Xerox - (5:41) 135 BPM
Review: The latest instalment on Rekids is a barnstorming affair from UK act KUSP. "Circulus" is a peak-time banger, centred on a jacking ghetto techno rhythm and the kind of wild analogue builds that Luke Slater deployed on his evergreen remix of Joey Beltram's "Forklift". "Fictus" is just as forceful, with KUSP dropping razor-sharp hi-hats and wild rave stabs over pounding kicks. The title track sees the intensity taken down a few notches; led by a series of thunderclaps and dramatic drops and builds, it's as effective as the previous tracks. "Troubadour" sees KUSP keep the pressure up, with a dubbed out backing providing the basis for chopped-up vocal samples.

Review: Alan Fitzpatrick is a busy man, and Immortal Daydream follows a flurry of releases on Drumcode, Hotflush and most recently, Rekids itself. This four-tracker sees the UK producer do what he's best at and delivers impactful club techno. "Everlasting" is shot through with dramatic stabs and underpinned by steely thunder claps, making for a powerful dance floor track. "Titan" also sees Fitzpatrick deploy musical elements - on this occasion it's a repetitive organ riff over a combination of relentless kicks and driving hi-hats - while "Droid Disco" marks a departure in style, with Fitzpatrick going deeper to deliver a seductive cacophony of tonal frequencies over a dubbed out groove."The Underdog" presents a further surprise, as the We Are The Brave boss deploys rich chords and crashing snares to deliver his own take on Detroit techno.

I Think I Love You (Reboot Remix) (reboot remix) - (9:52) 126 BPM
Review: After a hot string of releases this year on labels such as Ovum, CR2 and Azuli, one of Britain's best talents Spencer Parker is back with fresh material for Rekids. "I Think I Love You" reeks of Spencer's years of experience as it delves immediately into first class territory. Tightly produced, the off beat claps, closed hats and bass current are subtle, charismatic and addictive. Up next, Reboot takes the deep chugging record up a notch or two and into the tech house realm. Tinny cow bells and percussive rhythms are added with breezy aplomb by the German.

Dope Beat (original mix) - (9:12) 123 BPM Hot
Tunnel Vision - (12:53) 125 BPM
Review: Matt Edwards's label makes another smart signing with this release from Nikos Galatsopoulos. The same kind of driving throb that Edwards made his name with as Radioslave is audible here on "Dope Beat" - with beefy drums and a simple but effective filter keeping the arrangement dynamic and dancefloor friendly. A similarly utilitarian approach is evident on "Tunnel Vision", but in that instance the sounds are more techno-focused and the repetition centres on a deep chord build that breaks down and restarts. However, the most memorable moments here are "Hi Fly" and the title track. Underscored by infectiously catchy, summery disco filters, the former will garner all the radio play while the latter's Ian Pooley-like groove will rule in techno and house clubs alike.

Review: Mark Broom returns to Rekids with a release that's tailor made for dance floor use. Mutated contains eight tracks, with each one clocking in around the three-minute mark. Designed specifically for DJs to get busy with in the mix, these pieces range in style from the high-paced, Rob Hood-style minimalism of "Changing" and "Form" to tracks like "Marker" and "Stranded", whose frenetic rhythms and building chords have echoes of classic Technasia. There are some deeper tracks too, with the chord-heavy "Mutate" standing out, but no matter which direction he pushes in, this release captures the veteran producer in peak-time mode.

Review: Having kept 2020 clear for the release of a debut album on REKIDS - Converge Part 1 - Jon Hester states his territory on the label in 2021 with its counterpart - Converge Part 2! The Chicago-born, Berlin-based transplant has had a good run in recent years following a succession of releases with the likes of Deeply Rooted, Transmat and Dystopian, with this LP adding another gold star to the techno producer's vintage yet futuristic sound. Heavily modelled on faster Detroit-styled techno with a touch of Chicago soul (best heard through the LP's melodies and synthwork in tracks like "Instant", "Contact" and "Wonder"), get your dubbier and percussive sessions from "Silver" to the broken beat drums in "Shadows" and minimal warehouse vibes of "Artificial Intelligence". Jon Hester is: Converged.

Don't Look In The Freezer - (6:40) 118 BPM
Review: A Sagittariun has made it his mission to release distinctive dance music, and he continues that journey with Strange Brew. Opening track "The Mind Blanks At The Glare" is a wonderfully woozy break beat track, smothered in warbling acid and featuring evocative keys. "Don't Look In The Freezer" sees the UK producer venturing once again down an unexplored path - rave samples and dubbed out chords are combined with trippy 303s to create a mesmerising track. Rounding off this release is the aptly named "Cosmic Trigger": more dance floor-focused than the other tracks, its tingling melodies and growling bass mark it out as another idiosyncratic A Sagittariun jam.

