Pick N Mix

Hailing from south London, Pick ‘n’ Mix is a label launched by a DJ named TJ who set up the platform in 2018 to ‘push the future generation of drum and bass from all perspectives and create a path for newer, younger talent’. Initially kicking things off with free downloads, Pick ‘n’ Mix has gone on to release tasty tracks from the likes of: Refracta, DJ Gaw, Nautik, BlckHry, HEXA, Zoro, Sota, Vital, Magenta and more. Pick ‘n’ Mix is also responsible for releasing ‘The Black Excellence LP’ following the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement in the summer of 2020. The 15-track album makes a strong statement, showcasing black talent in drum and bass.

Review: Man of the moment Formula returns to Pick N Mix with two hair-raising tear-ups especially for the sunny season. 'Workin' has us rolling our sleeves up over a jagged bassline funk and an eerie array of eastern pipes. Ice cold and rolling like a juggernaut, it's in good company as 'Now You See Me' follows with more layers of tension and off-beat funk. Infectious, fun to mix and guaranteed to stir up melty faces on the floor, no one is crushing it like Formula right now.

Review: Holy mother of sugar-coated shoplifting, TJ has put together Pick N Mix's biggest ever VA right here! The second edition of his label's All Stars series, here we're treated to 30 reminders why drum & bass is in the safest of hands with the new generation. Highlights are all over the shop and spilling from the shelves... Formula's Serum style less-is-more revs on 'Dragster's Den', Hexa's redeye romp 'White Widow', the sexy snap and swing of Lovell's 'Deja Vu', Yoteii's quirky funk and church-sized harmonics on 'Gameboy', MLH's surreal echoes and torn up harmonics on 'Technique'. The list goes on...

Stay Together
Stay Together - (4:34) 172 BPM
Review: Quick maths: Pick N Mix + Rantik x vibes = Pure gold. Both artist and label on serious fire right now, 'Stay Together' is an epic meeting of so many things. North and south, emotional and heavy, light and dark, vibes and moods... All articulated with big rushy synths and enabled by skippy, steppy drums. If you like the sounds of DIVIDID and the work of IMANU but you like it with a bit more UK flavour and energy then we guarantee you'll be all over this. Come together, stay together.

Review: Not content with making his debut on Born On Road this week, the one and only Refracta also returns to Pick N Mix with this highly-springy, highly-vibed trip across the continent to the French capital. Another one-track head-shot from TJ's non-stop Pick N Mix, 'Paris' carefully balances everything that's exciting about this Scottish rising talent; grit, vocals, light, dark and an unusual groove that consistently stands out. C'est tres bien.

Weird Tech - (4:51) 175 BPM
Review: Yes yes yes: Pick N Mix have just announced a brand new Allstars collection which we have no doubt will be packed with killer innovation from the most exciting new-gen talent names TJ can find. First up is a debut from a well established Norwich DJ named Elder who comes with a big statement piece - 'Weird Tech'. Deep, dreamy but underpinned with a serious grit that ensures its peaktime status, this is a fantastic shout for both Elder and the forthcoming album from PNM. Bring it!

Dragster's Den
Dragster's Den - (3:47) 175 BPM
Review: Racers, start your engines! Formula's back with another fast-lane fire-up as he drives straight into pole position in the annual Pick N Mix car meet. Continuing his unblemished record on the likes of Invicta, 'Dragster's Den' is another diesel fuelled piece laced with dark matter funk. Gruff, rough and swinging low and just a teeny bit off-grid, its reminiscent of a Serum jam in all the best ways. Strap up the seatbelts, this is where we realise Formula's surname is actually One.

Alien Intelligence - (4:58) 175 BPM
Review: What does the RBM in Benji RBM stand for? Rude boy messages? Raw bouncy missiles? Really banging music? We don't know. Frankly we don't care right now either as this music speaks for itself in the best way possible. 'Say Something' is a tightly coiled stepper with some great vocals that work with the rhythm and tension of the piece. 'Alien Intelligence' continues the tension with an excellently off-grid and wonky bassline over more chiselled beats. It's clear with Benji that intelligence doesn't just stop at aliens. Rated: Bloody marvellous.

