Review: Historically within electronic music, January is notoriously difficult to get together solid releases, as the world awakens from it's New Year's slumber. However, Spekrfeks has put together a fantastic box of work with this brand new album project by the name of 'Sockdollager', courtesy of the Ragtime imprint. This one is packed full of original breakbeat energy from start to finish, from the sweeping electronic plains of 'Get Up' and 'The Darkness', to the more house-like textures of 'Gypsy' and 'Uh Oh'. This whole project packs a real punch from start to finish, with highlights including the experimental 4x4 flavours of 'Move On' and the jazz and funk infusions of title track 'Sockdollager'.
Review: Next up from the Ragtime crew, we witness yet another fantastic display, this time from Spekrfreks, who unveil their fabulous eleven track breakbeat spectacular entitled 'Roaring 20's'. From start to finish the team showcase a fabulous display of versatility and expertise, from the subtle dancefloor flavours of 'Dilly Dally' to the more experimental country guitar riffs and jazzy horn licks of 'Same As It Ever Was'. The funky switch ups of 'Just Let Go' also grab our attention, alongside the hard hitting 4x4 explosions of 'Fortuna'. Wicked stuff from start to finish!
Review: It's time to get uber groovy as Ragtime get down and dirty, bringing in Ninjula for a super punchy six track extravaganza, buzzing from start to finish with volcanic breakbeat energy. The title track 'Bass 'N Honey' is a reesey grooveball, with 'Deadbeat' alongside Nyxe being an exciting play on big band themes. We hear 'St James Infirmary' sample the classic blues record into a stinking dubstep-infused belter next, with 'Rat Trap' giving us a swingy send off and 'The Hardest Show On Earth' providing some serious grit. Finally, 'Low Bones', wraps the project up in style as it's hard house inspired bass tones fidget away amidst growling vocal slices and sharp drum work.
Review: Emerging seven-piece electro-swing outfit the Jenova Collective make their debut on Ragtime. Weighing in at a cool five tracks, it's a pretty extensive debut that showcases the band at their broadest and, indeed, funkiest. Highlights include the balance of happy-slapping riddim jacking and arpeggiated dreaminess on "Champagne Machine", the tight vocal loop and trouser-tearing bass tears on "It Ain't Right" and the raw euphoria of the vocal-led, synth-heavy "Digital Fandango". Well worth checking.
Review: Tuxedo Junction what's your function? It's their debut EP proper so let's find out.... The brilliantly titled "Nigel's Greasy Sack" flips from smoky trumpet parps to elephantine 4/4 electro slappage, "Bermuda Blues" takes us back to 2008 with some savage fidget wobble and scat-slammed vocal chops while "Stompin" gives us all an air double bass lesson over some Mr Scruff style steppy beats. Dig deeper for a pair of equally mischievous collabos: "Past Last Orders" gets busy on the glitch fizz with a little assistance from Captain Flatcap while "Lester The Cat" ups the tempo to a pant-swinging, whisker singeing horn-melting 170 tear-up. Debut EPs don't come any cheekier; we expect more from these Bristolian merrymakers very very soon.
Review: Grab your air horns and accordions, polish your gun fingers and get ready to swing your finest pantaloons as The Electric Swing Circus cook up a hip-plitting remix EP from their sophomore album It Flew By. All styles and sounds: Featurecast tears us all a new one with a jump up D&B workout, Wolfgang Lohr casts a jacking silky house spell, Jamie Berry brings a little two-steppy bump to proceedings while SpekrFreks provide the all essential glitch jam. Last but not least Document close the show with a slippery sci fi D&B stepper. All bases covered.
Review: There is no better time for swing than summer. It's perfect festival music, so it's not surprising The Electric Swing Circus have already secured status as al fresco faves within two releases. Here we find them revisiting their shoo-be-doo heavy debut with a trio of remixes primed for peak hoedowns. Vassili pumps up the electro swing-o-meter, C@ In The H@ flickers between distorted electro and gnarly dubstep and finally Sam Redmore has centred the emphasis around a much more simplistic and equally refreshing guitar and burp-bass groove.
Review: Should you want to inject some more drums, break downs and modernity into a great, doo-whoppy jazz track - check this out. The original is a seductive, but up beat horn blower which C@ In The H@ turns into a bouncing banger designed for the pop-infused and electro swinging dancefloor. There's some gnarly cut ups and tear out break downs in Mista Trick's drum and bass snarler, while downtempo vibes are abound in Odjbox's remix.
