Review: Akkord's Liam Blakcburn returns to Samurai with his first extensive body of work since last year's Night Of Visions album. Retaining that ominous eerie sound that's laced with high levels of restraint and tension, each cut really penetrates with character and stern sonics; Both "Old Earth Voodoo" and "Distant Stare" have a certain momentum to the drums that creates a stately subversive dark funk. "Thoughtforms" is a much more sedate piece with strange alien textures swooping back and forth with a tripped out psychedelia. Finally "Burialground" brings the most energy to the EP with its rolling percussion elements and rising sense of dread. Genuinely unique.

Review: It would be fair to say that Clarity, AKA Cornish producer Owen Brown, is something of a prodigy. He was just 17 when his debut EP dropped on Horizons Music in 2012, and he's since gone on to deliver impressive, often experimental material for Med School, Exit and Samurai. Here he delivers his debut album, a set that takes the accepted structures of drum and bass and mangles them into unusual, atmospheric new shapes (often by pitching them down). Of course, there are other dominant influences - most notably dubstep, ambient, tribal techno and IDM - and these combine to give Infinite an unusual, murky and off-kilter feel. It's a remarkable debut, all told, and one that cements Brown's reputation as one of leftfield D&B's most unique talents.

Review: Ahead of his album Infinte, Clarity drops the demonstratively dark trio "Hell's Gate". The title track takes the lead; fronted by T Man, a stark weave of kicks are all T needs to fill the gaps with his barbed bars and crystalline message making. Overlook collaboration "Engineering", meanwhile, whisks us deep into the soul of modern jungle; all skippy drums and a loopy tech-like groove, its sinewy insistency can penetrate any dance. "Hours" brings us to a stark steppy close, all spacious and slick, it's powered by echoes just as much as it is subs. Bring on the album already!

Review: LA hardcore roustabouts Romero & Mekano return to Samurai with two disturbing slices of future music. "Land Of The Lost" is all about the drums. Whether it's the subtle-but-plate-shaking snare shots on the breakdowns or the $100,000 firework display of live drums and breaks on the pay-offs, this has enough power to shave your whiskers from another room. "Tremor", meanwhile, is a lot more pensive where the drama is in the energy and noises that are being withheld. A lesson in restraint. More please.

Review: Topping off an incredible year in which he's launched his own label (Weaponry) and delivered three EP troves of deep drum darkness, Seattle's Homemade Weapons presents his debut album Negative Space. Followers of his disarming, physical, rolling sub-heavy sound will know exactly how important this is: the flurried amen crashes of opener "Hawkeye", the cavernous ricochet rhythm shots of "Retina", the heavily pressurised space station pads, micro-traces of jazz and busted drum fury of "Conduit", the gurgling Doc Scott style drones and sense-blurring space between the drums on "Red Herring". Homemade Weapons has captured his stark signature with slick, subtle detail and created a document that compounds everything we've suspected since he emerged in 2011.

Review: Whether this Seattle born producer is going to get you get hauled in front of Scotland Yard's top surveillance syndicate for Googling his name or not, the potential kerfuffle is probably worth the risk. A pristine blend of dusty vintage amens and crisp, on point production leaves other producers biting their fists and dancefloors packed. It's no wonder so many have converted to his unconventional dark drum and bass over the past couple of years. You won't know you want this until you hear it. From then on, there's no turning back. You've been warned.

Review: One of the most innovative drum & bass albums of 2016 gets the all-essential remix-treatment, Samurai-style. Mr Weapons himself takes the lead with an amenised Rupture-ist jungle twist of "Tidal Tack", Ancestral Voices whips up a spellbinding wall of sound experience on "Spasmolytic" while The Untouchables switch out the rifle like breaks of "Killing Moon" for gallons of slimy dubspace. Finally Sam KDC turns "Echoes" inside out to reveal a dark, droning techno mutant. Negative space: the final frontier.

Review: His first fresh material to land since his powerful debut LP document Negative Space, Homemade Weapons returns to Samurai with four more outstanding 23rd century jungle compositions. "Heiress" impresses instantly with jittering breaks, scorching textures and molten reese basses. "Street Cleaner" is a rifle-like militant drum assault while "Pyrosome" rattles with an unusually funky shuffle for the Canadian artist, hitting in a way that's not dissimilar to Paradox. Finally "Nabilone" rounds off with a brutal fusion of breaks, spliced savagely over densely pressurised atmospheres. This heiress's throne awaits....

