Review: Hearty congratulations to Rayko, whose Rare Wiri label has just turned ten. To celebrate the label's decade in dance, the Spanish producer has put together this fittingly fine collection of archive cuts. It features no re-edits, just original tracks and associated remixes. There's plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the Clavinet-sporting crunchiness of Limpdisco's compilation-opening "Moving To '70s" and Spiritcatcher's D-Train style NYC boogie revision of Julian Sanza's "Can't Stop The Feeling", to the jazz funk-flecked deep house/disco fusion of Nowsense's "Smile" and Situation's wonderfully atmospheric electro-acid revision of James Rod's "Disco Rocket". Naturally, there are plenty of Rayko tracks and remixes dotted throughout, including a wonderfully spacey and bass-heavy take on Ilya Santana's "Electrik Mind".

Review: Rare Wiri bring us three new rubs of the tracks that made up German nu-disco regular Andy Bach's 'If You Leave' EP, released in November last year. Romanto's take on 'Come On Now' strips away the deep house elements and transforms it into a hazy summer nu-disco jam, Stephane Deschezeaux's Organic Remix of 'Dimesions' injects a little more funk and soul into what was quite a trippy, Balearic-leaning original, before 'If You Leave' - a fairly 'accessible' and pop-oriented nu-disco cut in its original form - gets handed over to label boss Rayko, whose rework gives it a deeper, more underground kinda feel.

Review: Argentinian producer Ivan Alexis Podwiazny comes to Rare Wiri with a three-tracker whose title provides a subtle indication as to the sci-fi infused grooves lurking within. "Quaranthesizer" opens proceedings, an unsurprisingly synth-tastic affair that we'll hazard a guess was probably made during lockdown! "Obi Wan Call" itself has a similar MO but is just slightly mellower, and sports some fine stabs as well as snatches of Alec Guinness dialogue, before closer "Worm Hole" takes us on the most authentically late 70s-sounding space disco excursion of the lot: think Carpenter and Moroder having some ecstatic fun in the studio and you'll get the gis

Review: Next up on Rayko's Rare Wiri label out of the Spanish capital Madrid is Bodie Lee, a DJ/producer out of Boise, Idaho who is a stalwart of the local scene since the '80s after getting his start in Seattle. He's had some great releases on Chopshop, Masterworks and Funk Factory and he certainly brings his A game on I Need You; the neon-lit title track provides the mandatory late night boogie-down vibes, while the slo-mo heater "Keep On Dancing" goes for an old school vibe complete with vocoder and killer horns section. Finally, the good times keep rolling on the low slung "On & On".

Review: Ever-prolific Spanish nu-disco fave Rayko recruits vocalist Elena Hikari, who also featured on last year's Tito collab 'You Are Not Alone', for a four-track EP on his own Rare Wiri imprint. 'Suddenly' itself comes in two fairly similar-sounding mixes - Cosmic Diamond's Guitar Mix is a little hazier and druggier, while Sauco's is a bit more straight-ahead. Elsewhere, 'Flying Where You Are' is all squelch, throb and Hikari's plainitive tonsils, while the midtempo 'Death From Above' is a hypnotic, pulsating groove that leans towards the Balearic, with Hikari's vox applied here in chopped 'n' looped form.

Review: What is there left to say about Rayko and his well-known ability to blur the boundaries between re-edits, remixes and original productions? The Rare Wiri founder is at it again here, delivering a retro-futurist three-tracker featuring some sizzling, mid 1980s style workouts. He begins in mind-bending drug-chug mode via 'Towers', where cosmic synth sounds, sprightly electronic melodies and glassy-eyed female vocals ride a seriously filthy bassline and delay-laden machine drums. 'Foto' is a slightly more up-tempo workout rich in tactile chords and undulating, arpeggiated bass that sounds like a cooler, club-ready instrumental riff on the Pet Shop Boys circa 1986's Please album, while 'Only Music Survives' is a sneaky re-edit of a Bobby Orlando style number smothered in rushing piano solos and cheery synthesizer lead lines.

