Review: There is a glut of mediocre nu-disco doing the rounds, but South West Seven rise above it on Waffles. The title track is as reminiscent of the golden days of indie dance as the disco new school as a baggy - remember that? - yet chunky guitar riff looms large over a low-slung groove. By contrast, "Bustin" is inspired more directly by classic 70s disco as a string-soaked groove and a cheeky 'keep bustin'' vocal snippet make for a real party tune. The remix of "Waffles" is also inspired by a distinct sound and the rolling bass and lurching bass could have come from that early noughties tech-house hotbed Croydon.
Review: Northern Irish producer Ric McClelland aka Scope has been releasing quality underground house for the past five years, but Concerns is one of his finest moments so far. Featuring jazzy keys, emotive synths and the kind of grunting, sweat-caked male vocal synonymous with classic US house, it's an effortlessly assured arrangement. In keeping with McClelland's observance of US house protocol, there's a dub version with heavier, rolling beats - although the sped up Spanish vocal is a neat touch - and Audio Soul Project's version takes the track to a deeper place thanks to some tasteful Moog solos and funk guitar riffs.
