UK-based Serial Killaz is a drum & bass and jungle label run by DJ/producer duo Serial Killaz aka Tera (Toby Scopes) and Vital Elements (Graham Warnock). Rolling onto the scene in 2008, the label has so far thrown out a handful of hefty compilation albums as well dropping heavy artillery from D&B soldiers Voltage, Upgrade, T>I, DJ Limited, Mozey, Saxxon, Kontakt, Exile, Mark XTC, Gold Dubs and more.
Review: Just when the sound technician at the club thinks they've got an easy night ahead of them, along comes Kontakt with 'Redlines At Dawn'. Overdriving your mixer with every sharp kick and gnarly bass texture, the whole EP is an absolute steamroller of a session and includes a few familiar faces... Serial Killaz flip 'Start Barking' into a whole dog pound of ruffage while T>I appears on the final two cuts... 'Format' sees him joining Kontakt for a dark and stripped back cut in the form of 'Format' while the EP concludes with a T>I remix of Kontakt's 2022 Richter scale ruiner 'Tremors'. Shake it baby!
Review: It's that thyme again! Filthy Habits are off to Tescos and heading straight for the condiment aisle for a little spice and seasoning. First up is 'Herb Deal', a bouncy bubbler that nods at the mid 2000s dancefloor sound and stinks of oregano. Elsewhere the tarragon-tinged 'Right Here' gets all switchy with its tear-out drops and bleepy flips while the swaggering Hazardian 'Brain Functions' will batter you will until you swear everything smells like dill. Deeper into the spice rack we reach for 'Disconnected' and shake our hips to the rattling rosemary scented loose limbed breaks while 'The White Feather' is a much colder, almost electro-informed stepper. It also reeks of parsley.
Review: Grab your crystal balls and squeeze them hard. Dust off your tarot cards and pass them round. Roll up those tea leaves.. You still aren't even close to Jam Thieves, drum & bass music's Mystic Meg. Over five tracks here he gets super real across the emotional spectrum. From out-and-out rage ('Attitude', with Serial Killaz) to heartfelt yearning ('Havana') via soulful and twisted ('Away From You'), JT lays down the gold and promises you a future full of funk and fire.
Review: Noxxic and 10AD return to the scene of the crime! Previous spotted 'cutting people first' together back in 2022, they're now back with even sharper VIP knives and you'd be wise to stay out of their sweary way! More cuts continue as the pair link-up on the super grizzly 'Quick Hands' before going solo with a tune each... 10AD's 'Throwback' is a stripped back bruiser coated in strange Simula style croaks while Noxxic's 'Neck Brace' is so heavy it might actually break your neck. Stay safe folks!
Review: Fresh from a slew of dispatches on Good 4 Nothing, Hijacker arrests our attention on Serial Killaz with these four bruisers. All savage, gnarly and full of gritty, atonal textures, each cut is a certified face-melter. Highlights across the EP include the venomous ripples and flexes of 'Poppin' (with Temple) and the raw energy of the title track 'Insomnia' which opens out with this vibrant rush-riddled intro before dropping into pure chainsaw funk fire. Killa EP.
Review: Sweet sweet murderation! San Diego's Sub Killaz returns once again to Serial Killaz and, as always, he's packing some ridiculous heat. Flexing right across the spectrum, from the opening snarls and growls of 'Hacksaw' to the closing piano trembles and high voltage sizzle of the title track 'Wake The Beast'. In between we're treated to two deadly collabos... Gum B gets his freak on with the trippy wubs of 'Psycho' while Konduit joins the party on the croaking funk up 'Train Track'. Beastly business.
Review: Down to earth vibes; Gravit-E and Serial Killaz link up once again for another jungle exploration. "Heavyweight Sound" sets the scene and the benchmark for the whole EP. Toasty vox and a fat dubwise groove, no one is under any illusion as to who's sound this is. Elsewhere we're caught up in the whirlwind of grit on "Technique" (with Lovell), we're bumper to bumper on the hype-clarting funk bubbler "Ediatt" and sent home with a sweet skank kiss on the finale "Wicked Love". Sound as a pound.