End Titles - (7:09) 90 BPM
Review: There's no shortage of Italo- and cosmic-inspired disco around at the mo' and, with 'Italians Do It Better' opening this EP, it's fair to say you know what you're getting here! 'The Day The Earth Stood Still' is probably the pick for the hardcore Italo-philes with its Carpenter-esque synths, 'Blue Monday'-nodding b-line and sci-fi sonic stylings, while the smoother-flowing 'Italians...' probably has slightly broader dancefloor appeal. Competing the package is 'End Titles', a midpaced affair that's essentially a homage to the synth-pop and coldwave of early/mid-80s Europe - one for those whose DJ sets include obscure Falco album cuts n' such.

Review: You'll never get to meet Svoboda Zvuka, because Svoboda Zvuka isn't a person: instead it's the name of an unusual project that sees different musicians all over the world collaborating on tracks remotely. On average, we're told, each track takes around 48 hours to make and is the result of five or six different producers' labours. So who's behind the lazy Balearic throb of the original version of 'Eeya' is anybody's guess, but we can tell you that Belida's remix drops the tempo and turns up the bass squelch, giving the track an almost New Beat-ish feel, while Santai ploughs a more spangly nu-disco furrow.

Review: Greek disco stalwart Christos Antoniou AKA C. Da Afro comes with three very fine disco jams, brought to you by the ever-reliable Rare Wiri. 'Boogie In Control' reworks (and speeds up) Don Downing's 'Doctor Boogie' from 1978; that suggests the other two cuts may also be re-edits but if so, we couldn't tell you what they're re-edits of. Either way, 'The Reason' comes on like Byron Stingily fronting Moloko circa 'Sing It Back' but it's the authentically late 70s/early 80s-sounding 'Disco Hoping' [sic] that stands out, for its distinctive breathy, spoken female vocal sample as well as some fine strings.

Review: Tunesmith's breakout 'Disco Classic' featured on his 'Slow Disco' album earlier this year, but evidently he liked the title so much he's recycled it for this, his second Rare Wiri full-length in just six months. While 'Slow Disco' was a 'does what it says on the tin' job, the title this time is perhaps more in keeping with Throbbing Gristle's industrial/noise classic '20 Jazz Funk Greats', in that you won't find much in the way of straight-up, 70s-inspired disco here. Instead, Tunesmith carves out a new musical niche all of his own that sits somewhere between shimmering nu-disco, indie and out-and-out pop, with a heavy 80s influence - not least because 'Bands From The 80s' namechecks the likes of Duran Duran, Pet Shop Boys, Tears For Fears and FGTH!

Review: Spanish re-edit hero Rayko had a productive 2011, releasing some of the best cut-ups and disco reworks of the year. Here he begins 2011 in similar fashion, delivering four more tried and tested slabs of dancefloor funk. Opener "My Lady" does a terrific job at re-modelling a Prince-era, slap-bass heavy 80s jam, removing all but snatches of the vocal in favour of more instrumental groovery. "After The After" continues on a similar theme, going deeper into slow dance territory, while "Turn Me On Again" builds brilliantly over six delightfully sensual minutes. "This Is It", meanwhile, adds some head-nodding house flavours to a simmering 80s soul jam. Solid.

Review: Cal Gibson, a Nottingham-raised veteran producer best-known for his role in early noughties outfit Neon Heights, has had a new lease of life since re-emerging as Secret Soul Society. He has a decidedly Balearic album on the way for Hell Yeah! Recordings, but first there's the matter of this four-tracker for Rayko's Rare Wiri imprint. Gibson begins in predictably loved-up mood via the wide-eyed, sample-heavy tactility of 'Its Magic', an acid-splashed cut of the sort that fellow Notts boy Naill used to offer up, before successfully cutting up and dubbing out some heady Philly Soul on the druggy flex of 'Mighty Fine'. 'Minding The Seasons' is an attractive Balearic nu-disco throb-job, while 'Who Is The Don' is a spaced-out slow jam that makes great use of samples from a swamp funk treat.

Review: We don't know much about Manner of Speaking, the artist behind this EP, though Rare Wiri founder Rayko has described the producer as an "ambient warrior". The two original tracks on show certainly tend towards the downtempo end of the spectrum, with Manner of Speaking delivering woozy, layered, synth-laden electronic soundscapes that sit somewhere between electronica, IDM and the more psychedelic end of Weatherall-esque "dark disco". There's 'Zandloper', where moody chords and dusk-friendly melodies rise above a shuffling electronica beat, and the Giallo-meets-Vangelis soundtrack throb of 'Unseen Events'. Rayko remixes the latter, giving it a chugging, drum machine-driven spin (all crunchy electronic snares, TR-707 style kick-drums and Italo-disco riffs), while Ilya Santana turns 'Zandloper' into a hazy and clandestine nu-disco workout.

