Review: Six months on from his Scruniversal label debut, which we rightly waxed lyrical about, sometime Super Spicy and Elephant Chords contributor Nico Cortazzo drops a speedy sequel. Cortazzo hits the ground running with 'My Mom Was Cool', a sample-rich fusion of colourful nu-disco and string-laden disco-house flavours piled high with jazzy guitar licks, kaleidoscopic synth sounds and fuzz-fuelled electronic bass. He opts for a dreamier and smoother sound on the wonderfully saucer-eyed 'Let It Shine', a genuinely brilliant slab of tactile and enveloping deep house bliss. The man's got serious skills!

Review: Born and raised in Cork, Ireland, but now living in London, Tree Threes is a house and broken beat inspired producer taking a lot of reference as he moves forward from fellow Cork natives Fish Go Deep and of course the West London broken beat scene. Here he arrives on Scruniversal with three funked up, sample heavy numbers, taking in phat bass licks, sultry horns and shuffling drums in "Be In Love" - one for that approaching London summer. "Where's The Party" goes a little deeper, bluesy and housey with them chords, while "Too Deep" gets a little bit skippy on the beat, stays subtle on the melody, and keeps it super jazzy without any ragtime. Hotness.

Review: Hamburg-based deep and tech house producer Sven Wegner drops a two-tracker for Scruniversal that operates at the slightly more leftfield end of the deep house spectrum. 'Jumana' centres around warping (possibly reversed?) synths that it marries to simple rolling drums and cut-up vocal snips, with the mid-section break dropping down into a sparse funk groove, while the accompanying 'Bringin' Back' has a wonked-out, garage-y feel, and wouldn't sound out of place on Kerri Chandler's Madhouse. Neither's going to get many spins down your local Ritzy's but both will play well on more discerning deep house floors.

Review: Lord Kyno is a deep house producer who hails from Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), and here he comes to Sruniversal with two cuts that'll please those who like their deep house on the more experimental side. 'Langiphuma Khona' is a sparse, jerky affair that starts out sounding like something from the more out-there fringes of early 00s two-step before settling down into a somewhat smoother, jazzier groove, while 'Come Over' has a dusty, Balearic kinda vibe. Both are better suited to longer mixes and post-club chilling than Saturday night dancefloor stompin', but it's an EP that's definitely worth checking for those with open ears and minds.

Review: If your deep house tastes veer towards the quirkier side then check for this latest offering from Scruniversal, which is the work of Curitiba, Brazil native and Playperview label boss Henrique Oliviera, AKA HNQO, who cites influences as diverse as Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash, KiNK, Roman Flugel and Jeff Mills. 'It's Fine, You'll Regret It' is a jerky, stuttery affair with a wonky, warping bassline topped by all manner of ker-razy synth squiggles, the overall effect being somewhat redolent of vintage Classic or Freerange material, while 'Sunday Jam' is a dusty, looping piece whose natural role in life is surely as a DJ tool in mellower sets.

Review: Kim&Buran are probably best known for their work on the seminal Nang label - and if that doesn't give you enough of a clue what to expect here, then perhaps their description of themselves as a "Russian retro-futuristic space disco band, playing sci-fi, cosmic easy-listening, space disco and downtempo" will! Nu-disco in the classic Nang style is the order of the day, with 'Discoscope' bringing all the dreamy, driftaway 80s synths and vocodered vocal snips you could ask for, placing them atop a walking bassline and a chunky but not overbearing 4/4 kick. Just the one mix, so there's not really much more to tell you.

Review: Introducing Raw Slavs who re-enter the fray on the back of their 2019 debut (Born In R) with some woozy, tripped out and syncopated funk tracks for Scruniversal. Holding down that disco vibe still, "Dreary Enuresis" rolls out with that heavy hi-hat section and hip hop-deep house crossover that's smoked out and raw. "Bite For Bitches" keeps that vinyl crackle poppin' and beat down drums banging with some filter funk loops to boot! Ace.

Review: We don't know who Your Ex is (lol) but what we do know is that they go beautifully deep here across a pair of jazz-tinged and seductive deep house delights. First up is 'Lima' which opens with swirling pads and steamy sax motifs that drift up top and mean love is in the air as the lush chords melt the soul. 'Keep Shining' is a more dynamic cut with a well-swung groove and the sort of rich piano chords that really hit home. Add in some crisp percussion and more mellifluous sax licks and you have a pair of timeless and truly musical house gems on a vital little single.

Review: Scruniversal have hit a real run of form of late and this latest offering from Nova Disco Club can safely be filed under "utterly essential", as the Russian producer reminds us all what proper garage sounds like! If you'd told this ageing snob that either 'The Funky Phantom' or 'Basis' were long-lost DATs recently discovered in the basement of Eightball or Movin' Records, I'd have totally believed you...both have that New Jersey bump 'n' shuffle down to a fine art, with 'The Funky Phantom' the pacier and busier of the two while 'Basis' is a bit more stripped-back and bottom-heavy. Outstanding stuff!