Review: Soundboys duck and cover, Jaydan is on the loose and he's coming for you! 'Soundboy Killer' says it all; big hurricane bass swirls and slamming drums galore, these will flatten all soundboys in a 50 mile radius. Meanwhile, elsewhere on this crucial EP, we have the staccato grizzles of 'Tekky', the dreamier, laser-reaching wilds of 'When I Look At You' and the system-testing surge and sizzles of 'Funktion'. Sweet murderation!
Review: Last spotted on Serial Killaz way back in 2017, Manchester murker Rowney whips up a near-album sized collection of bumpers and thumpers right here. All loaded with fresh energy and bright, high voltage sounds and samples, he's taking no prisoners. 'Crowd Bounce' and 'Swaggerific' both hit with a ghetto style approach to the vocal line while 'Down Diggy' goes for more of a euphoric vibe before dropping into one of Rowney's weightiest drops in quite some time. Elsewhere 'One Time' is pure laser munching grot, 'Right There' is a hooky bubbler that'll have you humming for days and 'Survival' (with Complex) finishes the EP on wonderfully weird flex. Swaggering all the way to the dancefloor on these!
Review: Super versatile, prolific and talented, Harley D has been a breath of fresh D&B air in recent years thanks to his endless slew of releases on labels such as Crucast, High Tea, Grid, Digital Terror and many others. Here we find him returning to Serial Killaz, the label that's had his back since day one, with a near-album sized collection of cuts that spans from gutter-chomping jump-up grizzles ('Junglist') to aggy, dancehall influenced vocals and skanks ('Realest') via wonderfully wobbly workouts ('Sun At Last' with Indecision) Yet another exceptional release from Mr D.
Review: Fresh from last month's firing EP 'Business & Crime' on Next:Gen the mighty Alphaze skids to a halt at the Serial Killaz HQ with six big wheeling bangers all shredded and treaded for some summertime slammage. Highlights in this festival of bangers include the utterly grotty and bleepy darkness of 'Oh Yeah', the twisted theatre and drama of the Nexus-linked 'Hostile' and the title track 'Pirelli'. Featuring G3 on the mic, there's so much fire in this hole you could cook a BBQ for three years non stop. Beefy!
Review: Previously spotted popping bottles on Serial Killaz, frequent collaborators Jenks and ACP collide once again for this humungous EP of tear-ups. Five vibes in total, each cut tickles a different corner of D&B's ever-sprawling underbelly. Looking for something subtle, classy and rolling? Jump on 'High Key'. In the need of some utter filth? 'Dark World' is for you. Hungry for a face-melting twist-up? 'Gangsters' is your tune. Want something aggy and heavyweight? 'Dummy' won't let you down. How about those high energy dancefloor flavours? 'Going Down' will hype you into the next decade. An immense EP from two of the new-gen's most promising names.
Review: A regular on Serial Killaz these days, Breakout returns to the label with one of his biggest releases to date. Featuring two solos and two collaborations with the likes of Magenta and StillZ, across the four cuts we're treated to an onslaught of dancefloor and big riff flavours. Each cut is a highlight but the chubby warm bass flops on 'Best Intentions' and the contrast between dark and light on 'On Third' are guaranteed face melters. Don't fake it, break it!
Review: In this episode of Serial Killaz Rise dons a jacket with suede patches on the elbows and does his finest impression of a history teacher... First he does the register with the title track, a glitchy, groany sci-fi wooze-out that disarms the class. Other aspects of the lesson include some light science with the super stepper 'Keep The Vibes', some birds and bees chat on 'You Gal' and some more serious words for the students on 'Warning' and 'One Away'. Will the class Rise to the occasion and pass in time for graduation? Press play and find out.
Review: Cor blimey this a pretty bonkers affair from the Serial Killaz label as they welcome newcomer artist Lumia to the fold and harness his brazen dancefloor energy. The intention and energy is evident from the off with 'I Want Your Body' (with Dagz). After a wild euphoric intro it plunges into a humungous drop of venomous proportions. Sheer shock and awe tactics. Elsewhere Jenks joins the mix for the grunting, grizzling stepper 'Loaded' while Lumia provides two solo pieces... The swinging junglistic vibes of 'Clean Up' and the nasty sci-fi fusion of the title track 'Reboot'. Genuinely sick.
