's The Corner label. Whether this is the case is unclear, but there is no doubt that the US producer's links to Berlin strengthen with the release of My Block on Berghain's in-house label, Ostgut Ton. Ironically though, the title track has more in common with UK techno, its rolling drums and loopy tones sounding like a sleek and dynamic update of late '90s techno tools. "Bizarre" has a more mysterious feeling as Parasole drags the listener down a tunneling groove that sounds influenced by Prologue and Dozzy, while "Typhoon" reverts to the dense, loopy sound, this time realized through a filtered prism.

Review: It's the onset of a brave new era for Ostgut Ton as Panorama Bar 06 signals the label's decision to halt the manufacturing of CDs for their much loved series of mixes. Due for free download via the Ostgut site on August 11, the Berlin operation have not forgone the vinyl format with all the exclusives gathered by mix curator Ryan Elliott pressed up across a pair of 12" samplers. And boy did Elliott call in the favours with this first sampler featuring new and unreleased music from Neworldaquarium, Roman Flugel, Terrence Dixon, Tuff City Kids and Borrowed Identity. It is an overall exquisite selection, running from the ambience of NWAQ's contribution to Flugel's big room stomper and the sweeter, more playful sounds of Tuff City Kids and Borrowed Identity.

Marcel Dettmann - "Light" - (2:33) 131 BPM
Review: A second sampler for Ryan Elliott's newly dropped Panorama Bar 06 mix opens with "Take It Slow", a rugged house jam of the finest order from The Oliverwho Factory and proceeds to take in cuts from former label manager Nick Hoppner, Deadbeat, Dettmann and Sushitech mainstay Makam. Individually the standard of these exclusives is remarkably high and it will be interesting to see how Elliott has slotted them all together for the free to download mix. If we had to guess, Deadbeat's superb glistening house burner "Woah" would make an appearance towards the end thanks to his high tempo, whilst Dettmann's swirling layers of ambience on "Light" feel very much like a set opener.

Cursor Item Only (Peter Van Hoesen remix) - (6:16) 127 BPM
He Said (Blue Hour remix) - (5:23) 132 BPM
Review: There's a definite "no-nonsense" feel about this latest Tobias EP on Ostgut Ton. Simply titled Remixes, it sees a quartet of producers turn in typically locked-in re-interpretations of classic Tobias tracks. Matthew Jonson and The Mole join forces to turn "If" into a ten-minute chunk of broken tech-house - all bubbling electronic rhythms, relentlessly bumpy acid lines and crackly late night textures. Peter Van Hoesen takes a trip back to the early '90s with his spiraling, acid-flecked rework of "Cursor Item Only" (think Brown Album era Orbital, with a little more 4/4 techno grunt), before Blue Hour deliver a pulverizing version of "He Said" that's by far and away the EP's most bowel-bothering moment. It's no-holds-barred techno and then some, with one almighty sub-heavy bassline.

Spiritoso (club version) - (7:18) 125 BPM Hot
Martellato (club version) - (6:56) 129 BPM
Review: Let's not lie, how often do you see, or need, the words 'club version' alongside a Marcel Dettmann production? In this case, for the tracks "Spiritoso" and "Martellato" it makes sense considering the original two were disjointed, industrial-tinged scores for a conceptual performance which took place in Berghain. The first club version strips away the Panthu du Prince-style chimes and chirping bird effects and boils the piece down to a dusty beat with a resonating ambience, sinewave sweeps and the odd piano crash. "Martellato" in its original form is a haunting Phantom Of The Opera type production with this club version somehow transforming it into a watery and dubbed-out piece of tense, minimal techno.

Euphorium - (11:14) 128 BPM
Aetas - (8:54) 128 BPM Hot
Review: Throughout the MASSE soundtrack Phillip Sollmann & Marcel Fengler's DIN alias provided the Berghain ballet with the production's most challenging sequences. Those who enjoyed the track "RazKaz" from Fengler's Enigma EP from 2010 will warm to the subtle classical strings of "Euphorium", while bells similar to those heard on M.Bison's stage on Street Fighter II ring melodiously in an arpeggio that flickers like sunlight bouncing off the sea. "Aetas" is a production which fits in with the sketchy sounds of Tobias, and a poetic, spoken word vocal adds an extra touch of depth for a sublime cut of stony, deep, deep, house music.

Unknown Touch Two - (7:03) 124 BPM Hot
Review: Henrik Schwarz is one of electronic music's most revered artists for his ability to combine jazz, flamenco and classical music with house and techno. For this third MASSE package he provides one bespoke techno track, and a second floral arrangement of the aforementioned styles. The first, "Lockstep", provides a dubby beat while a dusty snare progression snaps away like Ectomorph on overdrive, highlighting how versatile Schwarz can be with the use of only a few elements - check out Sven Weisemann's "Trackz" for another great example of this. Schwarz's "Unknown Touch Two" sees the German back in familiar territory by providing a hot-blooded, Latin-laced and string plucking piece of cinematic music with a deft touch of house.