Autumn EP
Review: Scruscru's Scruniversal take a left turn into jazzier pastures than normal with this four-track EP from I Gemin, AKA Russian producer Mike Popov. The EP opens with the languid, cinematic instrumental 'Introfall (Autumn)', before moving into out-and-out jazz territory with the flute-laden 'Ninjazz Bit'. Funk and soul flavas then inform 'Dry My Tears' with its wukka-wukking geetars and (presumably sampled) gospel-like vocal, before '2Gether We Funk' plays us out in more "traditional" funk mode, with brass fanfares galore and a distinct car chase feel. Musically speaking 'Ninjazz Bit' is arguably the most impressive, polished piece here but it's '2Gether We Funk' that'll get those booties shakin'!

One Loooooove EP
Review: Following up some big recent tunes on Noire & Blanche and Scruniversal Tunes, Juravlove is back with more party starting and sample-heavy jams. These are DJ and dancer-friendly tunes suited to a range of settings. First up classic vocal samples define the fresh beats of 'Eleonora' then 'Crystal Cave' is all silky disco loops and 'Stoner Doner' slips into a sunset vibe for beach parties and open-air dancing. There is more of heady feel to the deep house grooves of 'Warm Gate' while 'Tap Water' goes for the peak time and the EP highlight comes at the end with 'Grand Delux'.

Review: Known for a series of releases and contributions to labels like Berlin Bass Collective, Moretin, APRH and now Scruniversal - Horsemen make their debut as number 14 in their catalogue. "Lockfunk" keeps it a fresh and original as a lead cuts should with an undeniable groove and old school, sample snippet. "Dream Up" leans toward a stripped-back and dubbed-out house jam, with "In Connect" something similar only with a melodic, Chicago house vibe. MOR'LOV turns in a rebuffed remake of the original in a EP that's pure beat-making, groove-laden bliss.

Review: Soweto DJ/producer Kurtx serves up three contemporary funk/soul shufflers for Scruscru's Scruniversal label. 'Got To Have Your Love' is a dense and dusty jam that'll appeal to those who like to explore disco and funk's wonkier outer fringes, though you might want to mix out before the reversed and mangled drums at the end... elsewhere, 'Liquid Disco' has echoes of the jazz-inspired sounds of early 80s soul and will suit longer sets and post-club sessions, while finally 'Behind The Groove' is a little more uptempo and could find its way into deep/soulful house as well as funk/soul/breaks sets.

Review: Scruniversal can usually be relied on to come up with the goods but this two-tracker from Nico Cortazzo - who has just a handful of previous releases on Elephant Chords and Material Disco to his name - is a proper gem even by their high standards. 'Soul Food Disco' is a fairly self-explanatory affair but joyous and uplifting in the extreme, with its Rodgers-esque guitar chops, fat funk b-line, soulful chorus and space disco stabs. The real killer here though is 'Jazzy Dreams', a deeper jam whose sensual, rolling jazz keys just don't stop. An absolutely superb release that you should acquire immediately!

Underneath The Pine EP
Review: Six months on from the release of his much-admired Midnight Resource EP on Infinite Pleasure, rising star Blazers makes his bow on ScruScru's similarly fast-rising Scruniversal imprint. The French producer hits the ground running with 'Sea Shore Loop', a gorgeously summery and positive-sounding slab of Italian dream house-influenced deep house pleasure, before reaching for echoing electric piano solos, groovy bass, restless house beats and hazy late-night chords on the equally gorgeous 'Another Midnight Phone Call'. Elsewhere, 'Underneath The Pine' is a jazzy chunk of sample-house smothered in attractive piano parts, while 'Pressure' joins the dots between vintage New Jersey garage and '90s influenced 21st century deep house.

Falling Apart EP
Review: Swiss deep house veteran Replika made his Scruniversal debut with a track on the 'Scuniversal Tunes 001' EP last year, and now he returns to the label with a four-tracker of his own. The 'Falling Apart EP' is a pretty mellow affair, with 'Before The Storm' a midtempo, jazz-funk tinged instrumental jam, 'Super Moon' a low-slung, low-tempo funk workout with "party!" shouts, 'Falling Apart' itself a dreamy, hazy affair with sparkly keys and sampled female vocal snips and 'Love And Hate' a drifty post-club kinda groove: dancefloor euphoria may be in short supply but it all adds up to 24 minutes of very pleasant listening.

Review: Label Affaire Records' regular A-Link has become the latest rising star to join ScuScru's fast-rising Scruniversal label. The French artist hits the ground running with 'Aquatic Rhodes Track', a seriously celebratory and summery slab of hands-aloft piano house driven forwards by a superb bassline and bouncy drums. He opts for a deeper and more seductive vibe on the luscious, early morning deep house wooziness of 'Unknown Extensions', which makes great use of (sampled) female vocals, before rounding off a fine three-tracker via the percussive-but-stripped-back late-night deepness of 'Straight Micro Groove', where cut-up, early Basement Jaxx style female vocal samples catch the ear.