Review: Spencer Parker delivers his most distinctive and accessible release to date. The title track draws on 80s influences, including a pulsating Italo bass and electric piano keys, making for a dance floor groove that eminently hummable. Parker continues to draw inspiration from that decade on "Radio Waves (After Dark)"; featuring a repetitive vocal sample and snappy drums, this lean, linear affair also benefits from a throbbing bass. Meanwhile, on "The Work Out", Parker delivers a stripped back rhythm that provides the basis for a gloomy synth line that recalls New Order at their most pensive. Reflected through Parker's prism, it makes for a fresh approach to techno.

Review: REKIDS give "Aus" from Nina Kraviz's heralded self titled album its own release. Remixes come from The Rhythm Odyssey, DJ Q and Radio Slave as Matthew E. "Aus" is as low-slung and sultry as it is loose and minimal; King Aus preaching all things house music and freedom in tune to church-like Rhodes. DJ Qu focuses on looping the key elements of NK's original, creating a deep and hypnotic mantra while The Rhythm Odyssey brings the p-funk with a walking bassline in his "Warehouse Tape edit", similar to Mike Dunn's "Phreaky MF". Radio Slave works the bassline in his mix also, but substitutes The Rhythm Odyssey's disco groove for some up beat ghetto-funk, while adding flashing camera samples and random snippets of the warning bleeps a car makes when keys are left in the ignition.

Review: Recorded by DAP aka Daniel Poli, Andrea Mazzini and Philippos Nikiforakis back in 2004, Brush Your Lips has aged well. Featuring house head Lance De Sardi on vocals, it harks back to a time before minimal and fidget went their separate ways. It has a tracky, relentless feeling, imbued with the rawness of Chicago, the precision of digital production and best of all, De Sardi's risque vocals. "Little Deeper" follows a similar trajectory, albeit with a vocal snippet and a more rolling groove, while "Manipulation" is harder and more upfront, its powerful bottom end propelling snares to their inevitable, irresistible climaxes. The Jamaican vocal-sampling "If you Were Liquid" recalls the tripped out tech-house of Grant Dell and Terry Francis.

On - (10:58) 125 BPM Hot
1977 - (9:42) 125 BPM
Played by: Radio Slave
Review: Lee Van Dowski takes up where Luciano left off with Father and Fourges et Sabres. "On" is a rambling organic groove, supported by loose, at times almost ramshackle drums which support melancholic sax playing and then later what could be Middle Eastern pipes. The whole thing threatens to fall apart at every bar, but Van Dowski keeps it together through the use of an effective filter. Despite this, "On" constantly surprises, and by turns reveals mad guitar strumming, rambunctious jazz squalls and even half-heard chanting. "1977" is not as off the wall and is based on a tighter drummy groove, but it too has an adventurous feel thanks to its skittish piano lines and bluesy guitar riffs.

Review: Spencer Parker is one of the unsung heroes of UK house music, but on this occasion, he hands over the controls to French talent. Rex resident Molly is behind the edit of "The Improvised Minotaur" and she does a fine job, teasing out the flowing piano line to the backdrop of a loose, rolling groove and eerie synth sounds. Fellow countryman DJulz's take on "Romantic" is more direct and less ethereal; the dense drums shuffle in a similar style to Martyn's recent output and are propelled forward with hissing percussion, while the organ riff at its heart lends it a somewhat menacing edge.

Review: Monty Luke's Nightdubbing project on Rekids was designed to showcase the Black Catalogue boss's deep love of dub-infused house and techno. This 13-track album combines previously unheard cuts with nine tracks previously showcased across a pair of EPs of the same name. It's a fantastic set all told, with highlights including the smacked-out electro-dub headiness of opener '40 Acres and a Terrabyte', the extra-percussive deep dub-house hypnotism of 'Bob Molly', the after-hours friendly minimalism of 'Star Storms', the Detroit-goes-dub techno pulse of 'New World/Old Future', the classic dub techno warmth of 'Dark Paradise', and the dub-wise deep house dreaminess of 'Avantgarde Dancehall'. Throw in a handful of tidy ambient and digital dub tracks, and you have a genuinely superb long-player.

