Review: The track titles alone should give you a good idea what to expect of this three-tracker from Argentina's Jonathan Douglas Braverman, better known as Ladies On Mars. 'Disco Rock' kicks things off, an unashamedly camp little strutter with a Eurodisco bassline, Lipps Inc-ish strings and some killer 'pyow!' stabs. 'Dance Move' is a funkier affair that owes a debt of inspiration to Crown Heights Affair's 'Dance Lady Dance', before we're played out by 'Lunch Box Boogie', which is funkier still and features some fine parping sax. If you're drowning in a sea of cosmic, Italo and prog and looking for some PROPER disco, here it is...
Review: More deep jazzy mood music courtesy of Miguel Migs' Salted label out of San Francisco, on the eleventh edition in its Crossed Signals series. Czech producer Zetbee delivers the sensual late night groove of "Walking Over Me", Aussie upstarts TIGER MINDD deliver the sexy Sydney shuffle of "Tiger Crossing", while Brazilian Gustavo FK delivers the latin infused sunset bliss of "Jazz To Me" and British duo Delaines go for more of a Stateside sound on the sultry swing of "That's House" with its legendary vocal samples throughout.
Review: Four tracks from four artists make up this V/A sampler from long-running US deep house label Salted Music. Vian Pelez's 'Green Boulevard' gets the ball rolling with a warm, luxuriant bassline, looping female snips, plainitive sax parps and reverberating keys. Medsound's 'Love Goes On' balances its dark, techy synth bassline with Maria Estrella's archetypal west coast vocal, Teddy Black's 'Stay' is a more stripped-back affair with a pleasing garage-y bump and a sampled female R&B vocal, and then finally Sous Marin bring us 'Body Rock' with its classic Jefferson-like pianos and 80s soul vocal. Left coast deep house at its best.
Review: Alek Soltriov has been on fire of late, delivering a string of well-regarded EPs for the likes of King Street Sounds, Juiced, Blacksoul and Different Attitudes. It's little surprise, then, to find that this first solo single for Miguel Migs' Salted label is also rather good. The headline attraction is undoubtedly opener "Marvin", a formidably chunky, bass-heavy affair that wraps soulful Marvin Gaye vocal samples and glassy-eyed piano riffs around a typically tough deep house groove. There's plenty to admire elsewhere, though, from the elastic drums and mind-altering electronics of "Another Level" to the skipping, garage-influenced early morning trip that is "New Days".
Review: Over the years, Californian producers and labels have developed a distinctively warm, summery and sun-kissed strain of deep house full of smile-inducing disco flourishes and a wavy, happy-go-lucky vibe. It's this trademark sound - most often associated with San Francisco - that's explored on this fine EP from San Jose's Jarred Gallo. Highlights are plentiful, from the gently bouncy, glistening disco-house loveliness of closer "Touch of Spice", to the tactile, squeezable deep house jazziness of "Midnight Society". You'll find a slightly more driving take on disco-house in the shape of "Here We Go", while "Be Alright" sees Gallo doff a cap to the worlds of electrofunk and boogie in trademark fashion.
Review: San Francisco deep house don Miguel Migs is still at it; but he never stopped really. The man synonymous with popularising a distinct sound at the turn of the millennium as a regular staple on the now legendary Naked Music imprint (alongside such other acts as Aquanote, Blue Six and Lisa Shaw), Migs also presented other variations on the deeper shades of music under such aliases as Petalpusher. Running his own Salted Music imprint since 2004, he's presented works by Julius Papp, Soul Drifter and Lisa Shaw, not to mention his own productions. It's business as usual on "Broken Barriers", a deep disco-tinged and soulful affair for lovers on the dancefloor. Another sultry groove comes in the form of the sexy and slinky tech house energiser "Backdrop" (Classic Club Rub) with its hypnotic chords, tough enough rhythms and razor sharp bassline geared for some late night sweat.
Review: Returning to Salted Records is honey voiced vocalist Lisa Shaw. Here she presents "I Can't See It", co-written and produced by Miguel Migs. The tunes is presented here in two very different incarnations. First up is the Miguel Miggs Vocal mix, which begins as deliciously deep and sultry late night disco house before sweeping into arpeggiated synthiness. The "Deluxe Dub" version meanwhile, gets grittier with some seriously dirty jackin' funk vibes added to the mix.
Review: Sydney's Husky is a busy boy; running labels, being one half of Random Soul and DJing all over the gaff. Here though, he resorts to his solo moniker, one that is more known for a soulful house sound. In truth though, "So Crazy" sounds more like retro electro-house, like SMD's "Cruel Intentions" with a bit more oomph. "Can't Do Without You" goes further back still, sounding like Jesse Saunders' "On And On" - albeit the funky house remix.