Luxure
Luxure - (4:28) 175 BPM
Review: Scottish talent Refracta returns to TJ's ever-sweet Pick N Mix stable with this special track. 'Luxure' by name, luxury by nature; the track is a deep weave of shimmering crystalline elements that are designed solely to give you shivers and send you to space. Bordering on the maximal sound of someone like Bobby Tank but in a dnb style, this is an exciting new sound from one of the most consistent new artists in operation right now.

Review: With some funky cartoon artwork, Bruk has landed on Pick N Mix with a hard-hitting four-tracker which combines a penetrating sense of attitude with a non-nonsense approach to musical arrangements. 'Trekker' has an 8-bit, Souped Up vibe in its arrangement that feels carefree and no nonsense and is perfect for a crowded dancefloor, especially with its underpinning in some weighty percussion. 'Take Me Down is the heavier of the four and grounded in glitchy atmospherics and a sense of space which makes it a pleasure to listen to, its snapping drum line providing the ground rock underneath. Yes boys.

Review: Addicted is back, using his powers over on Pick N Mix to hook you to his sonic concoction with an EP that doesn't hold back. Its not the kindest on the ears but then again it's not supposed to be, it's a monograph in crafting choppy, violent bass-scapes designed for the dancefloor. 'Alarm' is undergirded by a head nodding snare drum and percussive clarity, but the action happens in the steady, melodic but still raucous bassline, a stabby monstrosity of dancefloor proportions. The flip is just as potent, and this single is a must-have for those of you who love dancefloor weightiness.

Review: present at raves up and down the UK as well as across the channel. This is his latest release on the inimitable Pick N Mix, and it shows off his credentials properly, as he's roped in all the tightest sounds you can think of for big six-tracker. We especially love 'Upside', which is just pure attitude encapsulated in a 170 beat and some basses. 'Pimp Shit' smashes it in a pummelling number that honestly doesn't seem like it gives any fucks, and that theme is brought to life even more fully in the diving sub tones of 'Drowzy'. Banging stuff.

Mind Ya Business - (3:43) 172 BPM
Review: Following on the heels of his last absolutely wicked release, Slang is on Pick N Mix for a showcase in how to produce gruff, no nonsense drum & bass that hits you hard and steps over the body. Gloom is the perfect example, as Slank pulls out all the tricks for a raucous jump up tune that growls in its stabs and wobbles in the sub bass. The old school jump up vibe carries on into 'Mind Ya Business', with an urban edge to the sound that smacks sharply of the pioneering jump up producers of 10 or 15 years ago. Big stuff.

Review: Stick this one up your chimney! Following releases on the likes of Grid and Sub-Division, Alex SLK makes his debut on Pick N Mix on Christmas Day so let's bun the roast and trimmings and tuck into this feast instead; 'Game Changer' is the pigs in blankets, all crispy on the outside but that riff is just so meaty. 'Pressure' is the turkey itself. Big, fat and cooked to juicy perfection. 'Concussion' are the roasties. Coated with a crunch but loaded but soaking in sleazy dark funk fat. 'Sirens' is the Christmas pudding. Rich in groove, soaked in liquid and prone to flames. 'Silk Road' is the chocolate box. A sweet ending to an indulgent day, just like a good box of Heroes or Quality Street, it's full of all your favourite flavours and you never want it to end. Bit like Pick N Mix and Christmas Day itself. Switch up your game.

Review: At a time of peak fake news, we need someone like Hoax. Someone who, contrary to his name, is willing to serve up cold hard brutal truths. Truths like these two bashers on TJ's ever-tasty Pick N Mix imprint. 'Pull The Plug' doesn't beat around the bush with the elastic twangs and pulsating rubber ball bassline while 'Reptile' bites first and asks later with its rattlesnake shakers and sharp-fanged bass stabs. Pure rave venom; some Hoaxes are meant to be believed.

