Review: Felipe Gordon may be a confirmed label-hopper - in the last 12 months alone he's appeared on Clone Royal Oak, Toucan Sounds and Shall Not Fade - but he's also Mr Consistency. Predictably, this return to New York's Razor N Tape imprint is full to bursting with tried-and-tested dancefloor treats. Gordon is at his expressive, musically expansive best on 'Flutes of Gold', where vibraphone and synth solos stretch out over a lolloping deep house beat and warming electric piano chords, while 'Right Beside Me' is an infectious, low-slung, sample-heavy jazz-house delight. To round off the EP, Gordon smothers a luscious deep house groove with extended organ solos ('Homage to Bossa'), before taking us deep into space via the wild TB-303 motifs, pots-and-pans beats and shimmering chords of 'Acid Party at Santa Barbara'.

Review: What we have here is the first-ever release from Lovetempo, a new solo project from Mattie Safer, who's best known as the bassist for NYC punk-funk outfit The Rapture, as well as his slo-mo stylings under the Poolside moniker. On this evidence, Lovetempo will slot in neatly between the two: less strident and attitude-y than the former but more dancefloor-oriented than the latter. Most of the EP's five original cuts sit somewhere between Balearica, indie soul and melancholy electronic pop, but it's Nick Catchdubs' stripped n' strutty, 80s-flavoured remix of 'Turnaround' that stands out to these ears.

This release offers a unique fusion of Balearic grooves, left-field funk, and up-tempo backbeats that showcase the distinct US sound. Review: Midnight Magic brings some hot and love-filled vibes to Razor-N-Tape's new EP. Kicking things off is a sensational remix by Perel of their hit track 'I Found Love,' which is a powerful and emotional disco-house anthem that will have you reaching for the sky with a rush of energy. The original version of the track is a bit more subdued but still exudes an infectious party spirit. Next up, Dimitri From Paris & DJ Rocca offer their cosmic touch with a subtle but groovy Erodiscotique remix. Finally, Sophie Lloyd takes the reins with her glossy synth work on her remix, adding her own spin to this already sensational release. Get ready to experience a musical journey filled with passion, energy, and pure disco magic!

Review: Last heard collaborating with Horse Meat Disco on Glitterbox (2021's 'Sanctuary'), New York collective Phenomenal Handclap Band have decided to showcase their new material on a growing NYC institution: Aaron Dae and J Kriv's popular Razor N Tape imprint. They're in fine form on title track 'Burning Bridges', a squelchy, lyrically bittersweet chunk of disco-boogie revivalism that's as stylish and classy as they come. Norwegian master Prins Thomas provides a pleasingly extended, Clavinet-heavy dancefloor tweak for those that want bolder disco thrills, before the band offers up the psychedelic and Balearic experimentation of 'It Was The Summer'. That, too, comes backed by a fine remix: the squelchy, mind-mangling, TB-303 driven acid thrills of the Each Other mix.

Cor.Ece & Danny Kane - "What's The Word" (Bad Colours remix) - (3:50) 121 BPM
Review: Sometime Honey Dijon collaborator Cor.Ece impressed us back in the summer with the 'Dance To Keep From Crying EP'. This speedy sequel sports a mixture of extended takes of tracks from that set, and remixes of others. The extended take on the title track, made in cahoots with Razor N Tape co-founder J Kriv, is simply gorgeous: a fine mix of proto-house, boogie and nu-disco sounds topped off with a genuinely soulful lead vocal. Acid-flecked, piano-sporting soulful deep house cut 'What's The Word' (with Danny Kane) is tastefully extended before Bad Colours delivers a sub-heavy, Todd Edwards-inspired revision. Dave Giles II hook-up 'Possibly Impossible', a squelchy bass-propelled nu-disco-meets-house number, is not only extended by also remixed by Crackazat, who gives it a jazzy, Rhodes-laden, Afro-tinged deep house flavour.

Review: Two tracks in a total of five mixes make up this EP from Kokoro Disco-San, AKA the Barcelona-based trio of Lalo Lopez, Miguelito Superstar and Thompson. In its Original form, 'Sunshine' is an unsurprisingly summery and mellow nu-disco joint that, as we move on up through the Beach Bum Edit and SPF76 Mix rubs from label boss JKriv, gets progressively more electronic, the former adding an 80s squelch b-line and the latter throwing in some fine stabs, while 'Jungle Deep' is a slice of moody tropical disco served with or without a spoken female vocal. I'd go 'with' if I were you...

