Vanishing Point EP
Crimea - (6:57) 136 BPM
Oculus - (6:01) 132 BPM
Review: Seventh Sign has been in operation for close to two decades: with a small but selective catalogue, it focuses on quality over quantity. This approach holds true on its latest release - the Seventh Sign debut from Tim Jackiw. Vanishing Point is tailor-made for fans of techno's deeper, more esoteric side. Tracks like "Element" resound to warm, squelchy basslines and crisp, staccato drums and come swathed in dreamy strings, while Jackiw ventures farther into reflective territories on "Wisteria". Teeming with warbling melodies and underpinned by a brittle rhythm, it's one of the most beautiful tracks that the Scottish label has released - and that's really saying something.

Highway EP
Highway - (6:13) 130 BPM Hot
Thank Goodness I Found You - (6:27) 120 BPM
Review: A rare and rewarding record of sweet deep house beats from ambient legend of the scene John Beltran! Delivering Seventh Sign a first and only record for 2020, Beltran adds to a legacy of sound the label has released from the likes of Dan Curtin, Santiago Salazar and Keith Tuckey (Aux 88) to the label boss' Domenic Cappello's own Hutton Drive project. For the straight-up Chicago-inspired house vibes head straight to "Highway" alongside the sweetly dub-tinged "Now The Clouds Are Gone". Throwing in some dusty and lo-fi breaks alongside a giegling-esque albeit Seelfeel melody in "Thank Goodness I Found You" there's a most rewarding mass of tone, texture, crackle and vocal loops in a classic Beltran 'ambient version'.

Habit Of Mind EP
Masks - (6:10) 126 BPM
Aiken Drum - (6:39) 124 BPM
Review: Domenic Cappello's 2018 decision to hand a Seventh Sign label debut to young Scottish producer Bud Burroughs was undoubtedly a good one, with the resultant EP featuring some of the best Detroit-inspired techno, Ron Trent style deep house and club-ready electro around. Naturally this belated follow-up is equally as inspired, with Burroughs brilliantly flitting between spacey, electro-influenced proto-house ("Masks"), deep and melodic sci-fi house ("Alien Drum"), poignant and melancholic Motor City techno/ultra-deep house fusion (the mid-tempo shimmer of "161256") and languid deep space electro (killer closing cut "Oleano"). The most impressive thing about the EP isn't the high quality of all the tracks - that's a given - but the sheer depth and intricacy of Burroughs' electronic sounds.

Review: Enigmatic Glaswegian Leeon delivers in stunning style on this follow up to 2012's brilliant debut on his home city's classic Seventh Sign Recordings imprint. The enigmatic producer serves up the bittersweet and emotive "I'll Be There" (Hutton Drive edit) in the vein of Windy City heroes like Ron Trent or Larry Heard. The influence of the latter is particularly evident on the sublime "That Generous Friend" with its chunky Juno 106 bassline, airy DX7 keys and all round classic production qualities.

Julip - (5:09) 125 BPM Hot
On Yr Own - (5:59) 122 BPM
Review: Is Domenic Capello as good an A&R as he is a DJ? It might sound like a strange question, but over the past year, his Seventh Sign label has released two of the finest techno records in years. First there was Mihail P's epic Sleeper, followed now by Bud Burroughs debut EP. Hailing from Scotland, it is tempting to posit that newcomer Burroughs was schooled in electronic music at Capello's Sub Club residency in Glasgow. Accordingly, "With Awe, My Heart" is a timeless piece of Detroit-inspired techno, its bouncy groove and warm, seductive bass providing the basis for reverberating claps and dreamy pad and synth climaxes. "Julip" is a wonderful, widescreen electro workout, while on "On Yr Own", Burroughs picks up the pace again with a Ron Trent-style, string-soaked deep house workout.

Sleeper EP
Sonder (Hutton Drive mix) - (6:08) 125 BPM Hot
Theta Wave - (6:26) 128 BPM
Review: Sleeper is Mihail P's first release, and it would be hard to pick a more revered label to debut on. Established by Sub Club resident Dominic Capello in 2001, Seventh Sign has been home to Dan Curtin, Marcellus Pittman and Keith Tucker as well as one of the great house records of the past 20 years, Lil' Jazz' Sound of the City. Needless to say, Mihail P is in good company, but his own material is of the highest quality. "Theta Wave" is a sublime, slinky deep techno track, laden down with blips and bleeps, while on "Semblance" he goes slightly darker, as steely drums and a moody bass underpin those mysterious chords. Cappello turns in an early Ron Trent-style version of "Sonder" (the synths are very Altered States), while the Gnork take on "Semblance" is redolent of techno-soul producers like Derek Carr. It's a stellar, sublime release.