The results are as full flavoured as you'd expect; highlights include the tangy jungle nuances under the soft skin of 'Peach', the big horn drama and serious vit-c punch of 'Grape', the scurvy-defying, piano-tickling, breakbeat-busting 'Lime' and the euphoric charm of 'Passion Fruit' that's so potent it won't just keep the doctor away for a day like your common or garden apple but it'll keep that GP away from your door for months.

Review: Pick N Mix need no introduction. Sticky fingers, stinky bangers; TJ's imprint is at the very forefront of dnb's exciting new generation. Now they raise the game once again, amplifying their message with arguably the most important album in the genre this year: 'The Black Excellence' is 100% created by artists and creatives of colour from the artwork to activation and it slams down any question of lack of diversity in the game. Featuring the likes of Amplify, BLCKHRY, Dilligent Fingers, Kyst Cortez and so many more, it runs the entire range of sounds from deep and soulful ('Be Free') to dark and slinky ('Settle') to savage and rasping ('Legion') and reflects how exciting and wide-range the dnb sound is when it comes from a diverse place. One of the most prolific and consistent members of the Pick N Mix family, he's defied the curse of 2020 with a continuous slew of gritty, stripped-back hitters. 'How Deep' is no exception as we're bumped and blasted from b-line to b-line across this massive six track EP. Highlights include the twisted riffcraft, classic vocal lick and harmonic suspense of 'Mine', the energy and dark vibrancy of 'How Deep' and the absolute gutter funk of 'Check'. Review: Over on Pick N Mix Audio, Drowzee is landing with a single that blends the savage sounds of jump-up with effortless use of space and a clarity designed to impress but not overwhelm. 'For Me' rests on finger-click drum hits that intersperse with a wobbling sub bass and choppy bass staps, it's got that head-nodding vibe to the drums we all love and it's an all-round masterclass of blending funk and aggression. The flipside builds up with murderous intent above a body of furious kicks, before climbing the heights of euphoria into stabbing, flowing territory. Beautiful stuff.

File 'On Your Mind' under 'bubbler' thanks to its bouncy Q&A bassline that flips through the keys in style. 'Send4Me' just be filed under 'slinky, hip-swinging bashment D&B'. "Thump" takes the lead with a crucial spoken sample and trippy wobbled-out bassline slinking in and out of the tight breaks. Review: If you love expertly made drums, this will be the EP for you and although the basses are potently heavy, they rest on a foundation of percussion that's just pure vibes. It comes from Parallel on Pick N Mix, one of the best new age jump up labels, and it's a six tracker of devastating proportions. 'Man of Many Skill' is a proper roller, a track packed with sheer guts, as a movie sample spreads out above a direct, pummelling bassline that finds its excellence in its own simplicity. 'Rockers' has a fantastically infectious drum line that bursts with movement, while title tune 'Dream' has wide synth lines and an edge-of-the-seat, stepping drum line. Pitch perfect.

Review: A disruptor on the drum and bass scenes for a few years now Hexa makes his way to Pick N Mix, a label with a storied discography that's getting bigger by the month! Having released with other labels like Audio Addict and most recently with a contribution to Dilate Recordings, Hexa's swung minimal style surfaces in mini LP form. Drawing from woozy Wu-Tang-esque samples in between liquid rhythms, heavier bass and steppy percussions sections, you'' find that in tracks like "Vicious Cycle", "The Manchu", "The Box" and "Train" - all tips! "On Guard" introduces a heavy rave element with UKG vocal stabs alongside the bassline driven "Absence of Light". Top pick.

Review: Pick N Mix head up north for some Geordie grit as another one of the Toon's fizzy D&B community shines a scene spotlight on the city. This time it's KL who serves up a six-piece of gritty harmonics and distorted, curmudgeonly bass. Beyond the epic title track, highlights include the tense, graveyard-style deepness of opener "Buzzkill", the savage, haunted groaning of "Smoke Out" (with fellow Newcastle murker Hexa) and the twisted rifle riddim and savage steps of "Radiant". Now stop: "Hammerfist" time.