Review: Following a recent outing on Fingerman's Hot Digits imprint, Spanish producer Jaime Rodriguez returns to the loving arms of Rayko's Rare Wiri label. As usual, he's blurring the lines between re-edits, remixes and original productions, with "Gwen Wants Peanuts" being a brilliant example of his craft. While it utilizes a fair amount of Gwen Guthrie's "Peanut Butter", there are plenty of original elements that help make the track throb and gurn. Even better is "It's All", a straightforward - or so it appears - re-edit of Starpoint's 1984 electrofunk gem "It's All Yours". Rodriguez teams up with Fran Deeper to remix, offering a blend of colourful synths, electro-house attitude and nu-disco bagginess.

Review: All of a sudden, Rayko is getting a little nostalgic. Here, he goes Back To The Roots of his Rare Wiri imprint, offering up brand new remixes of the cuts that appeared on the label's first release way back in 2008. First up, Phunktastike and Julian Sanza remix Ilya Santana's "Instrumental Odyssey". Sanza steals the show with a sparkling Balearic disco re-rub built around his own rubbery electric bass, chugging beats and flowery synth solos. There's a similarly terrace-friendly feel about Sportito's breezy and atmospheric take on Rayko's "White Russian", while Lone Soldier turns the same track into a low-slung, Italo-influenced chugger.

Review: Two new fresh edits here from Spanish nu-disco hero Rayko. Although his debut album, Rebirth, came out recently, he's already left it behind in favour of new electro-boogie to plunder and rejig. "In Love" features the kind of laser-sharp basslines that could cut through a car, tight-as-a-gnat's-chuff guitar and seductive female sirens on vocals. However, it's the synth-drenched electronic rare groove of "Piano" that really nails it for us.

Mechanical Life - (6:46) 113 BPM
Review: Having spent much of his career impressing with a near endless stream of re-edits, in recent times Rayko has moved further towards original production. Here, he follows up his recent album of original material on Nang with a two-track hook-up with Landerground. Both tracks blur the boundaries between original production, re-edits and bootleg remixes. "Melancholy" - seemingly a version of something obscure and vaguely Balearic - fuses throaty vocals and simmering strings with bubbling electronics, saucer-eyed keys and pulsating, Italo-influenced bottom end. The slightly tougher "Mechanical Life" opts for a similar approach, basing the action around tactile synth bass, atmospheric strings and dreamy vocal hits.

Review: They're not yet confirmed stars of the global re-edit and rework scene, but NFC & Key Sokur are clearly producers on the rise. Here the duo makes their debut for Rare Wiri following rock-solid appearances on About Disco, Editorial, Onrika and Moiss Music Black. They begin a varied selection of subtly beefed-up, floor-friendly edits with "Japanese Funk", a bustling, bass-heavy take on a Hammond-sporting heavy funk number that will get even the most reticent of punters up and dancing. "Meu Tio" is a wonderfully summery, sun-kissed shuffle that adds new jazz-house style dancefloor chops to a Flameno-style Mediterranean number, while "The Bossa Nova Rain" is a lilting and lazy shuffle through samba-house pastures featuring new vocals from pal Azul Fourcade.

Brooding digital synth washes rule the roost with "Peyote Warrior" being all angsty electro-disco basslines, tropical pads and guitar wails, "Lucky Strike" features live-sounding bass and drums with layers melancholic electronics on top, "Juno Lover" is the sound of a stakeout under palm trees at night and "Play" the urgent and percussive soundtrack to a fictional car chase. Review: Madrid's disco don Rayko, is back on his own label for some pastel coloured edits on Rare Wiri Feelings Vol 1. Unbelievably he's tackled Frankie's '80s disco-sex-punk anthem "Relax" - possibly the most re-edited/bootleged '80s tune ever. However he turns it into a smoother electro-house workout, which largely works. "Dare" sees Linndrum fills compete with elastic slap bass resulting in a mid-80s Miami freestyle showdown and finally Hall & Oates' classic "Family Man" gets dubbed out in fine style.

