Review: Seven years after delivering his debut album, Demuir has finally got round to recording a follow-up. The Toronto native's brand of house is chunky, groovy, deep and funky, taking cues not only from previous collaborators such as DJ Sneak, but also those of his contemporaries that make great use of dusty samples and killer drum programming. As a result, Visions manages to work both as a collection of club-focused cuts (especially in this expanded digital edition, which boasts a number of bonus 'dubs') and an album you can listen to repeatedly from start to finish. Our picks of a pleasingly strong bunch include the fluid, disco-tinged, Hipnotic-sampling brilliance of 'Mind, Body & Soul Call Me', TUSH hook-up 'Skylar' (a superb slab of gospel-tinged soulful house) and the delicious Fred P collaboration 'Dream II'.
Review: A new release this week by Canadian self-described 'jack master' Sicario, who has had recent releases on Late Night Jackin' and Turtle Wax Recordings. His new effort titled "Vegas Nights" is a serving of proper boompty house in the vein of local legend DJ Sneak. He then flips the script and serves up a remix of some other peeps' track; namely "To Be A Star" (Sicario Shell Casings Remix) by fellow Torontonian Demuir in collaboration with French veteran Phil Weeks (Robsoul). It's a jazzy, dusty, sample-laden excursion through late nite deepness, that you'll be feeling as much as we did.
Review: Purveyor Underground considers itself as 'the enabler of underground electronic music in its purest form.' It's an audacious call, but considering their releases from scene heroes like Demuir, DJ Sneak, Mark Farina, Javi Bora and more - they sure put their money where their mouth is. Next up on the label is Canadian export DJ Puntz dropping some solid grooves on the Gimme That EP. Features the title track which is vividly reminiscent of the late '00s west coast tech house sound's heyday, while the druggy and bombastic minimal funk of "IDGAF RN" is aimed squarely at the main room dancefloor.
