How We Knew - (6:59) 126 BPM
from $1.90
Review: There's a real 'no nonsense' feel about Robsoul's releases these days. With most deep house labels seemingly content to sheepishly follow fashion, Robsoul's dedication to the bumpin' side of the genre is refreshing. This three-tracker from Anhanguera is boompty through and through - all tough kicks, party-flavoured disco basslines, snappy snares and the sort of classic vocal-samples that will have punters reaching for the lasers ("How He Knew", for examples, bites Gladys Knight's version of "Heard It Through The Grapevine"). The slightly deeper, disco-fied "Made In Loveland" - all swirling strings and heart-tugging horn stabs - is probably the pick of a solid EP.

Review: It's another Robsoul release so you know what to expect: looped up, sample heavy, downright dusty and funky house of the deeper variety. The title track has the infectious disco repetition of label boss himself Phil Weeks or legend DJ Sneak and is absolutely made to play. On "It Popped Into My Head" things get even deeper and funkier with its bumpy bass rhythmic shuffle plus that unmistakable French touch. There's variety, rest assured; "MPC Ain't Playin'" explores some deep funk breaks on this useful tool while the hip hop vibe continues on "Raw Is The Fight" up until that four to the floor kick drums stomps on in for this delightful street level jam reminiscent of Max Graef and Glenn Astro's stuff.

Review: It's fair to say that Around7 has become one of Robsoul's most fundamental artists, now having released over a dozen EPs for the French imprint. The Paris native has a distinctive sound, one that's embued with swinging MPC force and, of course, a deep-minded jazz sensibility that makes his music appealing to the diggers and DJs alike. Fittingly, "The Woman Behind Me" is a funky house nugget with a charging bass drum and some killer hyptnotics on the upper end of the arrangement; "U Talkin' To Me" is similarly funked-out, except the groove is stripepd back and more moody, unlike the more soulful strides of the samples forming the core of "Philter". All in all, a pretty angelic affair from the Parisian - keep it comin'!

Review: French disco deviant and Robsoul/Ondule mainstay Around 7 is back with more bumpin' and loopy house jams for proper house gangsters on the rather infectious "Discotronic" with its hypnotic bass riff and dusty drums really doing the business. "The Woohh Sound" does exactly what it says on the tin: you could really imagine DJ Sneak or Mark Farina using this one to whip up a frenzy at some Chicago basement party. Finally we have "Kiwi Kawi" which serves up some late night deep house of the smooth and sexy variety.

Review: A resident of Silicon Valley, this son of a discerning funk and soul collector now sees his tasteful beats reach a wider audience, release his latest jam The storytelling EP on Parisian label Robsoul. There's more than a nod to the vintage sound of French touch house in the slammin' disco loops of opener "Another Day". Elsewhere things gets deeper on the low slung and jacking "Deep Inside Of You", the retro loops return on the more proggy/tribal title track and the mellow twang-bass joint "Delight" wraps things up nicely.

Review: San Jose, California's Arturo Garces has sure come a long way since running independent labels Jump Recordings, Beat Bum Music, and Resource Records. He's back on Phil Weeks' esteemed Robsoul for some more real proper deep stuff with Beats From The Street Vol 4. Starting out with the sleazy and minimal bump of "Fazer", things get rightly funky and filtered on the big room groove of "Move You" but saves the best for last on the infectious disco loop tool "Rubber Band".

Review: West Coast producer Artruro Garces has been quietly been going about his business since the turn of the Millennium, releasing solid, club-ready material on a wealth of labels. For his sixth outing on Robsoul Recordings, the San Jose-based producer has served up a quartet of tracks that sit somewhere between classic West Coast chunkiness (think Onionz, Hipp-E and Halo etc.), the disco-fired bounce of DJ Sneak, and the kind of woozy, bass-heavy, tech-tinged deep house that Robsoul regularly releases. We're particularly enjoying the rubbery disco bass, restless cowbells and filter trickery of opener "Catch Me", though drowsy, piano-sporting deep house roller "Homebase" is also pretty darn good.

Review: With their pedigree firmly established on labels as vast and varied as Skint, Hudd, Liebe Detail and Audiomatique, Bora and Vinyl step over to Robsoul for an extensive journey that was inevitable; the duo's scratchy, uncompromising loopy tech funk fits Robsoul's repertoire so perfectly it's nigh-on marriage material. Highlights across this five track banquet include the wah-wah guitar-slapping loops of "Old Beats", the warped jazz and Chicago-flavoured boompty-boomp beats of "Back 2 Back" and the lolloping double bass on "La Danza". This won't stay secret for long - jump on it now!