Only (Ryan Elliot remix) - (6:36) 127 BPM
Review: There are countless labels and acts flirting with the old school house sound - but is Rekids one of the few genuine flagbearers for classic Chicago dance music? On the evidence of Only, the answer is a resounding yes. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Gala does not worship at the altar of Larry Heard and Adonis, but in the church of Relief. The title track's slamming, relentless rhythm, metal-plated drums and insistent stabs are interspersed with a chopped up vocal sample that recalls Cajmere at his most deranged. Ryan Elliot does a fine job with his remix, with lithe hats skimming their way over deep chord sequences, but it's all about the original version.

Review: This newie from Berlin-based production combo Liviu Groza and Kennedy Smith was recently referred to online as "DJ tool house". It's an odd but kinda apt description. It's in many ways typical of the style that Rekids boss Matt "Radio Slave" Edwards has made his own - druggy, tracky, intoxicating and bristling with strange noises, dubbed-out pianos and razor-sharp snares. It sounds like it was tailor-made for after-parties and afternoon-after-parties. Amir Alexander remixes, delivering a deeper, drifting take full of bubbly bass, hissing cymbals and crunchy analogue percussion. It's a quality alternative to the out-there original.

Review: Matt Edwards' label has such strong ties to Berlin, but this release's title doesn't imply that Rekids is opposed to German electronic music. The reality is that it refers to that older meaning of 'versus', the 'versioning' that fuelled dub sound systms. Certainly Berghain residents Marcel Dettmann and Ben Klock put their stamp on Rekids tracks. In Dettmann's case it's ticking percussion and a nagging acid line that lends an air of menace to Mr G's "U Askin?", while for Klock, his "Timepiece" reshape of Deepchild vs Jamie Anderson's "The Clock" provides an opportunity to layer metallic rhythms on top of each other. Roman Fluegel's tranced out version of Radioslave's "My Bleep", which was one of Rekids first releases, completes the package.

Review: For this latest Mr Jones EP by Nina Kraviz, she withdraws any sentiments of ghetto house heard on last year's debut album and turns in something house and techno inspired for Rekids. Her sultry, accented vocals still play a large role in her music however, best heard in the dark house of "Desire", the first track of this double EP. "Mr Jones" begins much the same was as "Desire", but when the beat does drop, it's not as tough, but twice as haunting - complementing the EPs cover art. Kraviz teams up with Luke Hess for the Detroit techno drum track that is "Remember", while "Black White" offers the some respite from the previous productions gloominess with something more festive and tropical. From here Kraviz provides some classic, minimal, and percussive deep house in "So Wrong", which leads perfectly into the club drumming of "Sheer". A superb follow up by Kraviz.

Mr G's "Get on Down" is a typical Colin McBean jam, with rave whistles, sad pads and a 'rock your body' sample unfolding over a driving rhythm, while Radio Slave's 'Panorama Garage' take on Matt O'Brien's "Serotone" is a ride into relentless tracky techno. There is another side to Rekids though and this is audible on Toby Tobias' shimmering disco and the tripped out house of Rhythm Odyssey's "Raw". However, neither come close to matching the interplay between oppressive bass licks and chiming bells on David Parr and the late Kenny Hawkes' "Gemini".

Review: Following on from the recent UK and Germany EPs, this expansive collection further sheds light on Rekids' wide-ranging approach. There's Radio Slave's own 'Shaking The Tree' remix of Mr G's "Makes No Sense", which draws on the bongo-heavy house of US producers like Halo & Hipp-E, replete with birdsong and Rastafarian stream of consciousness toasting. In contrast, the raw, analogue stomp of Colin McBean's "Get on Down" sounds like Richie Hawtin's Circuit Breaker doing house, while Wink delivers an insane, acid-tweaked take on Radioslave's "Screaming Hands". The compilation also features lesser-known nuggets like Jjak Hogan's "Optifreeze", where tripped out synths combine with a low-slung rhythm, and the muffled vocals and dreamy synths of Amir Alexander's take on Liviu Groza & Kennedy Smith's "Could Be Anybody".

Review: Judging by the title of this release, it sounds like Matt Edwards' label has developed a bunker mentality. The reality however is that Rekids hunts high and low for release material, evidenced by the geographical diversity on this release. Nina Kraviz delivers a typically sultry house groove on "Tanya", with hypnotic vocal samples and dramatic synths combined over a clicky analogue groove. By contrast, Nikola Gala's "The Pump" bristles with steely drums and churning chords, while Jochem Paap aka Speedy J goes back to his roots to deliver "Klave". Recalling classic releases like "Ginger", its subtle claps and subtle tonal shifts make for a timeless techno groove.