Band's "On The Beat" to heavenly effect, "Satisfaction" is a moody glam stomp and "Sneak Preview" is slick soul pop, but it's the funk meets Italo-disco of the euphoric "Time Bandits" that's the standout here.

Logic BabyEXCLUSIVE
Ilya Santana - "Logic" - (5:42) 116 BPM
Rayko - "Baby" - (10:39) 115 BPM Hot
Review: Two Spanish stalwarts of the nu-disco and edits scene join forces on this two-track EP. As you'd expect from Rayko's Rare Wiri label, the emphasis is on re-edits, though there's enough additional production and contemporary trickery on display than you're average scalpel cut. Ilya Santana steps up first with "Logic", a decidedly cosmic, and trippy re-build of Japanese producer Logic System's 1981 electronic classic "Clash (Chinjyu of Sun)". Rayko, meanwhile, drops "Baby", a similarly dubbed-out and floor-friendly remake of what sounds like a forgotten Italo classic. Knowing Rayko, it could just as easily be something well known put through the mangler; either way, it's one of his strongest cuts for some time.

Review: One-man production whirlwind Rayko strikes again. Not content with re-editing every single 1980s electrofunk record (or so it seems), he's decided to head back to original production. It could be a wise move. Certainly, there's something rather special about the breezy Balearic house chug and twinkling pianos of "Altered States", the EP's standout moment. Elsewhere, Rayko sticks largely to a very European take on nu-disco, delivering sharp synth hooks, bubbling rhythms, electro-flecked grooves and bright melodies aplenty. There's a touch of low-slung disco guitar on the enveloping "Keep The Faith", and an Ilya Santana-ish headiness to the foreboding grooves and saucer-eyed melodies of "Space Surf".

Review: Having recently released his debut album proper - the vibrant nu-disco pulse of Rebirth - Spanish producer Rayko returns to the re-edit scene with which he makes his name. The Elektroboogie EP is typical of his style, delivering a mix of Balearic curiosities (the jangling, sunshine-friendly goodness of "Bring On The Night"), rubbery disco (the loopy electrofunk flavour of "Don't Make Me Waiting"), thick-set electrofunk ("What I Like"), dubby proto-house (a memorable version of Samson & Delilah's 1984 Paradise Garage classic "I Can Feel Your Love Slippin' Away") and well-known anthems (a tougher rearrangement of Joe Smooth's end of night Chicago house classic "Promised Land").

Review: After 12 years in the game, Spanish nu-disco stable have reached the 100-release milestone, and they're celebrating with an imaginatively titled compilation packing eight brand new tracks that have been handpicked by label boss Rayko. Obviously, with eight tracks from as many artists there's a fair degree of stylistic variety on offer, but the emphasis generally is on heavily electronic grooves - sometimes veering into Balearic/coffee table pastures, sometimes served with a darker, more leftfield twist. It's really more of a home listening album than a collection of club cuts, but for dancefloor purposes start with the contributions from Ilya Santana and Sauco...

Bioluminiscence - (7:26) 118 BPM
Review: Rayko teams up once more with semi-regular collaborator Fran Deeper for this two-track outing on his own Rare Wiri label. 'On The Beat' itself is up first, building from a gently rolling, Balearic-ish intro into a full-blown boogie jam complete with sugar-sweet soul vox, analogue stabs, brass fanfares and sparse, reverb-heavy production. The accompanying 'Bioluminescence' maintains the general 80s vibe but is a touch heavier and more wonked-out, its central New Beat-like synth-bass throb topped with light n' breezy keys and all manner of FX sounds: think Italo-disco heard though a progressive house filter and you're somewhere in the ballpark.

Cosmos Rising (Rune Lindbaek mix) - (5:54) 117 BPM Hot
Review: Spanish don Ilya Santana returns to Rare Wiri and ropes in Scandinavian counterpart Rune Lindbaek on remix duties. In its Original form, 'Cosmos Rising' - as you can probably guess from the title alone - comes from that part of the musical spectrum where Italo/cosmic disco and progressive house/melodic techno collide, and as such should work on any floor where they like it big, bold and trippy. But it's the Rune Lindbaek Remix that nudges it for yours truly, being an even bigger, bolder and trippier pass with warehouse-friendly kicks and some added spoken vocal samples paying homage to the special magic of the mushroom.

