Review: Second time around for Stefano Tirone's 2020 album Body & Soul, which he's now fully reworked into a more club-focused 'Disco Experience'. In practice, that means that he's taken the acid jazz, soul and jazz-funk-informed originals and re-framed them as deep, soulful and musically rich disco and boogie influenced delights. It was a smart move, and while some tracks work better as disco-soaked tracks than others, the versions of 'In The Name of Love', 'Pra Voce', and the Sunburst Band-esque '(Got To) Move On' are particularly special. Nu-jazz outfit The Invisible Session's luxurious, laidback bossa-house take on 'Odoya' is also superb.

Review: Gerarado Frisina has always been something of a vinyl enthusiast, meaning plenty of his releases have never made it to CD or digital download. It's these that form the basis of Modern Latin Jazz, a bespoke "best of" that gathers together tracks released at various points over his 16-year career. You get two of his best releases - this year's fantastic Latin Blue album and 2015's Olympia EP - in their entirety, plus tracks taken from rare and hard-to-find 12" singles from the dawn of the decade and long before. The two-disc set does a great job of showcasing Frisina's increasingly dub-tinged approach, mixing Latin jazz floor-fillers, percussive stompers and snaking jazz-house shufflers with more traditional bossa-jazz fare and the kind of warm, loose-limbed nu-jazz that was once found on Jazzanova albums.

Review: S-tone Inc. returns with Superbacana and contains four tracks with a funky Brazilian flavour. Inspired by the Black Rio sound that represents the encounter between samba and American soul funk music since the '70s. The title track is a mid-tempo jam that could be considered 'soul: brazuca style' but with a modern touch. That one features the spaced-out vocals of Toco, Paola Silva and Luzia Dvorek. Fabrizio Bernasconi also plays a fantastic groovy solo on Fender Rhodes too. There's also a handy dub version of this track with an outstanding Marquinho Baboo performance on percussion. Then "Zona Norte" with Paola Silva on backing vocals is a funky-disco jam and as the title suggests: it names all the main quarters of the north side of Rio de Janeiro and is a perfect example of the Brazilian attitude to disco-funk. "Zuzu" closes the record and is inspired by Guimaraes' disco groove. Featuring 4Maree: a vocal ensemble from Sao Paulo that includes Bruno Morais and Kika with Toco and Luzia Dvorek. Bass, guitar and Wurlitzer are all performed by Stefano Tirone, who's also responsible for this EP's recording and production process and is the writer with Toco of the three tracks

Review: Alex Puddu's Afro Soul Prophecy project continues to blaze into the year with pure molten lava grooves. "Daddy's Groove" is a perfect summer heater with its laid back horns that ooze over the wah wah licks and strutting rim-shots. "Let Me Be Your Lover" takes more of a Latin approach with its upbeat rhythm and bossa tendencies. Listen out for those cosmic guitars in the background... Dreamy business.

Review: Building on the heat of last year's "Devil Made Me Do It", Alex Puddu's Afro Soul Prophecy returns with more smoking jazz fusions. "Red Light District" is as hot and illicit as the title suggests thanks to its prominent drums and heated horn work. "The Game Of Love" plays the perfect counter with its much softer, sentimental swoons and loungey dynamics. Instant summer soul soothers.

Review: Alex Puddu is the mind behind such classics as 'The Golden Age of Danish Pornography Vol. 1 & 2', as well as 'Registrazioni al Buio'. A multi-instrumentalist, composer and funk addict hailing from Rome and based in Copenhagen collaborated with Joe Bataan: who encompasses everything that Latin Soul meant in El Barrio and to the Spanish-speaking people of NYC and beyond. Together they are Soultiger. Close your eyes and listen to this collaboration. Whether you were born and raised in Rome, Paris, London, Copenhagen or any other city, listening to Bataan and Alex's production, you will be taken back to Spanish Harlem and its mean streets. Milan's Paolo Fedreghini delvers some great remixes from the LP here, all are pure class!

Review: Like many drummers, Alex Puddu has long been inspired by the work of Tony Allen. He pays tribute to the legendary Nigerian sticks-man on "The Devil Made Me Do It", a sumptuous dose of groovy downtempo Afrobeat laden with Allen-style polyrhythms, Africa '70 horns and lashings of eyes-closed electric piano solos. Then you'll find two different interpretations from Puddu. The first, subtitled "The Invisible Cosmic", doffs a cap to the Afro-cosmic world of Daniele Baldelli while retaining much of the warmth and musicality of the original mix. "The Invisible Astral" version is an altogether more spaced-out dub, with Puddu smothering the drums and horns in copious amounts of tape echo.

Review: Alongside Schema label-mate Nicola Conte, Gerardo Frisina has been at the forefront of the Italian nu-jazz scene for the best part of two decades. In that time, he's released a string of fine albums, though this full-length excursion - his sixth in total - is Frisina's first since 2014. Like previous sets, it's rooted in jazz and the heavily percussive rhythms of South America, but also looks to dub and deep house for inspiration. While some of the album's more traditional moments are very good - see the breezy "Blue Latin" and "Naquela Base" - it's those blessed with heavy sub-bass and lashings of echo and delay (check "InCantao" and "Baracoa") that hit home hardest.

Review: A timely revisit to two of the stand out covers on Italian jazz/lounge posterboy Andrea Balducci's 2012 album Bloom. "Spooky" is a soft, sweet and succinctly measured take on Shapiro and Middlebrooks' mid 60s standard while "Hurts So Bad" is a respectful twist on Weinstein, Harshman and Randazzo's similar era classic that was made famous by Linda Ronstadt years later.

Review: Time to hop over to Milan for Schema label boss Gerardo Frisina's latest offering. This time we get two tracks that capture Frisina's retro-futuristic vibe perfectly: "Passion Dance" is all deep spacey house, with hazy vintage samples wafting over gentle, almost microscopic, beats. Things get livelier on "Space In Time" with a faster, shuffley lounge beat duelling with some jazzy sax trip-outs.