Review: Razor 'N' Tape Reserve's latest release is a label debut from Nenor, an Israeli producer previously best known for being one half of Mahogani Music-signed duo Rabo & Snob. He begins by offering up two cuts featuring vocalist Jenny Penkin: the attractive nu-disco/deep house fusion of 'How Can I Be Free' and the giddy nostalgic rush of revivalist number 'Do You Remember', which joins the dots between rushing piano house and late '80s Larry Heard productions. Red Axes provide a fantastic rework of the latter cut, retaining some of the dreamier and more life-affirming elements while also giving it their usual chunky grooves and psychedelic tinge. Elsewhere, 'Gonna Take My Time' is a locked-in late night delight full of sharp stabs, and 'Work That' is a restless, energy-packed late-night delight.

Review: Here's an EP that's been on fairly constant rotation since landing in this reviewer's inbox on Monday morning - and if your tastes lean towards the deepest and spaciest of house grooves, your experience of it may be very similar! 'Transmission' will provide the perfect accompaniment to those late-night, sofa-bound excursions into inner space, while 'Sable Sun' has a mellower vibe and 'Red Light' takes us into the 4am deep jackin' zone. The real killer, though, is 'Tremors', which rocks the kind of bassline (so sumptuous and warm you could swim in it) not often heard since all those classic Italian dub house records on Irma and Antima 30 years ago. Absolutely outstanding.

Review: Fresh from hitting the headlines thanks to a couple of killer collaborations with Honey Dijon, vocalist and songwriter Cor.Ece pitches up on Razor N Tape for the very first time. 'Possibly Impossible' was produced by label co-founder JKriv and sees Cor.Ece deliver layered, superbly soulful vocals over a backing track rich in squelchy, spacey synth-bass, twinkling electronic motifs and beats that sit somewhere between futurist deep house and the classier end of nu-disco. Musical polymath Crackazat takes the track to whole new heights on his accompanying remix, which combines live jazz and jazz-funk instrumentation with tougher, more locked-in house beats and a weightier bassline.

Review: Man-of-the-moment Felipe Gordon was little more than a Columbian producer with promise when he first appeared on Razor N Tape Reserve back in 2019. Since then, he's chalked up impressive, jazz-funk influenced deep house releases for all manner of high-profile labels including Heist, Local Talk and Shall Not Fade. This belated return to Razor N Tape is great, too. Opener 'Strings of the Afterline' is pleasingly hazy and dreamy whilst boasting Gordon's usual synth-heavy squelch, while 'The Fall of a Withered Empire' is a rare vocal number with a deep jazz-house feel. Elsewhere, 'Classico' is a bouncy, classic-sounding deep house bounce-along rich in sparkling synth riffs, while 'Julia Y Lewis' is a more languid and laidback chunk of jazz-sampling, funk-fuelled deep house haziness.

Review: With this entertaining EP, former Outplay contributor Clive From Accounts becomes the latest producer to contribute to Razor N Tape's excellent Reserve series of original productions. He's delivered a sublime EP all told, with opener 'Tell Me' providing a near perfect blend of driving disco-house, saucer-eyed deep house and foreboding, warehouse-ready motifs. He opts for a breezier, jazzier and more colourful deep house sound on bona-fide ear-pleaser 'Without Your Love', dives into deeper waters via the dusty deep house/jazz-funk fusion of 'Strictly Business' and looks skywards on spacey closing cut 'Yukon', a thoroughly emotive and intergalactic breakbeat roller.

Review: The latest artist to join Razor N Tape's original production-focused Reserve imprint is UC Beatz, a storied deep house producer whose bulging discography contains all manner of warming, club-ready treats. There's plenty of subtle variety to be found on the Midnight Swing EP, with the Brussels-born artist flitting between hazy, organ-sporting late-night chunkiness (the classic-sounding title track, which makes use of some vintage vocal snippets), airy colourfulness (the ultra-positive electronic melodies, lo-fi machine drums and tactile chords of 'Blue Ciel', and revivalist, mid-90s New Jersey garage/New York deep house fusion ('Broken Idyll'). Label regular Cody Currie provides the sole remix: a gorgeously airy, warm and sun-kissed revision of 'Blue Ciel' that's simply sublime.

