Review: Rua Sound push some of the crispest breaks around, and this EP from San is no different. It's four tracks of eerie, atmospheric jungle that's been crafted with presence in mind, of that feeling of a journey, of moving through a space. That space has an aesthetic of fog and mist, of moss-covered floors and crumbling walls. Part urban, fully urbane, San has come out with something seriously unique. Its title tune - 'Subject 9' - is grounded in shuddering drum rolls and peachy snares that ripple with vibrancy. 'Cleanse' is even deeper, a slightly uncomfortable track that takes you on a journey through space and time, except the galaxies are kick drums and cosmic space is made up of wispy, spooky pads. What a release.

Voyage - (6:55) 170 BPM

Review: Irish label Rua Sound have built a reputation for releasing some of the most creative jungle music around, and this EP from newcomer Arcane is no different. If you're looking for harsh ragga jungle then this might not be the EP for you, but if you like your music packed with sophistication and creativity then it almost certainly is. Arcane has pulled off a masterclass in making music that takes you on a journey, and the constant evolution of 'Labyrinth' are a testament to that, as neon synths and chopped out vocals mutate in real time alongside precise break work. 'Voyage' is the standout track from the LP, as loping halftime touches gradually build into a sumptuously deep track with more vibes than you can throw a stick at; it reminds us of Mystic State or someone similar, and Arcane has done a fantastic job at taking the jungle formula and pushing its boundaries. First class.

The General EP
The General - (3:42) 164 BPM
Seek & Find - (3:32) 168 BPM Hot
Shudder - (3:51) 170 BPM
Turnt Up (feat I-Mandala) - (3:35) 175 BPM
Review: Not to generalise or anything, but Touchy Subject is an absolute badman! With an extensive smorgasbord discog going back a few years now on labels as disparate as Astrophonica and Twizted Movements, here we find him returning to Rua with four more beguiling system-shaking hybrids. 'The General' is proper sci-fi dance hall with the flabbiest of basslines you'll see this side of the pastie factory. It's followed by the purring rootsical rolling dub workout "Seek & Find", an ultra sinewy and venomous "Shudder" and, finally, the head-scratchingly beautiful shuffles of and skitters of "Turnt Up". Unique.