Review: Hello is that 999? Can we have the fire brigade please? That's right we'd like to report a 'Blazin' Fire' which we understand to have been lit by the Serial Killaz. Oh you're aware of it and you want them to commit more arsons? Ah jolly good, love you, goodbye. Need we say more? Every track on this sizzling six piece is as scorchio as you'd expect from scene long-timers Tobie and Graham Serial Killaz. Other hot highlights include the lava-like bass on 'Talk & Dead', the charred remains of your soul after you've heard and felt the drums on 'Too Many Times' and the third degree burns you'll get when 'Trouble' oozes out of the speakers and touches your ear skin. Burn it up!
Review: Who let the dogs out? Steryx did of course, and he's not even carrying a leash or any treats to keep them under control. This is the sound of the canine furore; 'Mad Dogs' barks with grotty laser sounds, 'Contact' is foaming at the mouth with its high freq bassline twists, 'Shook' chases rabbits in its sleep with its springy energy while 'Submerged' is so powerful with its hefty kicks and bellowing bass it'll have you chasing sticks for days. Finally 'Sleeper Hold' cracks a tin of Pedigree Chum on your head and downs it in one. Who's a good boi?
Review: Spark up! It's national greens day once again and Serial Killaz are celebrating this with '420 Time', an unruly collection of 25 vaguely weed related titles and themes. The result is a full-on knees-up that covers a vast amount of D&B ground. From Upgrade's sticky-fingered moderation mission 'Ganja' to Harley D's sweet swinging sing-along 'Bud Business' via a collection of Top Cat fronted bubblers and so much more, this is a fine way to celebrate 420 and your favourite genre at the same time. Puff puff pass!
Review: Such a badman they named him twice, Jay Jay makes his debut on Serial Killaz with this alien-slaying sizzler sextet. Bubbly and bouncing from the off, the title track declares war on the red planet before we dip deep into rinse-out mode. Highlights include the Teezy-collabed grunting shifter 'Clawhammer', the laser-blazing razor sharp stepper 'Dip It Low' and the sci-fi hype fest 'Demons' where the bassline melts all dancefloors in a 50 mile radius. Ready for attack?
Review: Whether he's on Pick The Lot, Gradient or his most consistent home Serial Killaz, StillZ is fizzing all over the place right now, and he has been for quite some time. 'All I Need' is a vibrant, energetic reminder of this as he charges into 2023 with serious momentum. The title track sets the scene with raw fusion while 'Power Cut' (with Alphaze) kicks like a drunken donkey AND makes a statement about the current energy crisis. Elsewhere '95 Steppin' is the ultimate ear worm that wriggles and kicks infectiously in your brain for days and 'Ain't Got' (also with Alphaze) closes the EP with a lesson in pure wholesome build-up tension.
Review: He's barely recovered from a severe case of 'Rubber Legs' on Grid and already Gravit-E returns with another bombardment heavy enough to give us vertigo. Complete with a Serial Killaz stamp of approval, there's a strong housey influence with the samples on cuts like 'Changes' and 'Mr DJ' while the title cut is pure rumble funk, destined to do danger. Elsewhere we have the brilliantly and fittingly titled 'Mr Wob'. It's what you know, it's wob you know...
Review: Jenks is enjoying a seriously prolific bout right now with a whole tonne of releases on some of the most respected labels in drum & bass. Following his recent anthems on Dub Shotta the young talent also makes an appearance on Serial Killaz with some of his bounciest and most party-ready flavours to date. ACP appears on two massive collabs - the wonky grooving 'Bottles' and the immense rave beast 'What I Think'. Elsewhere Jak gets busy on the greasy groove 'Bass Reject', 'Run It' brings a little depth and space into the mix while 'Doctor' is all about the drama and suspense. Epic.