Review: With an additional run of three club-minded MASSE remix 12"s released this week by Ostgut Ton, the hugely influential label will round up their soundtrack to the Berghain ballet with this compilation. Phillip Sollmann & Marcel Fengler's Din collaboration provide some of the more experimental highlights with the Dettmann-esque "Aetas" and the industrial ambience "Creation" and "Generation", while as you'd expect Henrik Schwarz delivers splashes of flamenco, classical music and rocky pop to the compilation that's unrivalled in production by any other producer making techno.

Review: Originally released on the Berlin producer's second album, "Seduction" is less abrasive and more thoughtful than his usual fare. Over understated, tribal beats and eerie textures, Emika provides some indistinct but endearing vocals. Dettmann's own remix as Deuce is also thought-provoking rather than upfront. Over a pulsing bass and hissing percussion, he adds in screeching synth lines to add to the sense of drama. There's no danger of Dettmann or Ostgut alienating their techno audiences thanks to the remixes. Berghain resident Ryan Elliott turns "Seduction" into a rolling, driving groove, featuring a droning underbelly, insistent claps and the vocals buried deep in the arrangement. Anthony Parasole's version is impressive too, its jagged rhythms fused with what are in his hands screeching, deranged vocals.

Review: Given his relatively high productivity, it's something of a surprise to find that A Series of Shocks is Tobias Freund's first solo album since 2011. Happily, this return to longtime home Ostgut Ton is impressive. Beginning with the beatless melodic pulse of the Steve Reich-influenced "Entire", Freund works his way through a range of clandestine techno compositions, touching on claustrophobic acid and intense late night thump ("Testcard", "Ya Po"), scratchy Chicago jack ("Instant"), deeper moods ("The Scheme of Things") and, most thrillingly, early '90s influenced intelligent techno. It's in these moments - "If" and tactile ambient breaks of "Cursor Item Only" - that A Series of Shocks really flies.

Review: The brilliant Answer Code Request follows releases for his own imprint and Marcel Dettmann's MDR label to make his Ostgut Ton debut with the Breathe EP, which delivers three cuts of his individual brand of weighty, breakbeat-inspired techno. Each of the three tracks sees him in particularly ravey form; "The 4th Verdict" combines a chugging synth line with minimal Mills-inspired percussion, while "Ghostes" offers a suitably spectral vision of club techno in its cavernous chords and heavy breakbeat rhythms. The title track however must be his most euphoric to date combining headspinning chords with taut drums - another killer from ACR.

Review: Ostgut Ton return to Fokus, last year's accomplished debut album from Marcel Fengler with a suitably high profile remix EP. Offering a more well rounded and experimental display of Fengler's production palette than the functional techno he's issued in singles, Fokus has been a definite highlight thus far and it's interesting to see who has been chosen to rework tracks from it. Shed and Dave Clarke are naturally the headline draws here and their respective takes on "Jaz" and "Sky Pushing" are as full throttle as one would expect but it's nice to see Solar One boss Robert Witschakowski get the exposure his work as The Exaltics deserves with a killer throbbing Italo-techno rendition of "King Of Psi".

Review: Dave Sumner's debut album as Function was one of this year's most anticipated and finest LPs. Atypically, this remix package sees the commissioned producers deliver versions that measure up to the original material. On the dance floor end, there's Rrose's punishing take on "Against The Wall", which starts with a hypnotic, linear rhythm that descends into distorted mayhem, while Recondite's version of "Incubation" marries dramatic filters and insistent bleeps to reach a climax. But when the remixers go as deep as the author, the results are truly fascinating. NSI's take on "Inter" is a sprawling, jazzed out interpretation of the original ambient track, while Vatican Shadow delivers an uncharacteristically melodic, acid-tinged version of "Psychic Warfare".

Review: Ostgut's year of high profile album releases continues apace as Luke Slater graces the label with an album under his lesser spotted alias L.B. Dub Corp. Despite their being only four L.B. Dub Corp releases over a seven year span, it's still a name synonymous with the Mote-Evolver boss and has served up some considered highlights of the producer's distinguished discography. Unknown Origin arrives on Ostgut two years after Slater's excellent Planetary Assault System long-player for the label and sees him explicitly look to alternative poetry for inspiration with dub poet Benjamin Zephaniah a prominent presence, contributing to two tracks on Unknown Origin. Despite this, the mood is still resolutely Ostgut and Slater's pedigree is clear throughout.
