Review: This latest helping of goodness from Villager is a very enjoyable listen indeed, coming to us courtesy of the Pretty Weird imprint, focussing exquisite flavour across five vibrant originals. We open up with the eerie synth work and moody drum bounces of 'Oracle Eye', before 'Every Step Of The Way' gives us a chop of hard hitting old school garage drums. Next up, grizzly rolling subs and high energy percussion on 'Walk Away Now', followed by the highly energetic 2-steppy drum skips of 'Sculptor' and luscious soundscapes of 'Floating' giving us a soft landing to round off this very well arranged EP with some serious finesse.

I Hope This EP Finds You Well
Crookers & Mr Oizo - "Johnny Depp" - (4:42) 123 BPM Hot
Crookers - "They Comin'" - (3:58) 125 BPM
Crookers & Mr Oizo - "Johnny Depp" (Nikki Nair & DJ ADHD remix) - (4:32) 135 BPM
Review: Mr Oizo hooks up with Crookers for a raw release that transcends genres. Crookers fly solo on "They Comin'", where vocal samples echo against dubbed out drums and razor-sharp percussion. The counterpoint between these elements makes for a wonderfully understated, spaced out techno track. "Johnny Depp", Crookers' collaboration with Mr Oizo, is more earthy. Powered by a rubbery bass and concrete kicks, it is peppered with dramatic French vocal samples and glassy synths. Label regulars
Nikki Nair & DJ ADHD are tapped to rework "Johnny Depp". In their hands, it takes on a radically different shape. Upping the tempo and layering the arrangement with feedback, they turn in a galloping peak-time banger that resounds to dramatic screeches and tortured tones.

Pax (Four Tet remix) - (5:20) 134 BPM Hot
Review: Chloe Robinson is well known as a DJ, but so far she hadn't brought her talent to bear on production work. That's all set to change though thanks to this debut release, where she works with DJ ADHD to deliver a raw EP that's tailor made for underground clubs. "Pax" is a grimy, jacking track that unfolds to sharp, doubled-up claps and gritty, stop-start drum patterns. "Steamin" is based on a similar approach; inspired by minimal techno, it is led by rough kicks, a snaking bass and sheet metal percussion. The pair proceed to layer a stuttering vocal narrative over this combination, which is sure to set it apart from most techno releases.

Review: Next up on Pretty Weird, we continue to explore exactly what it says on the tin as Villager brings forward a very peculiar collection of original soundscapes, kicking off with the droning synth textures and stuttered overlays of 'Siren Hymm', giving us a vibrant yet melancholy introduction. From here, the bubbling 2-stepper drums and crunchy rhythmic switches of 'Chlorophyll' provide a perfect bass for more unusual melodic inputs, followed by a more industrial run down in the blippy backdrops of 'Joint Resolution'. From here we dive into another glitchy display, this time taking a front facing UKG approach as 'In Town' combines sweet vocal textures with unusual percussive pops, before the aquatic bass squelches of title track 'Club Wonk' are let loose to play. Finally, the hardcore heads are in for a treat, as more skippy drums and unorthodox effects are glued together by a detuned synth stutter on 'Rave Bender', giving us an interesting closer to say the least!

Nikki Nair - "Startrack" - (5:46) 135 BPM Hot
DJ ADHD & Nikki Nair - "Rips" - (5:50) 143 BPM
Review: The Pretty Weird team have collected a very cool pair of acidic art pieces here as they welcome the sounds of both Nikki Nair & DJ ADHD inside for a rave-ready exploration. The crunchy moog synths and bubbling drum textures of 'Startrack' give us a very cool introduction as Nikki rides out solo, fusing nostalgic acid-house feelings with crunchy breakbeat drum textures. On the flip 'Rips' introduces DJ ADHD into the fold for a much more intense design, focusing on 808-style drum punches and distorted cymbal rhythms, giving this two-tracker a very unusual yet truly innovative feel. Tasty stuff!

The Analyst - (4:57) 141 BPM
Review: The emerging Nikki Nair all up in this bizz with a fresh two-track release for London label Pretty Weird. Straight outta Knoxville in the US, Nair's entry into club music mainframe has come through labels like Gobstopper, Berlin's TRAM Planet, Brooklyn's Discovery and the UK's mighty Scuffed Recordings. For Pretty Weird he turns in two bass-centric club tracks, with "The Analyst" taking leafs out of Bristol's club sound and saddling it up next to more European sounding electro, while the lead track "Scuzzy" sounds like Mr Oizo's "Flat Eric" squished and squashed by chopped up dubstep and gnarly acid.

Don't DJ For Free
Don't DJ For Free - (5:37) 93 BPM
Rhythm Junkie - (4:38) 140 BPM Hot
Review: During dubstep's original rise to notoriety, there were few producers who came to the table with as much originality as Silkie, who's smooth, soulful productions around the 140 area catapulted him into an instant fan favourite. We are therefore super excited to see him return here, courtesy of Pretty Weird, for two tracks of pure fire. The title track 'Don't DJ For Free' is a marching masterpiece, driven forward by bubbling LFO leads and punchy drum riffs, not forgetting some crispy cowbell action. On the flip we are blessed with 'Rhythm Junkie', another stomping creation comprised of smooth sub harmonics and dazzling soundscaping.

Review: Barely Legal invites the man-like Chimpo over to Pretty Weird towers for some all-out jungle-stepping fun. A wry head-nod to Bristol cavalier DJ Die, it's all about the skipped-out breaks, time-stretched washes and dextrous arpeggios. The remix is just as important as UKG pioneer El-B goes into Ghost flipmode for a superb dark garage fix. Spoilt for choice; there's nothing weird about it.
