Review: Once again the Planet Mu team have conjured up an experimental gem of sonic mastery as they welcome Jlin inside for a footwork showcase like you've never heard before. This exceptional selection kicks off with the glitchy drum switches and moogy bass pulses of 'Embryo', giving us an energetic injection right from the jump. From here we then navigate into the super-digitized synth scatters and bleeping melodies of 'Auto Pilot', next to 'Connect The Dots', which utilizes icy glitch slides and popping drum melodies for another bouncy expedition into the unknown. Finally, 'Rabbit Hole' sends us down a trippy avenue that we weren't expecting, launching syncopated rhythmic twist ups and warbling LFO monologs for a slightly confusing yet thoroughly enjoyable outro.

Review: Giving Planet Mu a sensational fourth album is Chicago footwork legend RP Boo - signalling his place in the game as Established! (In Europe) It all began back in 2013 with the release of the debut LP, Legacy, and for this most current installment RP looks back to a time when he was inventing Footwork, going out listening to disco and linking with the creators of house such as Paul Johnson (RIP). The album, too, reflects a time when RP Boo started DJing, inspired by the ghetto house and jack tracks that has influenced his music since, next to being a record about black pride, black dignity, black beauty and black creativity. Straight-laced bangers include "Be Of It!" next to the trippy vocal work of "Haters Increase The Heat!" or tribal soundscapes of "Beauty Speak Of Sounds". Classic footwork rhythms and stutters come through tracks like "Now U Know!", with chopped up loops and legendary samples keeping it real in "How 2 Get It Done!". Legendary.

Review: The real deal out of Chicago and embedded within the footwork elite - for real - DJ Manny crosses the Atlantic to drastic effect once more by arriving with an exceedingly fine album for Planet Mu. There's something unexplainable about this work, and perhaps a fitting word is substance, but it doesn't take long to realise that Signals In My Head will be something special to appreciate in the years to come. With such a deep, eclectic and inspiring sound, Manny himself expresses that Signals In My Head was a push to, "do something that nobody (in Footwork) had ever done before which is an R&B love type of album but still keeping it footwork, juke, house, techno, with a few breaks.". Heavy where it needs to be, full of soul and a touch of edge - true heads this is for you. Undeniable and super inspiring sounds.

Review: Basic Rhythm returns to Planet Mu with his second album for the label and fourth overall, Electronic Labyrinth. Arguably the freshest set of sounds to come from the adventurous UK producer yet, Electronic Labyrinth celebrate Anthoney Hart's 30-year career, as well as paying homage to his beginnings as a pirate radio DJ - notably through St Fabian Tower depicted in the cover art). With each of the tracks presented here pleasantly unhinged and disjointed, Electronic Labyrinth is anything but basic, full of hardcore distortion in "Techno" and "Acid Track" next to the more colourful sounds of "Larkin Around" and "Palace Of The Peacock". A super fresh album from a perpetually undefinable artist.

Review: A fans favourite for her fusion of western club music that takes in a select taste of Eurodance, rave and reggaeton to trap, R&B and instrumental grime, Chinese artist RUI HO makes her debut on Planet Mu with Lov3 & L1ght! Following two EPs for Planet Mu sub-label Objects Limited (and Chinese label Genome 6.66Mbp before that), Lov3 & L1ght explores transgressional themes of growth through a myriad of disparate dance styles and deconstructed aesthetics to in-your-face K-pop and EDM. The album also serves as Ho's debut as a vocalist with a direct reference in "Exodus 12" to Japanese-American R&B singer Utada Hikaru. A star is born.

Review: Warp, Hyperdub, Ninja Tune, and Planet Mu. Juno favourite Kuedo has done it all and seen it all. Being able to say that you've released on all those top labels must feel like a real accomplishment in his mind and, if not, we hope that our rallying cry at least tells our listeners what we think. He's back on Planet Mu with a new and highly anticipated LP, the masterfully named Slow Knife. His sound has matured a lot over the last five years, and the dude has gone from making interact post-dubstep beats to constructing veritable pop songs. Guided by his inimitable electronic twist, of course. To give you an idea, "In Your Sleep" is a deep, cerebral and utterly magnetic song that is a slave to no genres or styles, and one that could appeal across audiences; "Slow Knife" itself is also a beautiful crossover of many different sounds and ideas, all wrapped in Kuedo's singular haze. it's not similar to Burial in terms of sound, but Kuedo's clarity of thought and consistency of expression is certainly up there with the best in the game.

