Running Back

Founded in 2002 by Gerd Janson and Thorsten Scheu, but now primarily run by Gerd, Running Back is a German label that’s made a name for itself for its spaced out, melody-rich, modern house and disco flavours. Running Back has so far seen feel-good releases from the likes of: Roman Fluegel, KiNK, Dusky, Alan Dixon, Tensnake, Tiger & Woods, Lauer, Tornado Wallace and more. The label also boasts some incredible peak hour tracks, including Krystal Klear’s ‘Neutron Dance’, Todd Terje’s ‘Ragysh’ and Storken’s ‘Lille Vals’.

Review: Prins Thomas follows last year's Ambitions long player with a somewhat different proposition. Inspired by early 90s trance and wrapping this influence around a variety of tempos and grooves, Traens is an interesting departure. The foreboding bass of "Traens 2" and "Traens 3" are sure to appeal to those who want a big room take on sounds of a bygone era, while the pumping, acid-soaked "Traens 6" is a pure, old school track. This only tells half the story however, and on "Traens 4", Thomas draws on his love of sleek disco grooves to create a spaced out, cosmic affair. There are also traces of Balearic flair, and the deep, sensuous house of "Traens 5" shows that while Prins Thomas is caught in a trance moment, he remains rooted in disco.

Review: It's hard to think of a label that would be less likely to release Neil Landstrumm's music than Running Back, so this EP underlines the fact that anything is possible. Admittedly, the Scottish producer has tempered his sound somewhat for Shitting Diamonds; "Sex With Madonna" and "Centurion X" both see the maverick producer make his sound more accessible, thanks to the pulsating bass tones and synths that swirl in overhead in majestic fashion. "Shame" also revolves around a throbbing bass-line but on this occasion, the synths and approach are more lo-fi. "Night Walker Zwei" meanwhile is a tougher techno work out, while he ends the release with the chugging electronic disco of "HI_Lm".

Review: While he's been keeping himself in the spotlight via some suitably glassy-eyed and loved-up remixes and collaborations, Phillip Lauer has not released much solo music in 2018. Now we know why: he was putting the finishing touches to "Power", his latest full-length for Gerd Janson's consistent Running Back label. As you might expect, all nine tracks ripple with giddy audio references to vintage dance styles of the '80s and '90s, from the synth-heavy Italo-disco revivalism of "Phaser7" and "Mirrors", to the rush-inducing electro positivity of "Direction" and the almost overwhelmingly sun-kissed pulse of Balearic-minded ambient opener "Blissos". While his inspirations are overwhelmingly old-fashioned, the resultant tracks are rarely less than brilliant, with the instrumental synth-pop rush of "Realistic" and muscular, Bobby Orlando-esque sing-along "Power" amongst the many sparkling highlights.

Review: Second time around for Syncbeat's "Music", an influential early UK electro workout made by members of legendary Manchester outfit Broken Glass and mixed by local hero Greg Wilson. This surprise Running Back reissue includes all three of Wilson's original 1984 mixes. There's the wonderfully deep and glassy eyed Afro-electro/synth-pop fusion of the Original Mix, the Bobby 'O' Orlando-influenced shuffle of the "Remix" and the stripped-back, delay-laden edit brilliance of the dub style "More Music". Fresh reworks come from German house stalwart Boris Dlugosch who tidies it up and beefs it up whilst retaining the loved-up vibes and chanted vocals of the '84 original. His two DJ tool style revisions - the bodypopping "Bonus Beats" and sunrise-friendly "Tribal Reprise" - are also superb.

Review: Ame's consistently high quality output, which has been lapped up by house music lovers for many a year now, can work against them. Each release is so consistently good that it becomes the norm, and as such they can sometimes pass you by. Thankfully such concerns are thrown out the window on this 12" on Gerd Janson's Running Back imprint - a remix of 80s art funk oddity "Nature Makes A Mistake" by Son Of Sam. A thumping acid line sets the tone, before a swirling Oni Ayhun-esque synth melody drops in towards the end, bringing things to a mind melting conclusion. The extra production assistance of Marcel Dettmann gives the track some extra thump, while the original 1984 version - only released on a Bain Total cassette sampler and now remastered by Ame - is an unearthed gem in itself. Caps duly doffed to all involved. Superb!
