Review: Oli Lazarus's Reel People Music drop the first volume in a new compilation series that will see the keys to the label's vaults handed over to a number of different remixers, with the intention of breathing new live into tracks that in some cases are nearly 20 years old. The man in the hot seat for this first installment is broken beat originator and Bugz co-founder Kaidi Tatham, who takes on tracks from/featuring the likes of Mica Paris, Atjazz, Sean Escoffery,Sebb Junior, Daz-I-Kue and of course Reel People themselves. Given the source material, it's no surprise that "smooth and soulful" is the mood du jour, generally: the beats never get TOO broken and self-indulgent jazzbo flourishes are kept to a minimum. File under 'baby-making music'.

This year's edition is a particularly potent collection, with 20 tried-and-tested tracks to devour. Highlights are naturally plentiful, from the tech-tinged deep house soulfulness of Mark Francis's remix of Opolopo and Angela Johnson's 'Stay This Way', and Glenn Underground's wonderfully musically expansive revision of Harold Matthews Jr and Sean McCabe's 'This Place', to the sunset-ready wonder of Matthew Brandy's 'Wish' (featuring an impeccable vocal performance by Josh Milan) and the soulful deep house brilliance of Atjazz and Shea Soul's inspired 'Home'.

Review: Although his music has always been blessed with an inherent soulfulness, it's only in recent years that Martin Iveson AKA Atjazz has moved more enthusiastically towards expressively soulful and vocal house. 'Home', a collaboration with effortlessly soulful vocalist Shea Soul, may well be his strongest soulful deep house outing yet. The vocal mix, which is available in extended and edit variations, is seriously seductive, with simmering strings, twinkling electric piano motifs and Shea Soul's superb lead vocal rising above a tactile deep house groove. The quality of Iveson's drum programming, music and arrangements naturally comes to the fore on the accompanying instrumental take.

Review: The mighty Opolopo gets his mitts on 'Purple Funk', a classic cut from Paris Toon's Mothers Favourite Child project that first surfaced in 2017. The version remixed by Opolopo is a freshly updated version, with Saeada Wright replacing original singer CeCe Peniston in the vocal booth. Opolopo's EP-opening main remix is a genuinely sun-soaked summer delight, where Wright's soulful lead vocal, mazy Fender Rhodes riffs, crisp guitar licks and spacey synth doodles ride a squelchy P-funk bassline and swinging, loose-limbed drums. It comes accompanied by a full-length instrumental take, in which you can bathe your ears in Opolopo's detailed musical arrangement, and a useful radio edit.
