Review: In his career thus far Rob 'Airhead" McAndrews has been closely tied to celebrated school friend James Blake; the pair are regular collaborators, McAndrews plays guitar when Blake steps on stage and both are involved in the clubnight/label 1800-Dinosaur. Evidently a talented musician in his own right, the promise shown on some decidedly weird Brainmath material and more recent R&S releases is expanded here on For Years, the debut Airhead LP. The ten track set might finally see Airhead gain recognition without the need to mention Blake; there's certainly an accomplished approach here that focuses on willowy textures and slow builds and owes as much to post rock as it does post dubstep.

Review: To trace the trajectory of Alex Smoke's prolific career in the last 11 years takes some effort, but ultimately admiration for the many faces and phases he's explored throughout and with such consistency. His new effort for the legendary R&S features more of his sombre pitch shifted vocals over some dark, and at times pop inflected electronica, such as on "Dire Need", the bass heavy minimal techno assault of "Lossgain" or the sombre downbeat melancholia of "All My Atoms". This is Alex Menzies' first full length effort in three years since his Wraetlic album on Convex Industries and even exceeds that in its sheer brilliance. A tremendous effort.

Review: Glasgow minimal and tech house legend Alex Smoke getting the remix treatment by current scene favourites Tale Of Us? You better believe it. Alex Menzies originally released this track on his brilliant Love Over Will album in 2015. The slow burning, bass driven original is now given a driving and hypnotic remix by the Italian duo, complete with the mandatory wonky synth leads which'll sure whip the crowd into a frenzy. There's also an instrumental version of their dark journey track for those of you less keen on the vocals.

Review: Glasgow's Alex Smoke, long-time techno producer who had released a heap of quality cuts for labels like Soma, Vakant and even Convex Industries, has just released an album on Belgium's mythical R&S Records. Love Over Will is great, but we're here to talk about its remix compilation, an eleven-track remix orgy bringing together the very best of talent from every notable corner of the house and techno domain. Just to give you an idea of what you're buying into, there's brooding pseudo techno from Lakker, wavy ket house by Tale Of Us, a Tessela bomb that fuses techno, bass, jungle and pure noise under one roof, and a myriad of Alex Smoke dubs. The latter group should not be overlooked because they are some of Smoke's best and most mind-opening material to date, diluting all genres and disregarding any sort of traditional structure. Highly recommended.

Review: There has been a great run of new talent popping up on R&S lately, with Shanghai Den being a notable example, and now Alma Construct debuts here to drop a selection of lo-fi studies peppered with influences from techno to hip hop. There are some distinctive forces at work behind these tunes, not least on the decidedly unhinged and magnificently realised "Deer Drink From The River", while "Imagine Them" comes on strong with a snappy bounce that wouldn't sound out of place on Music Has The Right To Children, albeit expressed with less sleepy synth tones. It's a sterling effort that leaves one wondering what's around the corner for this hitherto unknown beatsmith.

Review: Legendary Belgian imprint R&S are always on the pulse when it comes to showcasing the most dynamic talents at present within electronic music. On this new various artists EP they feature some young guns with fresh and impressive sounds on display. Other than heading up the Sulk Magic imprint, you would have heard Bird of Paradise from his hot releases for the likes of Correspondant, Throne of Blood or Me Me Me. The Steve Leggett dub of "Alone Again" is a tough and banging jacker that calls to minds the sounds of Tom Diciccio or Berlin's Fachwerk imprint - not what we were expecting, but not altogether unpleasant either! By contrast, the evocative classic house vibe of G-Prod's "D-Light" is one of those tracks that has you in its grasp from the first beat. Its lush chord progressions and immaculate rhythm programming is one of the best tracks we've heard in 2018 thus far. Finally, they get back onto the heavy artillery in the form of "Collider" by Argentinian producer Hermetics: here's a brooding and slow burning industrial techno workout.