Review: Back in 1996, Richard D. James and Planet Mu boss Mike Paradinas collaborated on a bizarre self-titled album under the name Mike & Rich. A cult addition to their respective highly-regarded canons that saw the pair applying their braindance template to easy listening and funk, the album soon came to be known as Expert Knob Twiddlers thanks to the excellent cover art. Newly reissued on Planet Mu, the album has been "carefully cleaned up, re-edited and remastered from the original DAT tape [and] put into a more fitting order." Some twenty years on the album remains a playful listen made all the more compelling by the addition of seven previously unheard tracks. A must for any fans of Aphex Twin and u-ZIQ.

Review: Glasgow's Tom Scholefield aka Konx Om Pax has been an integral member of the Planet Mu crew, with his last LP from 2012 coming out through the label and proposing a very distinct strain of ambient. Across fourteen wide-eyed segments of sound, this new album Caramel manages to convey a mood rather than rely on the tactics of one genre of particular style. Sonic experiments such as "Perc Rave" complement other parts like "Manhunter" or "Mega Glacial". It sounds like the soundtrack to a vintage post-apocalyptic film, the sort of mood and tenebrous vibes heard on films like Akira or Ghost In The Shell. The percussion is tribal yet futuristic, the sounds are at the cutting-edge of electronica and yet manage to convey the remnants of old civilisations. From start to finish, it's an experience more than a listen. Sublime stuff.

Review: Mike Paradinas has been a cornerstone of the Warp imprint for years, and this compilation of tunes under the 'RY30' banner were being recorded all the way back in 1995, while the man was prepping other timeless material that saw the light of day. Luckily, Planet Mu have come in for the licensing and represented this incredible material over twenty years on. The first thing that should be said is that, much like the rest of U-Ziq's music, this is incredibly versatile music that has no age or genre. Of All of these tunes could literally have been produced yesterday in a flat in trendy east London, so in essence, Paradinas got there two decades before everyone else. The second thing is that these are songs that can be enjoyed by anyone, from techno lovers to soul slingers, precisely because they are largely genreless and deeply musical. It's a world of its own, and one that comes warmly recommended. Strong.

Review: Canadian musician Tristan Douglas first made his name with a slew of digital releases for netlabels like Cocobass and B.YRSLF Division under the name Margaret Antwood. A clear pun on the celebrated poet from his homeland, Douglas has perhaps wisely chosen to lose the Margaret and move forward as Antwood. Getting picked up by Mike Paradinas, Douglas delivers his debut LP as Antwood in Virtuous .scr and delves into the darker recesses of the internet. AI is a central theme to the album's 12 tracks, specifically the idea of whether or not an AI can have a set of ethics, whilst sonic reference points could be video game music and anime soundtracks.

Review: At a time when so many of its early contemporaries are rarely seen releasing these days, Planet Mu's 20th anniversary is even more of a cause de celebre. The powerhouse of uncompromising leftfield electronic music has pulled no punches when it comes to commemorating the time, drawing on the staggering roster including Kuedo, Remarc, Traxman, Falty DL, Machinedrum, Milanese, Vex'd, Neil Landstrumm and so very many more besides, bringing together tracks from the vaults, from forgotten times, some of which have never previously seen the light of day. With 50 tracks to delve into, this is enough of an education to school even the most learned mind.

Review: Master of the absurd and mind-shreddingly complex, Aaron Funk is back following his My Love Is A Bulldozer album for Planet Mu back in 2014. Considering how prolific he has been at times, this has been a recent quiet patch but the glorious racket of "Your Face When I Finally" puts paid to the peace with a fine display of the infinitesimal production style he made his name on. From lopsided time signatures and bewitching melodies to disgusting splats of noise and puerile sampling, noone manages to chuck everything in the pot with the same panache as Venetian Snares. There are calm moments, focused moments and utterly insane moments, representing a fine example of everything the sonic madman stands for.

Review: RP Boo, aka Kevain Space, doesn't always get the praise that he deserves given the fact that he is one of the pioneers of juke and footwork alongside the recently departed DJ Rashad. Space hasn't flooded the market with his music and instead has opted to keep his releasing schedule sparse, with only a handful of releases for the likes of London's Honest Jon's, (adult swim), and Dance Mania, of course. He has, however, already released an LP for the UK's Planet Mu imprint and he returns with another one for the now heavily established label. The mood is classic RP Boo, where the fourteen tracks skip and roll their way across 808's, provocative vocal chops and heavy low-ends. There are also more pensive moments on here, such as "Your Choice" (one of our favourite moments), "Kemosabe" and "Daddy's Home". All in all, this is a much needed joint for all the lovers of that Chicago juke sound...something of a rarity these days!