Review: For the eighth release on the Scruniversal imprint, we see the return of Scruscru, this time joined by the enigmatic production talents of BR Selecta for a tasty new remix package, exploring the softer side of NUKG. The original mix of 'Feel This Love' is doused in slower rhythmic energy and chord-driven juice, giving us a refreshing look at a genre that has recently become flooded with electrifying intensity. We then explore the super funky percussive sweeps and groove-inducing guitar licks of Scruscru's 'Lounge' remix, followed closely by BR's jungle mix which takes those catchy vocals and spins them anew. This is a very well thought out remix collection that is sure to make a splash.

Review: For the latest missive on his Scruniversal label, Russian producer ScruScru welcomes Nicewon Recordings regular Jeff Swiff to the imprint for the first time. It's a quietly impressive and sonically attractive EP all told, with Swiff confidently striding between dusty, sample-rich sunshine house quirkiness ('Other Side of Uh Things', where elastic bass guitar, twinkling synth sounds and oddball spoken word snippets catch the ear), deeper and more hypnotic goodness (the starry keyboard solos, jazzy guitars and locked-in grooves of 'Never Not Doin' It') and hip-hop influenced 'MPC house' (the skewed 4/4 beats, woozy Rhodes loops and even woozier chords of 'Where You At Tho').

Review: Young Mexican producer Luca Ferrand impresses greatly with what is, as far as we can make out, his first ever release. 'Step Up!' blends together classic disco/funk influences, a dash of 303 acid squelch and a few well-chosen familiar vocal snips, all with a distinct deep house sensibility, while 'Jk St. Boogie' has a broadly similar MO but treads a slightly rawer, funkier path. Both cuts should ensure the shaking of any house- and disco-loving ass worth its salt, and both bode well for the future - these ears and this ass, at least, would definitely like to hear more soon!

Review: With this tasty four-tracker, Scruscru adds a new name to the Scruniversal roster, sometime DOBRO, Spinnin' and Dusty Editions contributor Selva. He hits the ground running with 'Get Up', a summery, thickset house jam crafted partially from samples of a hazy, horn-heavy old disco-soul gem, before successfully beefing up another Blaxploitation-era disco-funk jam on the similarly peak-time-ready 'Like That'. 'Good Ol' Days' is a deeper and crunchier - but no less sun-soaked - house jam that boasts some rather fine jazz guitar samples, while 'You Got It' loops up and dubs out a heavy funk workout, successfully re-imagining it as an MPC-driven disco-house looper.

Review: Scruniversal is a fresh label by DJ/producer Anton Bogomolov aka Scruscru (SlothBoogie Jamz/Omena) with his friends on board providing DJ friendly tools for your pleasure. Its third release features the boss man himself, laying down three versions of the sultry number "Long & Sleepless Nights". First up is the sensual late night vibe of the Flute mix, with more deep mood music to follow on the low slung and disco infused Sweet Fruity Brunch remix that's reminiscent of early noughties Naked Music et al. Finally, be prepared for some truly infectious sense of swing on the upbeat and funky club mix.

Review: Only the second release here from Scruscru sub-label Scruniversal. At the controls is Latvia's Will Sonic, whose work has previously appeared on the likes of Late Night Jackin', Sundries, Gents & Dandy's and Moodyhouse, and who now serves up two more prime slices of deep house goodness for your dancing pleasure. 'Fugazi' is a late-night kinda cut with a pleasing garage-y bump that makes it the pick for this reviewer, but the accompanying 'Right Vibe' is no slouch either, with a hypnotic warping vocal and the kind of delicate keys that mean it wouldn't sound out of place on Madhouse.

Scruniversal Tunes 002
Review: An EP featuring four different artists from the relatively new label from DJ and producer Anton Bogomolov aka Scruscru (SlothBoogie Jamz/Omena), although it has to be said its individuality and freshness are increasingly upping its profile as each new released drops. Russian duo Street Choice open up this time round, getting the swears in in a matter of seconds (and throughout) but lifting us into orbit with 'Still On Is MF Record', a gloriously sweat soaked collision of house, disco and US garage. Evidently feeling a bit more mellow, Scruscru himself offers up a Flute mix of 'Long & Sleepless Nights', evoking jazzier French house scenesters like Etienne de Crecy or St Germain. Juravlove's 'Boys & Girls' ups the tempo again and the mood with it, a cure acid line sneaking in behind more organic instrumentation. The more reflective Nephews' 'Polo Blanco' brings things to a warm, more snuggly close, ultimately leaving us with an EP that has heaps of variety and quality in equal measures.

Review: For the latest release on his Scruniversal label, ScruScru has turned to friend and fellow Russian deep house and nu-disco producer I Gemin. The sometime SlothBoogie contributor has delivered a tidy and tasteful three-tracker just oozing with class. Check first 'Astrafunk',a warming 188 BPM loop jam that peppers a rolling, jazz-flecked house beat with boogie bass, kaleidoscopic synth doodles, warming chords and spacey motifs, before admiring the early St Germain style jazz-house classiness of 'Make It Real'. To round off a rock-solid EP, he lays down a suitably trippy, woozy and surprisingly loose-limbed chunk of dusty loop-house whose restless electric piano motifs and rumbling bassline are undeniably addictive.