Review: Part 2 begins in a much more chipper mood. "Calais Douvres" seems to spill a joyous attitude out of every hole. A bristling beat and hollow percussion sets the tone from the off before Carrier's signature groove swings in and sweeps the listener off their feet and on a fun filled ride.
"Quadrilette" keeps a similar attitude, but this time adds a churning bassline that is so raw you can hear it rattling away at its deepest depth. Tribal-like percussion adds the funk and the tone is lightened further by the female vocal as made famous by Til West's "Same Man." Ending with the drum led "Le Divan Japonais," the release saunters into a rhythmic groove. Sub bass murmurs beneath the percussion at first but then makes itself more prominent as Carrier lets loose.

As a child, Carrier was exposed to all the classic sounds of the 60s and 70s through his parents. Yet as an adult, he discovered the techno raves of the early nineties. Both of these influences can be heard in Carrier's music, as he attempts to bring the best parts of both sounds together into one place. He manages this task with a seemingly natural ease here.

At a time where the boundaries between genres are continuing to blur, Gosse De Paris, both parts 1 and 2 make their own conclusions on the formula of modern electronic music.

Review: Robsoul veteran Chris Carrier can usually be relied upon to deliver the goods. This four tracker for the Paris-based imprint is chock full of his usual bumpin' beats, bowel-botherin' basslines and boompty-inspired cut-ups. "Bongo Thunder" (curiously named, as it doesn't feature bongos) leads the way, jumping between cut-up hip-hop breakdowns and booming boompty rhythms. The tech-tinged title-track delivers a little more swing and some Rob Mello-ish electro sounds, while "Acid Drop" thunders from the speakers like the four horsemen of the apocalypse going speed dating. Closer "Japan Air" has a deliciously jazzy swing, bringing a tough EP to an uplifting close.

Review: Some fun acid house from the Robsoul Recordings archives available for the first time digitally. Originally out back in 2004, School Of Acid sees veteran French producer Chris Carrier tee off against Robsoul boss Phil Weeks and Bay Area house music staple Hector Moralez under their Fries & Bridge nom' de plume The title track is an all bouncing, all jacking acid house house work out, with Hector's "This Is Acid" vocal refrains riding the 808 drum pattern and undulating acid lines as neat little scratch noises drop in the mix. 'Turn It Out' sees Fries & Bridge drop a loose kick drum pattern that gets overwhelmed by a pulsing sub bass before a scattergun of hats signal a further onslaught of bubbling acid synths. Finally, 'You Got Me Open' sees Carrier fly solo and a lot deeper, crafting a solid groove aided by neat vocal edits.

Review: Following a fine recent hook-up with old pal Dan Ghenacia on the reborn Music For Freaks label, Chris Carrier returns to Robsoul Recordings, an imprint he first graced way back in 2004. He begins with the booming, tech-house/disco-house hybrid "Fever Tree", before doffing a cap to his angular, metallic tech-house passed on the chunky box jam "To The Wonder". On "Feel Good Tonight", he successfully dips his toe into the crystal clear waters of vintage U.S deep house, layering rich chords and snaking sax samples atop a bumping groove. Finally, he doffs a cap to fellow Robsoul regular Rob Mello on the low-slung, peak-time workout "Inside".

Review: Having previously released plenty of high grade deep house on acclaimed US labels Large Music and NiteGrooves, Chris Stussy is clearly a natural fit with long-serving Parisian imprint Robsoul Recordings. Certainly, the lolloping bottom-end bounce, crunchy but swinging drums, fluttering chords and descending bassline of "Nightdriver" fits snugly into the Robsoul catalogue, while Phil Weeks no doubt appreciated the jazzy pump of "Crate Diggin". Speaking of jazz, the Dixieland samples, jaunty bass and loose-but-booming drums of "One Way" recalls the label's "boompty" period, while "Lonely" sounds like vintage "French Touch" disco-house with the excessive filters removed.

Review: Former Large Music and Nite Grooves man Chris Stussy returns to Robsoul Recordings for a third time, bringing with him a quartet of tried and tested box jams for deep house floors that like it funky and chunky. He eases us in gently with "Boogie Trippin", a swinging, breakbeat-driven cut rich in tasty hip-hop vocal samples and sparkling riffs, before dialing into eyes-closed disco-house territory via the head-in-the-clouds bump of "Flow Distinction". "Next To You" is a more hypnotic, locked-in and bass-heavy roller, while EP closer "Selfless State" wraps snippets of hazy modern soul vocals and elongated organ chords around another rolling, loose-limbed deep house groove.

Review: Long-serving deep house producer Konstantinos Malamis ALA Cockney Lama returns to Robsoul following 2016 outings on Moodyhouse, Something Else and Henry Street Music. Predictably, he begins in confident fashion, layering woozy vocal samples over a wiggly synth bassline and bumping beats on "Baby Funk You". The track that follows, "I've Never Been There" is similarly high octane in feel, deriving much of its power from Derrick Carter style drums and a low-slung disco bassline. Elsewhere, "No Worries About My French" is an attractive and punchy disco-house bumper, while "Johnny The Danger" is a low-end stomper smothered in boomty drums and sampled guitar licks.