Review: For their latest trick, Razor-N-Tape Reserve has decided to breathe new life into 'Agua', one of the standout cuts from Brazilian band Baianasystem's chronically overlooked 2018 album O Futura Nao Demora. Freerange main man Jimpster delivers two wonderfully breezy and life affirming reworks: a fully-formed remix that wraps Antonio Carlos' vocal and splashes of the original's samba-soaked instrumentation (jazz guitars, warming horns, vintage synth sounds and so on) around a tactile deep house groove, and a deeper, dreamier and especially groovy Dub. After that Diego Strausz and JKriv take over, first re-framing the track as an extra-percussive chuck of acid-speckled nu-disco (their remix), before brilliantly stripping back the cut on their disco instrumental style Dub mix.

Adjinu - (6:13) 54 BPM
Review: They might hail from Israel, but much of Rabo & Snob's music is not influenced by Middle Eastern musical culture, but rather the rhythms, vocals and instrumentation of the African continent. The pair continue this approach on their first Razor 'N' Tape outing, with opener 'Yom Yom' cannily combining squelchy synth bass, fizzing electronics and slick Afro-synth drums with Ghanaian vocals and distinctively West African melodic phrasing. Later in the EP you'll also find a more hypnotic, percussion-rich Dub Mix of the same track that's also well worth checking. Elsewhere, 'Have You Seen My Lady' is darker and sleazier, with low-slung bass, creepy chords and warehouse-ready stabs, while the similarly weighty and locked-in 'Adjinu' makes great use of Acid Arab style electronics and a very 'LFO'-esque analogue bassline.

Review: Almost three years after it first appeared on wax, Juan Maclean's Razor 'N' Tape Reserve debut has finally landed on digital download. It's an excellent collection of club-focused, often sample-heavy cuts, no doubt drawn from his personal stash of cuts created for his DJ sets. There's plenty to set the pulse racing from start to finish. Check first the percussive pump of peak-time disco loop-jam 'Fine Time', before getting your ears around the classic boogie-meets-NYC house fusion of 'Don't Stop For Nothing', which offers sly nods towards a number of classic cuts including Toney Lee's 'Reach Up'. Elsewhere, 'Everybody Clap' is a dustier, looser and hazier deep house excursion, while 'Panic In Fort Greene Park' sees MacLean smother a trippy and hypnotic groove in spacey motifs and acid-style electronics.

Review: The latest producer to pop up on Razor 'N' Tape's Reserve sub-label is Detroiter Pontchartrain, whose previous outings on Lovedancing, Whiskey Disco, Kolour Ltd and Soul Clap Records were all mighty impressive. There's much to enjoy here, too, as he swaps tooled-up re-edits for colourful original productions. Check first 'I-80', where bubbly and emotive melodies cluster around a tactile house groove and deliciously dreamy chords, before wrapping your ears around closing cut 'Love & Madness', an off-kilter late night number rich in undulating synth-bass, drifting electric piano chords, atmospheric vocal samples and spacey synthesizer flourishes. This comes accompanied by two reworks: a jazzy, sensual and squelchy Demuja Remix that should get deep house heads in a spin, and the producer's own sunrise-ready Friends & Lovers Dub.

Review: There aren't many producers working on the soulful and jazzy end of the dance music spectrum with quite as a strong a discography as Alexander Lay-Far. Whatever label he's operating on, the Russian producer always delivers the goods. He's done it again here on his first Razor 'N' Tape Reserve outing. Over the course of four must-check tracks, he confidently bounces between jazz-funk-flavoured broken beat/deep house fusion ('Searching For Your Love', with its' ace slap-bass and starry keys); deep and jazzy breaks (the head-nodding, toe-tapping 'Trinity'), warehouse-ready late night hedonism ('What It Is', with its Yorkshire bleeps, raw analogue bass, bouncy beats and soulful vocal samples) and bluesy, sample-heavy jazz-house ('You Can't Stop The Profit'). Review: Man-of-the-moment Felipe Gordon returns to the Razor 'N' Tape camp with a fresh selection of sample-heavy house cuts following a collaborative re-edit outing on the imprint alongside pal Vagabundo Club Social in 2019. He hits the ground running with blissful and tactile opener 'Those Quiet Eyes of Yours', where effortlessly jazzy and laidback guitar licks and woozy synth sounds ride a squeezable TB-303 bassline and dusty deep house drums. The acid bass remains on the more boisterous and bustling 'There's a Part of Me That's Always True', while 'Now That You Caught My Heart This Evening' makes great use of jazzy electric piano flourishes, sampled orchestration and eyes-closed, samba style vocal snippets. More warming, glassy-eyed fun can be found on toasty deep house closing cut 'That Night at El Bukowski', where twinkling motifs, jazz-funk and bubbly electronics catch the ear.

