Pareto Park Eight
Tachini - "Waardering" - (7:45) 124 BPM
Ford Foster - "Drugs In Secret" - (5:02) 123 BPM
George Lanham - "The Judging Eyes Of The Congregation" - (4:45) 132 BPM
Mslwte - "Fuck Fashion" - (6:27) 135 BPM Hot
Played by: Trevor Benz
Review: Hang onto your hats and lock up your daughters, Pareto Park returns with a heavy-duty split release. It starts off relatively innocuously with Waardering's "Tachini", a brooding pulse that climaxes with rich textured chords, but from there on in, things start to go crazy. Ford Foster's "Drugs in Secret" sounds like an update of Robert Armani's rough ghetto techno, with wild sirens going off over distorted kicks. However, it can't compare to George Lanham's "The Judging Eyes Of The Congregation". Boasting a higher tempo, its deranged metallic riffs and screeching vocal is nothing short of apocalyptic, while Mslwte's "Fuck Fashion" is of a similar disposition, with splurging acid unravelling over distorted kicks.

Harfang EP

Derelict - (4:31) 130 BPM
Harfang (Exium remix) - (5:45) Hot
Claustrophobia - (5:42) 130 BPM
Review: The Pareto Park label is only a few releases in, but they've certainly made their aesthetic known: big and abrasive. Their sixth release comes from French hard techno producer Minimum Syndicat, a release that also comes bundled with a remix from Spanish hard techno purveyors Exium. The title track, which Exium completely strips back, suits the District 9 styled artwork of the EP, as moaning metal synths and rattling industrialisms shower down on the track like a mass of alien artillery. In between the echoing metal thwacks of "Derelict", grunting, insectoid synths fill a compressed void, while the EP's final track, "Claustrophobia", maintains a gritty and reverberating groove for the track's entirety.

Review: Pareto Park captures the new wave of tough techno on the third Pre-Emptive Action. Tachini's "Broedplaats" kick-starts the release with its slamming beats and looped vocal, followed swiftly by the growling bass and rolling groove of 1/2 of Rodney's "Outside Closed Minds". Dead Sound ramps up the intensity further with "Underskin", its relentless jackhammer riffs and metal drums reminiscent of the classic Alter Ego vs David Holmes release "The Evil Needle", considerably beefed up. But the predominant sound here is based on slamming rhythms, and menacing, gritty riffs, as demonstrated by E La Luna's wonderfully dark "A Kind of Music".

Residual Image Of Detroit (Adverse Event remix) - (7:49) 132 BPM
Extraction (George Lanham remix) - (5:07) 128 BPM
Review: The harder end of minimal techno is the prevailing sound of Extraction. It's clear that Dare & Haste have closely followed Rob Hood's more visceral releases as well as the relentless assault of Jay Denham's Black Nation catalogue. These influences manifest themselves most audibly on the jarring riffs of "Emptied Hall", the jackhammer intensity of the title track or on "Fear Engineering", where a buzzing bassline accelerates the onset of an irresistibly gloomy techno groove. Added to these original compositions are some excellent remixes, including Chris Finke's dubby, acid-flecked take on "Extended Sink Device" and the eerie, isolationist minimal of Jake Conlon's version of "Residual Image Of Detroit".

Preemptive Action Part II
Dead Sound & Videohead - "Pay Your Due" - (4:46) 129 BPM
George Lanham - "Rationale For Revenge" - (6:03) 128 BPM
Jake Conlon - "Pull Your Neck In" - (5:08) Hot
Ryogo Yamamori - "Hammer" - (5:56) 130 BPM
Morfogen - "Morfokone" - (5:24) 134 BPM
Played by: Mudrost, Jay Wong, Posthuman
Review: Following the first part of their Preemptive Action compilation, Pareto Park return with part 2; first up are Perc Trax's Dead Sound & Videohead, offering the hefty broken techno of "Pay Your Due" which has much in common with Forward Strategy Group's hefty but measured productions. Label boss George Lanham's "Rationale For Revenge" is similarly brutal, bashing out an overdriven chord over distended drone sirens, while Jake Conlon's "Pull Your Neck In" takes the pace up considerably with its jackhammer kicks and throbbing bass pulse. Ryogo Yamamori's "Hammer" offers his own industrial take on acid complete with sonorous metallic snares, and Morfogen's "Morfokone" provides a suitably underground take on big room techno with its rapid, almost trance like arpeggio. All in all a tidy package from one of techno's most promising young labels.

A Stake In The Ground
Ridley Road (original mix) - (5:49) 128 BPM
Cambridge Offensive (original mix) - (7:38) 126 BPM Hot
Cambridge Offensive (Dead Sound remix) - (5:23) 131 BPM
Ridley Road (Minimum Syndicat remix) - (5:09) 130 BPM
Played by: Mirko S., Posthuman
Review: Establishing a new techno label is no easy thing, but on the strength of Pareto Park's first release from label head George Lanham they should have no trouble making their voice heard. Opener "Ridley Road" comes on with an almost geometric precision, a series of siren-like synths riffing off against thundering kicks. "Cambridge Offensive" meanwhile has all the industrial savagery and subtleties of Perc's finest, with crushing beats and corrugated iron stabs. Perc Trax's Dead Sound proves an inspired choice to remix the track suspending the rhythms in a mid-air stasis whilst driving forward with ruthless momentum. Minimum Syndicat's remix of "Ridley Road" meanwhile combines Skudge's brand of hypnotic looping and house sensibilities before losing its mind with a brain melting arpeggio at its climax. Highly recommended.
