Review: The Occupants series is a split release project from Science Cult, the label that artists like Carl Finlow, Cygnus and Umek's Zeta Reticula project all call home. This first volume covers electro, but in the broadest sense. Thee J Johanz' "Woodpecker" is an acid-fried break beat track. At the other end of the spectrum, Aura Nox's "Mutiny On The Voyage To Azimut" sees the Science Cult artist voyage to the sound's outer limits. Remaining in that space is Blixaboy's dub-tinged "Bushido Initiative". St. Theodore presents a more ominous sound on "No Future", an arrangement that is led by a punishing sub-bass, and for a pure futuristic hit, it is hard to better the skeletal rhythms of Arsonist Recorder's "Heat Seek".

Review: There is no doubt that Science Cult is one of the finest contemporary electro labels in operation - as this skull-rattling new EP demonstrates. The work of Serbian producer Alavux, it harks back to the high-speed electro sound of the early 00s, albeit with a darker, more industrial sound. "Phase" sets the tone with claustrophobic, whooshing filters unravelling over dense, pounding drums. There is no let up on "Steamed". If anything, its visceral, doubled-up kicks and searing rhythm mark a ramping up of intensity levels. "Noise Machine" is also aptly named: over an intense rhythm and blasts of percussive noise, it sees Alvalux drop a bass that is truly ominous in it design.

Review: French electro journeyman Fleck E.S.C now based outta Tokyo lines up the 486.134 EP for Science Cult, a fresh label to surface in 2019. The artist's instalment makes up the sixth iteration of the eight-part Astra Spectra series with five IDM inspired electro sessions that takes in the one remix by label co-founder Syrte. For that deeper groove, flecks of acid and pumpy kick drum look to "Hot Bath" that falls in line next to some deeper, industrial and spaced-out sound designs as heard in "Further Away". The IDM refrain comes in thanks to tracks like "Inflammatory" with its star-gazing electro motifs and sweeter synths, next to spangled worker's techno in "Lost Privileges" and Sytre's twisted fever dream of "Inflammatory". Real deal science fiction Fleck!
