Review: Shadeleaf Music is a label founded in late 2013, curated and run out of Sheffield by Thatmanmonkz. Next up on the label is Georgia's very own DJ Applejac, a 'Hotlanta' veteran and recent alumni of Jazzy Jeff's Playlist Retreat, who brings three slices of exceptionally constructed house music on the The Adinkra EP. Featuring the beautiful trumpet of Miles Bonny on the title track, some sample heavy and funked-up slo-mo house on "B&P" and some soulful hi-tech nu-jazz/broken beat on "G.A. Tech". All in all, it showcases not only Applejac's playing and programming skills, but also his extensive and wide ranging crate digging and musical influences.
Review: A love letter to the Basement Boys 2001 classic with Ras Baraka "An American Poem", Malik Ameer Crumpler lays down an incredible, wry and poignant sermon over a swing beat that builds into some fine freeform horn work from Leron Thomas. A fusion that spans Sheffield, Paris and New York, pays homage to Gil Scott Heron and delivers a critical message, the timeliness of this is legitimate.