Review: Pick N Mix do one thing, and that's pump out absolutely wild cuts of destructive D&B. That's their sole mission and, not for the first time, they've roped in Magenta and friends to help them accomplish it, a producer who is more than familiar with the peculiarities of dancefloor pressure and twisted sonics. 'Distress' is arguably the best cut on the EP, with absolutely wicked drums undergirding a Serum-esque display of dragged-out bass wizardry and gurgling force - the back-end on this track doesn't take any prisoners. The other tunes are trademark Magenta, with the punching stabs of 'Slave' and the stepping aggressiveness of 'Champion Style'. Big stuff.

Review: Nautik is one of those artists with a low-key fantastic back-catalogue and after a bit of a slow-down in terms of output, he's back on Pick N Mix with a fierce EP that shows off some serious production skills. 'Super' is one of the stronger tracks, an expansive, growing number that starts in small pieces and gradually puts itself together, each synth sounds wicked and the combination of all of them is next level. 'Clowned' is very creative and has a unique rhythmic structure that some won't like but that others will love and regardless, it's a top-level cut to round out the release. Yes mate!

Review: Pick N Mix: A place where full fat variety comes as standard and you're guaranteed to leave with a blazing sugar high and the stickiest fingers imaginable. Since launching last year they've been responsible for a whole barrage of on-point fire jams from the most exciting names in the new-gen D&B movement and for their 10th release they've levelled up the selection in a major way. 20 fresh tracks from 20 killer new talents, the vibes here are so palpable you could chew them. Highlights include the techno-like insistency and of Alex SLK's "Gorillaz", savage tear-out in the form of Vital's "The Game", Zoro's Dread-bass warp wonder session "Buss It", Magenta's MC-fronted bash-about "Purpose", the list goes on and on. Sweet!

Review: Brand new UK duo Bunnerz make their debut on Pick N Mix with this punchy, varied stink-fest. The healthy vibe range is clear from the off as opener "Settle Down" kicks off with spiky jump-up intent before "10 Stripes" follows on a moody, groaning sewer note. Other highlights include the rifle-like midrange bass fluctuations on "Reaction", the cheeky swagger and funk of "Recon OG" and the hectic twists and turns of "Merked". An impressive debut; keep Bunnerz on your radar.

Review: Hexa is landing on the always consistent Pick N Mix with a full-length LP for your ears. 10 tracks long, Point of Contact blends more rolling and melodic sounds with the groaning, jump-up influenced bits that we know well from both him and the label. 'Magento' features the always good Sydney and it packs fantastic drum work, with snapping snares interlocked with shakers and big kicks to propel the vocals and bass onwards. 'The Korubo Tribe' is more massive and made for the dancefloor and it's in this area that the LP excels, especially alongside tunes like 'Cosmos' and 'Point of Contact'. Wicked.

Review: Coming in hot off the back of some great releases is both Sota and label Pick N Mix, who have collaborated on the producer's 8Bit EP, a six-tracker that spans a variety of sounds, all of which are driving and filled with purpose. Title track '8Bit' is a jagged roller with a great flowing feel to the percussion and an arrangement chock a block with funk and soul, despite its constituent elements being far from soulful. That's the sign of a good heavy D&B track and both producer and artist have nailed it.

Review: Following releases on the likes of Overview and Delta9, Austrian deepsmith Division makes his debut with super on-point crew Pick N Mix. Proper tunnel vision business, if you know Division's sound you'll already have an idea of how hypnotic and immersive these will be. Five originals, one remix, all killer - highlights include the scattergun kicks and flabby subs of "Complication", the graveyard aesthetic of "Step In" and that purring cavernous sub on his Master Error co-lab "Possession". United we stand, Division we fall in love with...

Ask Somebody - (4:39) 175 BPM
Review: Bare Up, bare stinkage: Rampage-affiliate Bare Up unleashes his biggest tune to date in the form of "Ask Somebody". Obese in width and weight, full focus is squared plainly on the hooky riff that mutates and melts before your very ears before turning into a dramatic key-stroking riot on the breakdown and a cheeky twist on the second drop. Immense... If you're getting a bit of foghorn fatigue right now, this is the perfect tonic. You better ask somebody!