Review: Fresh from overseeing that excellent second Mosaic compilation, Exit Records boss D Bridge aligns on R&S Records with the heavy-duty 3 track Move Way EP. Given the label's recent techno centric direction, the presence of D Bridge on R&S might be surprising to some, yet the producer's work pioneering the Autonomic approach demonstrates his appeal stretches far beyond the realm of Drum & Bass. From the off, there are levels of outright rudeness that few can match, with the title track adopting a highly pressurised junglist swagger that's made all the more deadly by the snarling, aggressive vocal sample. Alongside this "Death Of A Drum Machine" sounds like the kind of vintage jazz flecked rollers Amon Tobin first made his name on, with added B movie Horror strings, whilst "Plain To See" applies the Autonomic approach to fizzing, downtempo synth play.

Review: Broken soul doesn't get much sweeter than Djrum's mystic brew. Now being served by R&S, we can expect more of it in the near future, including a new album! It starts right here as "Broken Glass Arch" takes the lead with bewitching over-lapped layers, distorted, decaying chimes and strange warped effects and chants. "Showreel" brings everyone up to speed over a two part serenade as Felix Manuel brings us together under star-lit keys, skippy beats and a constantly evolving mood. Christmas has come early for Djrum fans.

Review: After another impressive 2013 that saw label debuts from the likes of Paula Temple, dBridge, Alex Smoke and Tessela, as well as a debut album from Space Dimension Controller, Lakker are set to join the R&S fray with Containing A Thousand EP. Lakker will no doubt be delighted at landing a record deal with R&S as the two have been quoted on numerous occasions citing Aphex Twin, a R&S regular back in the day, as a major influence on their productions. That said, they've delivered their own individual sound to R&S, that, for the most part sounds like rusted robots rising to life out of a misty swamp, particularly the lurch of "Mausoleum" and injured sprint of "Thermohaline". There's a Stroboscopic Artefacts sound to the title track, while "Kantu" is rhythmic, tribal, and metallic. This is arguably their best release yet.

Review: Eomac and Arad AKA Irish duo Lakker are causing huge waves at the moment with their Aphex Twin-styled industrial strength techno, particularly with their recent release on Stroboscopic Artefacts. That album, Tundra, now gets the remix treatment by a seriously credible cast and to rather interesting effect. There are some real highlights here, for instance: the Mark Fell remix of "Oktavist" with its erratic bass driven assault tripping all over itself, but with such grace. Raster-Noton's Kyoka also turns in a sterling effort on her remix of "Three Songs" demonstrating her destructively digitised style brilliantly. Sam Willis of Walls under his new alias Primitive World also appears with his remix of "Pylon" taking things on a cosmic house tip and rather brilliantly.

Review: Bringing his madcap colourful styles back to R&S once again, Lone has another slice of sunkissed wonderment to impart, this time in a concise two track single. "Airglow Fires" leads in on the most joyous choral pads, only to be surpassed by even more bright and bold chord stabs which tell you this is going to be a party rocker. The beat comes ripping in to bounce off that opening riff and of course it flexes with a dexterity of unconventional means that reassures you Lone is in no danger of going soft any time soon. There is perhaps a more linear flow to the track which is no bad thing, making for a more focused and reliable party starter whilst retaining that inimitable Lone kink. "Begin To Begin" is less outre in its intentions, but equally funky as it hops around on a snagged house groove while the melodies chime out all around the depth and breadth of the mix.

Review: A new Lone album from Matt Cutler represents an about turn away from the more mellow tones found on 2014's Reality Testing back in favour for the rave tropes that characterised his output circa Pineapple Crush. The nine tracks on Levitate are rife with the energetic fervour of hardcore and jungle, blending peppy tempos and nimble drum licks with the trademark graceful melodies one would expect from a Lone record. You should be familiar with "Backtail Was Heavy," already been premiered via a phone line service and "Vapour Trail" which formally announced Levitate and the other seven cuts from Lone show Cutler is at the top of his game.

Review: As far as labels go, there aren't many out there that put together such original sounding releases as R&S. For this one they bring forward the atmospheric wonder: Lone for a powerful two track project. To start with, 'Temples' is an organic Asian influences piece of breakbeat production, incorporating crunchy live percussion and moogy synths. On the flip we hear 'Hyper Seconds' which is an immediate switch up. Through spacious use of processed vocals and stacks of stuttered arpeggios Lone builds a fabulous soundscape of electronic bliss.