Virtual Headspace EP
Virtual Headspace (original mix) - (6:55) 120 BPM Hot
Virtual Headspace (Neville Watson remix) - (6:14) 120 BPM
Review: Brad Peterson is becoming a firm fixture in the deeper end of the house spectrum, what with his own output and his 2DeepSoul project with Rai Scott on their shared Inner Shift Music imprint. This latest release for Seventh Sign confirms his steady rise, placing him in the league of such respected craftsmen as Marcellus Pittmann, Keith Tucker and Santiago Salazar. The quality contained within speaks for itself, with the title track unfurling on a bed of warm acid bass draped in icy keys, in contrast to the peppy electro cartwheels of "Nomad Technology". Neville Watson delivers a remix of "Virtual Headspace" that keeps the joyous nature of the original intact with a more bouncy lilt to the groove and a touch more raveyness in between the pads.

A New Chapter
The Outsider - (10:17) 122 BPM Hot
The Outsider (Conforce mix) - (5:57) 120 BPM
Review: Always a label known for unearthing some of techno's deeper producers, 7th Sign present the debut from Glasgow based producer Leeon, a producer with a flair for Detroit moods that evoke the productions of Rick Wilhite and Marcellus Pittman. "Birth of a Season" wraps sunset pads around restless strings, while "Miles and Miles" creates a piece of helium-light intergalactic soul that Space Dimension Controller would be proud of. "The Outsider" is the real killer though, as a twisting arpeggio rushes across deep Rhodes keys. Finally, Dutch techno don Conforce delivers his own take on "The Outsider", placing the melody firmly in the background, swathing it in delay and firming it all up with gritty 909 beats.

Smile Now, Cry Later - (6:38) 130 BPM Hot
The Battle Within - (6:28) 123 BPM
Played by: Shadow Dancer
Review: Like Marty Bonds or Mike Huckaby, Santiago Salazar is one of those Detroit producers who have yet to receive the acclaim that his work deserves. It's a pity because as Smile Now demonstrates, he brings a polished, classy feeling to techno music. The title track is a wonderfully deep affair, populated by playful piano keys and sensuous strings, but it can't compare to "The Battle Within". Taking the warbling acid of UR and combining it with the spaced out jazz of Galaxy 2 Galaxy, this is Detroit futurism at its most seductive, more so because it is being interpreted by one as sophisticated as Salazar. Indeed, it's a sign of his refined approach that even when he ups the tempo considerably on "Varrio Clarkdale", his musical approach still sounds cultured.

The Eastside Story
The Mad Underdog - (8:48) 122 BPM
You Want Me (Never) (original mix) - (7:35) 112 BPM Hot
An Afternoon's Delight - (6:46) 119 BPM
Review: Glaswegian label Seventh Sign score something of a coup, securing the services of Detroit machine funk technician Marcellus Pittman for their 21st release. The 3 Chairs member (alongside Kenny Dixon Jr., Rick Wilhite and Theo Parrish) opens proceedings with the tense 303 squelch-out that is "The Mad Underdog", which bubbles along with acidic intent for the entirety of the A Side. Warmer textures abound on the flip, with the gentle synths and shuffling percussion of "An Afternoons Delight" (dub), before "You Want Me (Never)" brings it home. Another fine release from a producer with a discography that already includes 12"s with Fit, Sound Signature, Track Mode and FXHE.

The Land Of Dreams EP
The Land Of Dreams - (5:56) 119 BPM Hot
Motivation - (6:49) 123 BPM
Review: It's hard to believe that in such a high-tech musical environment, a 20-year-old record can still captivate audiences. Nonetheless that's exactly what G Strings' evergreen "Dreams" has achieved. Thanks to some smart A&Ring on the part of Seventh Sign, this release by a mystery Chicago producer has been resuscitated - and it sounds just as fresh as the day that it was recorded. Raw, driving beats are combined with surging basslines - in particular check the predatory feeling of "Motivation" - and crashing snares that are reminiscent of those used so effectively on Ron Trent's "Altered States". On both "Images" and the title track synths capture the middle ground between eeriness and melancholia, culminating in the best reissue since the Virgo represses.

Chord Memories
Chord Memories - (8:06) 122 BPM Hot
Review: This single track from Glasgow?s Sub Club resident Hutton Drive keeps the tempo a few notches down for most techno releases but it really benefits for it, especially when the gliding organs and buzzing stabs are as tasteful and affecting as this. Having the snare clap wait and wait is the masterstroke - you can't fight the feeling when it finally drops.
