Review: Cormac, the Queer Northern-Ireland born label honcho, returns after a bustling year with a second Polari compilation, "No Tears In The Backroom Vol. 2". Packed with synth-heavy swings, acid basslines, steamy vocals, and an abundance of fun, NTITB Vol. 2 it serves as a perfect introduction to the new year. Cormac, the curator, describes the compilation as a unique family, featuring contributions from label hitmakers like Jordan Nocturne, ROTCIV, and Louis de Tomaso, alongside fresh talents like DJ City, Nimmo, Shay Shaz, Hifi Sean, Joshua James, and Xols. With a 10-track journey that blends anthemic sounds, tapping into nostalgia while staying rooted in contemporary references, No Tears In The Backroom Vol 2 encourages listeners to embark on a dance-heavy pursuit that doesn't hold back. Notably, the label's profits from this compilation go to charity, supporting Doctors Without Borders, a politically neutral NGO focused on treating people in regions where they are most needed, particularly active in Gaza and around the world.

Review: The first volume in Kiwi's Hedonistic Tendencies series of EPs was a must-check affair in which the hard-working producer effortlessly joined the dots between rushing piano house, mind-altering acid breaks, nu-disco and sparkling Italo-disco. They opt for a similarly excitable, full-throttle approach on this second part. Opener 'String Theory' is a thickset, retro-futurist delight where spacey bleep melodies, intergalactic synth-strings and shimmering electronic motifs dance atop a chunky bassline and unfussy dancefloor drums. 'More Raves', meanwhile, is another fine, boundary-blurring affair built around mid-90s melodic motifs, Orbital-esque musical themes, rushing breakdowns, snappy beats and more thickset, speaker-bothering bass.

Review: If you're looking for your weekly fix of synth-y Eurodisco then a good place to start looking would be this five-tracker from Tjor, which takes the usual cosmic/Italo influences and gives them a light leftfield twist: there's an almost Gary Clail/On-U Sound flavour to "Azuli", while "Connection Found" nudges towards dark room techno. "Cosmo" is a little more your standard-issue Italo throbber, admittedly, but then we come to "The New Generation", which tears up the script completely with its fusion of rave, D&B, jazz iand UKG influences... and which is definitely the most interesting track here, even if it doesn't actually have much to do with "disco" at all!

Review: Something of a trip back in time here, as Polari bring us a four-tracker from Romain FX that mixes influences from cosmic/Italo disco, early Balearica and first-generation house. The lead track is well chosen, with 'Convention Of Love' standing out thanks to its sultry, spoken female vocal and air of Middle Eastern exoticism, but elsewhere you'll find the slab of sheer back-to-88 nostalgia that is 'Jungle Sex', plus the sweeping, dramatic and hi-camp 'Red Dreams', with its hints of Belgian new beat, and - to close out the EP on a similarly Middle Eastern-inspired note to where it started - the hypnotic, percussion-heavy 'Cairo Groove'.

Review: Here we have the first ever release from Polari, a new label set up by Northern Irish DJ/producer Cormac, and doing the honours is London producer Kiwi, whose work has previously graced imprints such as Future Boogie, Needwant and Optimo. 'Hit Me', the standout for this reviewer, is an uptempo instrumental that sits right on the house/disco cusp and sports some very 'Star Trek'-like synths as well as a euphoric hands-in-the-air piano line. 'Schulze' is more electronic-sounding and veers towards Italo, while finally 'Clack The Fan' is an almost archetypally Balearic affair that comes with or without a 80s-sounding male vocal snip that repeats throughout (or doesn't).
