Review: The identity of the Pan European individuals behind Shaddock Records can remain one of those pleasant mysteries we can live with so long as they keep releasing such interesting records. This fifth release is a perfect example of their approach, concentrated around "Beats In Space" a track from Tadd Mullinix that was originally intended for broadcast as part of the Ann Arbor producer's set on Beats In Space back in 2009. The hauntingly brilliant electro track remained in limbo until the Shaddock crew heard Mullinix drop it during a JTC set in Berlin earlier this year and persuaded him to add to the Shaddock discography, along with two further all new JTC productions. Added reason to indulge comes in the shape of a wonderfully dreamy revision from Hinge Finger and Meakusma artist Madteo - the Queens dwelling Italian producer's first commissioned remix - which strips the track of its spectral leanings in favour of a woozily saturated melodic flow.

Review: In almost a year the pan European and vaguely mysterious Shaddock imprint has established a reputation for releasing music that sits comfortably in the grey zone between house and techno and is largely analogue in hue. Given that one of its founders is alleged to reside in Vienna the more presumptuous amongst you might stake a claim at Tin Man being involved given the remix he contributed to the label's inaugural release, and the more compelling evidence of this full EP from the Vienna dweller. Regardless S_MPL_ HOUSE is undoubtedly his most immediately gratifying work to date, paying well crafted homage to an obvious master on opening track "T_DD T_RRY" whilst the title track is just as simplistically effective in its execution. "AUT_ REPEAT" is Tin Man on hypnotic form, little more than a punchy low end bump battling it out with dizzying crystalline repetition, whilst the title for "DJ SN__K" should give a hint to the sound.

Review: The Pan European collective known as Shaddock did it right with their debut release from Hitsafe, and they follow with the sounds of Spanish producer Pilas. You may know Pilas from a clutch of minimal releases that have surfaced over the years, and Ellen Allien deemed fit to include a remix of his on her Fabric mix - however there's clearly been a swerve in the direction of his production. "Burros" is much more experimental in tone, almost referencing the click house movement that was popular a while back, though the fidgety robotics and stripped down programming are embellished with a gloriously warm bass. Demonstrating their fledgling prowess, Shaddock enlist Kassem Mosse (The Bosse) to remix the track, with the resultant effort a heavily narcotic descent into a cacophony of crashing drums and bubbling sonics. The remaining tracks demonstrate Pilas' versatility - bringing more traditional house sounds to the fore via the simmering cinema noir Motor City bump of "Without You" and the fully stacked jack of "Monologue". Despite this being only their second release, there's a consistency in sound, presentation and quality that should ensure Shaddock remain a label to keep a watchful eye on.