Review: Talk is cheap but bangers like the ones coming out of Toby Ross's studio right about now are priceless. Take this crucial Serial Killaz EP; five tracks of absolute mercenary murkery, highlights include the big belly bassline and bulging subs of 'Rattle', the massive MC chant and shattering breaks on the EP title track 'Watch Yuh Talk' and the habanero hot bubbles and flexes on 'Spicy. Less talk, more action.
Review: Both bubbling away on labels like Good 4 Nothing and Eternal Muzic, Breakout and Steryx collide for four addictive contemporary jump-up bangers. 'Rules' sets the scene with a monstrous bounce and widescreen harmonics on the bassline, 'Listen' gets sharper and more streamlined in its pace and focus while 'Torture' is much darker and tense. Finally Jay Jay joins the fray for the old school funk-up 'Mystic', a cut that licks up with classic 2000 jump-up cheekiness. Killa.
Review: Best pals, colleagues, housemates, collaborators; drum & bass's in-house Bert & Ernie AKA T>I and DJ Limited go toe-to-toe on the remix front as they get busy on each other's bangers. T>I takes Limited's skank-happy vibe-out 'Sun' and gives it a good old wonky rattling edge while Limited takes T>I's 'Changes' and completely flips them with a freaky trembling high freq riff and razzy bass revs. Serious swapsie action right here. Don't miss.
Review: Currently unstoppable: Harley D brings the vibes to one of his most consistent stomping grounds - Serial Killaz. As always, the results and wide, far-ranging and full-flavoured as he wriggles and writhes through his palette, tapping into all kinds of emotions. Highlights include the slinky slaps and bubbles of 'Blessed Vibrations', the ruff sketchiness and switchy beats of 'Infiltrate' and the mournful tones and groans of 'Go'. Immense.
Review: It's been a while since we dipped, tripped or slipped the night away to Kontakt on Serial Killaz but here we are as he's back with another generous helping of prime time D&B. Madrush keeps him company on the heavy energy and addictive bass of lead cut 'Start Barking' while previous release highlight 'Planet 9' gets a massive Shafique-front VIP lick. Elsewhere 'Broken By You' is an emotional, dreamy 6am stepper before 'Tremor' closes with EP with a 100 on the Richter scale. Boom.
Review: Following a huge March, which saw Jaydan drop three prominent releases on the likes of Rebellion, DRKMTTR and LoveThatBass, Jaydan returns to Serial Killaz with this firing four track blast-off. 'Snake Hips' flips between soaring sci-fi synths and a wrigglesome Serum-like riff that nags in your brain for days. It's backed by three more savage sessions: both 'Rastaman' and 'All The Remains' are your straight up booming 3am brock-outs while 'Vibration' flips the idea of a droning atonal bass with switch-ups into a staccato riff. Naughty naughty hip-shaking business.
Review: Social distancing begone! StillZ embraces the hurly burly congregations with this straight-up rasping waspy bassline jam 'Crowd Ah People'. The dancefloor pressure is maintained throughout the EP as he's backed up by some good friends. Jay Jay joins the fray on the grumpy bass barks of 'Nasty', Kormz brings heat to the hybrid twists of 'On Road' while Stoyley stops it, starts it again and does that thing on the rattling, rolling 'Dat Ting'. Shaken and stirred, come join the rabble.
Review: There's a strong stench of murderation in the air as Sub Killaz crash land on Serial Killaz with four utterly savage jams. 'Out For Blood' brings us all up to speed on the American duo's visceral vibe as they twist up a funky horn sample with some horrendously grotty basses. Elsewhere 'Bad Ass MF' goes all deep and subby, 'Tryhard' is all slams, blams and badass harmonics while 'In The Night' finishes on a 23rd century jazz flex as a vocal purrs and slurs between the weird bassline textures. Heavy.
Review: Serial Killaz celebrate all top ranking selectas with this XXXL sized bubbler. Big vocals, warm horns, awesome Amen break-outs and a bassline that gets smellier and smellier as the track progresses, it's an instant merry maker jam. Looking for something a little darker, a little slinkier, a little dubbier? Jump on 'Territory' then with its ghostly echoed vocals and shimmering organs. Badness.