Review: Razor 'N' Tape's first missive of 2021 is a confident and ear-catching affair from Brazilian musician/producer Diogo Strausz, who previously released on the Brooklyn-based imprint as one half of Balako. We're particularly enjoying opener 'Emancipacao', a warming and gently breezy, carnival-ready affair that makes great use of both an infectious, bouncy rhythm and the kind of mazy synthesizer motifs that were once the preserve of Brazilian jazz-funk legends Azymuth. The influence of Azymuth can also be heard on squelchy, spacey and piano-rich virtual B-side '50 Anos Em 5', which is every bit as colourful and rhythmically addictive as its' predecessor.

Make Love - (6:27) 122 BPM
Magic City - (5:46) 115 BPM
Review: On the releases he's offered up to date, Cody Currie has barely put a foot wrong, delivering a swathe of top-notch tracks that effortlessly join the dots between dusty, soul-flecked U.S deep house and hip-hop style sample-based beat jams. This time round he's on a more disco and boogie-centric tip, though his trademark production style remains. We get the rolling, sun-kissed warmth and gentle filter tweaks of wide-eyed disco house shuffler "Movin' Smoke", the slack-tuned jazz snares, swirling chords and bubbly synth samples of "Infinity I & II" and the string-drenched orchestral disco-house glee of "Magic City". Our pick of a very strong bunch is "Make Love", where Currie's ability to manipulate samples within a bumping deep house framework once again comes to the fore.

Review: Although famed for delivering killer cuts of vintage disco and boogie jams, Razor-N-Tape has released plenty of life-affirming house jams, too. As if to prove the point, JKriv and Aaron Dae's Brooklyn-based imprint has decided to release a second selection of back catalogue house highlights. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the bluesy bounce of JKriv and Free Magic's "Eunice" and the classic deep house warmth of Jimpster's killer remix of Mr V's "Something Wit Jazz", to the fizzing synth riffs and life-affirming percussive shuffle of "Stretchin" by Luvless and the groovy, jammed-out musical headiness of Lay-Far's tidy remix of "Just One" by Body Music. Also worth plenty of peak-time plays is Chrissy's chunky revision of Ragtyme's rap-laced 1987 Chicago jam "Fix It Man".

Luvless - "Stretchin'" - (6:25) 122 BPM Hot
Review: From Germany with love: dynamic duo M.Ono and Luvless return to RNT with five more funk odysseys. M.One takes the lead; "Just Like Magic" is all about the big string swings and urgent soulful snippets while "Eins A Legge" jitters to a more persistent filtered groove. Deeper into the trip Luvless sends us into untold euphoric states on "Rising Youth", he takes us deep down the sleazy beat rabbit hole on "File Save As" and wraps up the package with the vibrant elastic synth strikes on "Stretchin'". What a way to kick off 2018.

JKriv - "Queen's Beats" - (4:31) 110 BPM
Review: The kind of names and quality of releases that Brooklyn's Razor N Tape has supported puts them in the disco premier league. Here they enlist Jkriv to provide us with dancing fodder that isn't throwaway stuff. First is his rework of "Bukom Mashie" by Oscar Sulley & The Uhuru Dance Band. The latter, his "King Mashie edit", is a raucous slice of bassy and brassy percussive Afrobeat. Elsewhere an O'Jays classic gets stretched out into eight minutes of slow bump bliss on "The Queen On Her Throne" and resurfaces in a deliciously spare dub called "The Queens Beats". Top notch!

Review: The Razor 'N' Tape crew is getting progressively bold when it comes to picking their releases. Having recently tasted success with a tasty Kraak & Smaak remix package, they've decided to commission new remixes of a genuine NYC house classic: Mr V's 2005 jam "Somethin' Wit Jazz". British deep house star Jimpster steps up first, providing both a flowing, musically expansive Remix - blessed with flowing synth-work, hustling percussion and, of course, Mr V's urgent vocal - and a darker, wonkier Dub full of delay-laden drum hits. The Party Herbs expertly channel the spirit of hip-house and boogie on their snappy, synth bass-heavy reworks, while Session Victim steals the show with a fluid, flowing version full of swinging jazz breaks and jammed-out instrumentation.