Review: Following a hell-raising salvo of collaborative live shows, Appleblim and Second Storey consummate their long-standing studio partnership with this first missive of mutant grooves that play on their respective strengths in the wild fringes of techno, electro and bass. "Sid's Conundrum" fits and starts around a granite heavy kick, using a viciously angled rhythmic kink to provide a jump off point for all manner of sonic matter, deftly crossing generic boundaries in the process. "Ashford Swaithes" takes on a more measured tone, heading into warm and undulating electro thanks to a particularly rounded bassline that leaves plenty of space for psychoactive decorations, before "Dive Prophets" offers up an astral concoction of Motor City synth lines infected with the rude shuffle of UKG at its most limber.

Review: After rip-roaring their way into recorded existence with their first EP for R&S, Appleblim and Second Storey are back in the saddle with the second in their trilogy of EPs, and once again the psychedelic and starry-eyed electro of their live sets has been distilled into diverse and surprising configurations. "Formation" takes a softer approach than some of their other output, bathed as it is in sweet and aquatic ripples of melody before dipping down into a spangled twist on deep house. "Rant Check (parts 1 & 2)" meanwhile flexes much more muscular tones, whipping up the kind of flexible basslines and visceral sound design that burst out of the first EP before mutating gloriously over a twelve minute run.

Review: Boxed baron and all-round Slackker Paul Lynch builds on last year's EP Backwards Light for R&S with another sextet of instrumental grime distillations... Tech-influenced, spatially aware and a fine balance of dreamland synths and paranoid, cold dynamics; his signatures should be known to anyone with a passing fancy in future beat music and they're strong then ever right here: The freezer strings of "Swan Filters", the crushed off-beat riff and deep cave echoes of "Skeleton Crew", the tsunami waves of "Pigeons", the estranged synth boogie of "Hundred Flute", the shuffled take on classic electro that is "Replenish" and the final introverted eastern adieu "Returning Geese" all add up to an EP that genuinely stands out in the current sea of creativity instrumental grime is enjoying right now.

Review: Liverpool's Slackk first came breaking through on Glasgow's Numbers, before a series of more emotive/ melody driven records on Local Action and Unknown to the Unknown saw him emerge as a unique and influential artist working in grime. A Little Light, his first album for the R&S, is his most personal release yet. Partially inspired by the upcoming birth of his first child, this album sees him drop the tempo to an R&B 90bpm crawl at times, with the newfound space between his drums allowing his delicate melodies to flourish. Although the LP looks forward, it's also nostalgic, with references to UK funky, while at other moments he nods to early 2000s grime and house

Review: The past two releases by Alex Smoke have seen the Glaswegian make a big splash in the noisy pool that's R&S Records, but throughout all tracks on this EP there's the subtlest of synth-pop motifs centred inside a hard outer shell of techno. The wet acid and half-broken beats of "Green Man" sound like a futuristic combination of a Sisters Of Mercy instrumental mixed with Thom Yorke-style vocals funnelled into a circular Alex Smoke rhythm, while there's an Egyptian feel to the light tech house of "LSD". "Tommy Knockers" is the EP's high energy dance track, with detuned synths creating a melodic havoc in the background while "Oni" again remains on a Middle Eastern tip, this time with flecks of rave and a big serving of industrial atmospheric and percussion.

Review: In some ways, Dust shows that Scottish producer Alex Smoke values consistency over innovation. The title track contains the same slurred, melancholic vocals as early gems like "Don't See The Point". However, in other regards, Smoke has moved on. The title track features a complex polyrhythmic groove and a wobbly bass that twists and turns in and out of the arrangement, while Tessela's version is even more idiosyncratic. Featuring bursts of drum'n'bass percussion and a tearing, half-speed bassline that keeps on just the right side of distortion; it steals from the past to reclaim the future. Finally, Smoke returns to organic percussion and rickety rhythms for the atmospheric, introspective "Ruction Dub".
