Review: With over 20 years worth of productions Roy Davis Jnr has had a totemic influence on Chicago house and beyond so it's no surprise that "Rock Lights" is his second release via the automotive music behemoth Scion AV. Teaming up with vocalist Bear Who? the original sees Davis Jnr's typically soulful instrumentation driven along by a clattering groove and laser like synth stabs with Bear Who? providing the requisite auto tune. It's the remixes where things get interesting though with fellow Chicagoan Bryan Jones opting to chop up the vocals and go for a full on jacking acid house thumper. Blog favourite Treasure Fingers glitches up the vocal and introduces a typically lysergic synth melody that works in harmony with the beefed up club drums. Rising duo Mighty Mouse take the plaudits here with a cyber disco remix that lets the momentum build before unleashing the hook across a backdrop of delightful synth washes.
Review: A totemic figure in UK Garage, Todd Edwards' production styles and skills are once again bearing their influence among producers everywhere, which makes "I Might Be" and its remixes even more timely. Chopping the vocals in his own unique way, "I Might Be" is stuffed full of brain-burrowing hooks and is up there with anything from the man's discography. Joy Orbison is a natural choice to work up a remix and he gives it his own trademark psychedelic 2-step treatment, complete with vinyl crackle and a full vocal. MJ Cole also turns up the trippyness with a stunning collage of ethereal sounds woven together over a tight beat. Ed Banger's Feadz tones things down and does a jacking Chicago meets French house rerub which adds its own vocoder touches to Edwards' vocals - simple yet highly effective.