Back In The Day EP

Back In The Day (Daniel Leseman remix) - (6:08) 120 BPM
Last Night - (6:07) 120 BPM
Review: Back In The Day marks the second appearance from Local Talk regulars Dirtytwo on J Kriv and Aaron Dae's Razor 'N' Tape imprint. Like their last outing, Back In The Day sees them offering up an impressive blend of bumpin' house and filter-heavy re-edits with a heavy emphasis on party starting. While the murky, basement-bothering title track, and Daniel Leeseman's baggier, disco-house rework, are impressive, it's the EP's other two tracks that are really floating our boat. Check, in particular, the string-laden, bass-heavy sleaze of "Last Night", which boasts a spine-tingling breakdown and some decidedly sweaty female vocals. That said, the slower "Estrelar" - a chopped-up, looped, filter-fiddling rework of the Marcos Valle track of the same name - is also rather fine.

Review: Back in the 80s, re-edit heroes Razormaid literally cut and spliced tapes of popular tunes into new shapes and sounds. Thirty years on and although the formats have changed the philosophy remains the same. Aaron Dae and JKriv's label Razor 'N' Tape specialises in chopped up disco but here they looked to house instead. There are ten wondrous jams on this album, our favourites including the smooth Balearic work out "Free" (Loverbirds' clever Donald Fagen rework), the skippy afterhours garage of "Music Overflow" and the cool and deep "Dynamics".

Beatin' Tha Breaks
Beatin' Tha Breaks (Fouk remix) - (5:21) 115 BPM Hot
Beatin' Tha Breaks (Freddie Joachim remix) - (4:08) 91 BPM
Review: Brooklyn label Razor-N-Tape get in on the Record Store Day action with this special edition of Beatin Tha Breaks from Nashville-based Magic In Threes. It's the remixes that come first, with Dutch artist Fouk going into similar house territory to Kenny Dope with plenty of live instrumental touches blessing the bristling percussion. It's a totally different vibe on the Freddie Joachem remix, with the Californian opting for some midtempo funk breaks that stay closer to the sound of Magic In Threes' original version. This closes out the RSD release on the B-side and is an easy-breezy affair dripping with soulful guitars and harmonies.

Review: Having first dropped on fluorescent yellow vinyl back in November, Dirtytwo's baggy, string-laden Razor 'N' Tape debut, "The Remedy", finally makes it to digital download. The original - a tactile US garage-influenced deep house take on Diana Ross's disco classic "Love Hangover" - is joined by a quartet of similarly classic-sounding remixes. DirtyTwo throw in a few more original disco elements on their TwoDirty Remix (which, incidentally, also comes in instrumental form), Caserta drops some piano house riffs and booming garage bass on his rework, while Grey Area go all Balearic on their deliciously saucer-eyed version. Finally, Duu Ben sprints back towards the disco on his chunky, percussive interpretation.

Review: When this split EP from rising talents Luvless and Martin Hayes first dropped on rose-red wax last autumn, it picked up support from a wide range of DJs (Maxxi Soundsystem, Daz-I-Kue, OOFT and Doc Martin included). It's easy to see why. Luvless's shuffling, sample-heavy blends of dewy-eyed deep house and sugary disco fit into a range of sets, while the familiar samples ("Just the Two of Us" gets filtered to oblivion on the chugging "Castles in the Sky") guarantees a flicker of recognition from difficult dancefloors. The real stand-out moment, though, comes from Martin Hayes, whose delicious "Bobby's Theme" gets just the right balance between disco-funk reverence and sinewy, deep house sensuality.

Where You Belong - (5:54) Hot
Review: A belated but welcome return for Brooklyn's Razor 'N' Tape crew. This time round, though, they're not cutting-up classic boogie tunes in a Tiger & Woods-ish disco-house style. Instead, they offer up three woozy, all-enveloping deep house cuts from The Groovers. "Here's To You Mr Robinson" laces a classic jazz vocal over a smooth-as-silk deep house groove, while "Make Me Feel" turns a delicious jazz-funk jam into a deep, soulful treat - all twinkling Rhodes, edible horns and sweeping strings. "Where You Belong", on the other hand, goes further into slow dance territory, lacing fluid funk guitars, sensual pianos and a delightful vocal over a deep rare funk groove.
