Under the Funk The System alias, Brazilian trio Wash, Chicco Aquino and Arlequim have been renowned party-starters since the mid-2000s. Here, they pop up on the Punchout label with a trio of floor-friendly edits and reworks. With its swinging house beat, P-funk synth bass and celebratory horns and vocals, "Funk Therapy" leads the way. Equally attractive is opener "Miss Rio", a cheeky rework of a long-forgotten disco-funk gem that pits contemporary production tricks (filters, new drums) against the original synths, horns and vocals. Finally, there's a blast of jaunty boogie in the shape of the delicious "Crush On You".
It's been a year since Tad Wily's last release, which was on Mullet Records. The latter is a dead giveaway as to the TW's style, which unsurprisingly is heavily indebted to the golden days of the early 80s. "Childish Fly" is an immaculately produced slice of vintage electro-hip-pop in the style of Kurtis Blow, Whodini or Grandmaster Flash. Perfect cruising music!
Vancouver's Darren Woodhead (aka Woodhead) claims to be a "West (Canadian) coast institution". We can't vouch for that, but we do know that he switched from touring in many popular punk bands, and this shift to disco has so far been very successful indeed. His latest offering, The Music EP, features four new tunes to get your chops round: the slo-mo funked-up house of "The Music", the party-fuelled clap-along "On The Floor", the smooth and lush boogie bomb "Electricity" and finally the contemplative, emotional funk of "Crazy Motion".