Review: More frequently spotted on his own Utopia imprint, Metalheadz or Warm Comms, Mako lays down his hypnotic charms on Samurai. It's a perfect fit; "Let The Truth Be Heard" hums with vibrant Vangelis-style synth blasts before dropping into wriggling waspy alien basses. "Forbenji" is a more physical affair with juke-style drum shots, crazy pitched snares and melodic, head-turning twists. Hey Mako, 2039 called... They want their future back.

Review: As Nucleus and Paradox, Dave Simms and Dev Pandya racked up a bounty of drumfunk classics for the likes of Reinforced, Metalheadz and more between 1997 and 2009. Coaxed back into the studio together earlier this year for a killer drop on Metalheadz Platinum, it was clear the old studio chemistry between Pandya and Simms had not dissipated one iota so the sight of further Nucleus and Paradox material is no surprise. Adding Samurai to their collective collar, lead track Prism is a prime time roller filled with hefty break beats, classic jungle vibes and trademark Nucleus and Paradox sub bass. The flip "Electropaque" finds the pair in a more contemplative mood without any concession to rhythmic punch.

Review: If the names Loxy, Resound and Overlook send a manic shiver up and down your spine, let's cut to the chase - you need this release. Minimal tribal; it's fair to say that nobody does it like them. Especially when they've teamed with Samurai to release it all. Ritualistic assumptions aside, these tracks are everything you need them to be. "The Lodge" broods and builds, thumping dampened drumskins, whiel "Harbour" has Loxy and Overlook working their magic with industrial heaviness and claustrophobic distortion. This isn't music, it's the gateway to the underworld.

Review: A third of Ruffhouse, and a highly regarded solo operator in his own rights, Pessimist may have a gloomy look on the world, but his studio focus is far from foggy. "The Woods" is a rolling techno romp through the halfstep axis. Misty, moody but clear in its destination, you'll miss the trees by a whisker and come out the other end unscathed. "Leadfoot", meanwhile, is much more of a militant march into the unknown as sheet metal sound design wraps itself around full-steam drums. Unique.

Review: Under the Ruffhouse banner, Bristol trio Pessimist, Cooper and Vega have been cultivating their own menacing fusion of techno and drum and bass forms across a series of records for Ingredients, as well as appearances on Modulations, Cylon Recordings, and Alignment Records. The first Ruffhouse record of 2015 sees the crew align with Samurai Horo for Straight 9s, a stunning two track journey into the ghostly depths of machinery. The title track may be the trio's most potent examination of the crawlspace between techno and drum and bass yet, with all manner of hellish sonics wedged deep in the mix. Complementing this, the downright rude "UVB-76" steps to it's own beat too and sounds like Milton Bradley collaborating with Shackleton.

Review: DJ Presha's Berlin-based Samurai Music returns from the depths of the shadows with a shiny new album from the label's shiniest new artist, Theme. So far, we've been impressed by what we've heard from the man, meaning that this new Passages LP is a great opportunity to hear how his sound can stretch beyond the constrains of a single. Thankfully, he has delivered something of a marvel, an eleven-track journey that works like one glorious piece of music; the word "Passage" feels ever-so right as the transition between these tunes becomes progressively more organic. Remaining largely genre-less, Theme offers a spectrum of drum-led experiments, almost always full of swing but never sticking too closely to the 4/4 formula. The LP has been inspired boy the glory days od jungle and d&b, that's for sure, but the artist has taken that energy onto new planes, a distant planet that manages to sound ancient and futuristic all at once. Recommended.

Review: Berlin's own Samurai Music imprint has been holding its own across futuristic drum & bass and tech releases for what feels like a long time, consistently delivering high quality releases and eye opening compositions. With this in mind we were thrilled to see the second edition of their 'Samurai Music Decade' project hit out shelves. For us the immediate highlights on this one have to take into account Calibre's monstrous halftime excursion in 'Snoopers Dub', along with the vibrant percussive drives of 'Khans Of Takir' from Shiken Hanzo and the futuristic techno flavourings of Sam KDC's 'Locus'.