Review: The latest in what is becoming known as the "versus" series features a range of styles. It varies from the low slung bass and dark wave synths of the No Ears take on Worst Case Scenario's "Hot Beef" to the chugging, Basic Channel-style chords of Alexkid's "Mousseur Dub" as well as his stripped back, jacking take on Nina Kraviz' "Pain In The Ass". UK vs France also features label boss Matt Edwards' "Loose Joint", in its "Molly's One Day One Night" remix format, which involves skipping percussion and powerful subs. But best of all is I:Cube's take on Toby Tobias' "The Feeling", where sensuous melodies are combined with the most haunting vocals this side of Dead Can Dance.

Review: Following releases from Hemka, P.Leone, Shinedoe and SRVD, Rekids' sister imprint returns with more of its 'grittier, fully techno focused remit.' This instalment in the Reduction series belongs to Brazilian producer Marcal, featuring five powerful cuts in the vein of his contribution to the series' last volume. Hard hitting and hypnotic minimal techno in the vein of Robert Hood can be heard on "Sentinel" and "Rolling Sway" respectively, equally mesmerising is the heads down, peak time energy of "Jackie" and finally Marcal teams up with homeboy Alex Justino on the drum-driven percolator jack of "This Body" making for another great DJ tool.

Review: Theo Nasa has previously released material on Andy Blake's World Unknown, Suara and his own Alien Sound Trax imprint, and now brings his distinctive techno sound to Rekids. "Dubska" is a relentless, dub-fuelled roller, while on "World Dance", Nasa embraces breaks and bowel-busting sub-bass to deliver a wild rave workout. "Summertime Raving In London" is less frenetic, but deploys a powerful bass at the heart of its driving rhythm, while its evocative melodies will strike a chord with anyone who has partied in the UK capital. Despite its title, "Ninja Tune" has little to do with the label of the same name, and sees Nasa fuse bruising kicks with a ragga-style vocal sample. Rounding of this fine EP are the out-there 303 shapes of "Gabrielle Gabacid".

Review: Following on from his evocative, at times rave-tinged material in 2020, Radio Slave returns underground for this heads-down EP. Similar in style and approach to the recent Floorplan material on Rekids, this four-tracker is punctuated by robust bass drums, spiralling chord sequences and militaristic percussion. "Variations V1", with its ticking hi-hats and doubled up claps, gets the EP off to a rousing start, while on the "V2", Matt Edwards takes the intensity down for a broken beat affair that has echoes of Fachwerk's catalogue. It's only a brief reprieve, however; "V3" is a storming affair, led by billowing chords and dense kicks, while the fourth and final version resounds to ominous synth stabs and niggling percussion.

Review: Fred P delivers his second release of 2020 on a label that is tailor made for his tough but soulful sound - Rekids offshoot Stranger in the Night. The title track is a linear, driving affair; powered by a powerful bass drum and featuring a droning riff at its heart, these elements make for a hypnotic fusion. "Construction" also makes effective use of just a few sounds, with a murky bass coming together with dissected vocal samples and brooding synths to create an eerie sound. On "Alphabet City", the US producer goes deeper, with looped chords and sensuous strings unravelling over a jacking rhythm, while "For The Dome" is a beautifully evocative slice of soulful techno.

Review: Released last year, FBK aka Kevin Kennedy's debut album, More Stories From The Future was the culmination of a few years working with Rekids. Now the label has commissioned Len Faki to remix two tracks from the album. On his 'Hardspace' take of "I'll Sit Back", the Berghain resident pitch-bends the vocal sample and sets it against a thundering percussive track that is sure to have maximum impact in big rooms. Faki's take on "Hassling" is even more idiosyncratic; underpinned by his trademark kicks, it sees him layer firing percussion and plaintive chords again this backdrop that ensures the end result is deep but impactful.

USB - (7:05) 126 BPM
Review: The incendiary partnership that is Patrick Mason and Rekids boss Matt Edwards' SRVD project returns to the label for this tough two-tracker. On the title track, the pair lay down pummelling tribal drums, dense thunder claps and a searing, hardcore bass. These elements provide the basis for a vocal narrative about wearing black - presumably a reflection of the sartorial choices of the audiences that they play to. "USB" also takes influence from 90s sources, but on this occasion, the pair keep the vocals to a minimum, fusing time-stretched shrieks with pounding kicks and coruscating rave riffs that burn their way through the arrangement.