Prince Says Dance (2023 version) - (7:08) 120 BPM
Review: Two tracks in three mixes make up this latest offering from UK disco stalwart Andy Buchan. 'Prince Says Dance' is a slab of oddly restrained electronic funk that's got plenty of bottom-end squelch and an indecipherable, treated male vocal in its original (well, 2023 Version) form, before Chewy Rubs maxes it out with FX, stabs, reverb and Latin percussion trills. But it's the title track that takes the gold, a driving 4/4 houser with Jersey-style organs to die for and a vocal sample from Junior Vasquez's 'Get Your Hands Off My Man' (and Opal Funk Band's 'Ain't No Way' before that).

Review: Three slices of retro-tastic disco action on this latest from Rare Wiri regular Bodie Lee. It's a brave producer who takes on 'Le Freak' but the Boise, Idaho native pulls it off on 'C'Mon Down To 54': the jury's out as to whether it's a re-edit or just a very faithful homage but either way, it'll get 'em shimmying for sure! Elsewhere, 'Ring A Bell' draws on an unidentified boogie-era cut with a fine funk bassline, while the more uptempo 'Sunset' reworks Michael Jackson's 'Sunset Driver', a cut demo'd for 'Off The Wall' and reworked during the 'Thriller' sessions but only released in 2004.

Review: No need to start invoking the Trades Descriptions Act here: 'Slow Disco' is what it says on the box, and slow disco is exactly what you'll find inside. Guitarist and producer Klaus Wienerroither has several long-players as Tunesmith under his belt already, dating back to 2006 and ranging in style from indie-rock to squelchy broken beat and electronic pop, but this album adopts a far more mirrorball-oriented aesthetic, and as such will appeal to fans of artists such as The Phenomenal Handclap Band or Escort. For this writer, it's the tracks that feature Mara Miletic's vocals that stand out - particularly recent single 'Disco Classic' and the irrestistibly catchy 'Feels Good'.

Review: We like to imagine Rayko rocking down the street in his sun-drenched Spanish town, blasting out tactile '80s boogie, soul and disco from an over-sized ghetto blaster slung over his shoulder. If this scene were real, then he may well be playing "Disco Thunder", the tidy re-edit that opens his latest three-track salvo. It's a fine slice of 80s disco-boogie goodness rich unclipped guitars, P-funk bass, sparkling synths, electro beats and bold female vocal snippets. If he were feeling particularly bold, he may also press play on "Touch Down", a driving disco-funk revision full of weighty punk-funk bass, crunchy Clavinet lines, spacey synths and dewy-eyed vocal snippets. Should be want to stop and do a bit of break-dancing, dreamy and delay-laden closing cut "Hypnotic" would do the trick.

Review: Rare Wiri founder Rayko serves up what is, if we're counting correctly, his fourth studio album. As such, you should have a pretty good idea what to expect by now; if not, perhaps the fact that two of those previous albums came out on Nang might give you a clue! Glossy, shimmering, synth-led nu-disco with a distinctly 80s feel is the order of the day, generally, with 'Fais Pas Amour' bringing the soulful vibes and 'Telegraph' having perhaps the most instant pop appeal, while closer 'Nightloving' stands out from the pack thanks to its slightly more down n' dirty funk edge.

Love Is Sweet - (6:14) 114 BPM
Review: Known first and foremost as a deep house producer, the UK's Pete Le Freq takes a tour of more disco-oriented pastures on this three-tracker for Rayko's Rare Wiri label. The tracks are essentially re-edits, but there's no five-minute 'loop it up and chuck a 4/4 kick under it' shoddiness here, and you could equally see them as being fresh tracks that are merely 'inspired by' vintage cuts. 'Believe In You' is based on Patti Jo's 'Make Me Believe In You' from 1973, N-Joi's 1991 rave classic 'Anthem' (1991) gets disco'd up on 'Anthemic' and 'Love Is Sweet' sees Anita Baker's 1986 soul gem 'Sweet Love' given a nu-disco makeover.
