In 2020, they astounded the music world with their debut album, "Research & Development," released on the renowned Shogun Audio label. Now, they make a triumphant return to Shogun Audio with "Fear, Ego" EP, an extraordinary six-track masterpiece blending a selection of idyllic productions with exciting collaborations featuring Lenzman, Halogenix, and Zoe Kypri. A perfect example is the track "Sentimental", where the duo's expertly crafted production features loping bass, hazy keys, and ambient elements combine with Zoe Kypri's enchanting vocals. Review: One of Shogun Audio's most stand-out sound crafters, Sustance comes correct with his debut album Perceived Connections. Featuring the likes of Strategy, Flow Dan, T Man, Visages and many other collaborators, the whole album is a slide and glide across the most futuristic plains of D&B. From the autonomic style opening title track through to the final woozy beatsy closer 'Lost Inside' via the booming swagger of 'Ten Ton', the poignant soul 'Sweet Relief' and all kinds of cool trips and twists along the way, this is an exemplary debut artist album. Get connected.

Review: Friction's mighty Shogun look back over one of their best years to date with this epic album of 2022 highlights. From Pola & Bryson's unavoidable anthem 'Tell You What' to DRS's yearning 'Want You Back', the full range is here in all its glory. Ideal for those who've missed anything, it's a great reminder how broad the Shogun sound can be as we're eased and teased between utter gutter munching paranoia jams like Sustance and Duskee's 'Scum' to sublime soulful cuts like Bcee and Javeon's gilded 'Worship'. Splendid.

Review: Shogun's resident soul merchants are back with their first EP since 2018, a long period which reflects the time taken to produce their unbelievable debut album last year. The train is back in motion, however, and the Method EP is aligned with the diversity of sound and depth of soul they displayed on Research & Development. The title track is a darker touch, a rolling, moody tune that swells in the bassline and cuts through in the percussion, a track that's tailor made for the reopening of raves this summer. KSR gets involved on the effortlessly soulful 'Breathless', which ripples with summer funk in a dreamy, heady kind of way, and there's another superb garage outing on 'Stamina Creux'. A 140 EP from these guys would not go amiss, that's for sure. Superb EP.

GLXY - "New Soul" - (4:18) 172 BPM
Review: Shogun's resident masters of wispy, effervescent soul are back and it's with a two tracker, the A-side of which features Rhi on vocals. It's a crunchy, bouncy track that moves with a deliberate sense of funk but in a manner that floats and whispers, a synthetic smoother produced right in line with the high-quality music GLXY have been pushing for some time now. The flip is effortless soul music, a rolling embodiment of liquid drum & bass, with a smooth vocal hook, featherweight drums and a delicate yet punchy bassline. More superb work from the boys here.

Review: Shogun have a forthcoming compilation and it's one which shows just how good a year they had, all things notwithstanding. It features music from GLXY, Sustance, Koherent and more, and what's notable is just how many are from producers relatively new to the Shogun camp, evidence that the Brighton team are doing the best they can at nurturing the next generation. GLXY are at the forefront of that generation and they have several tracks featured from their Spring album, Research & Development. 'Conclusions' feat. Steo is one of the best, a feathery light liquid number with a dusting of harp and a dash of vocal magic, a sultry approach mirrored on their critically acclaimed single 'She Sings For Me' feat DRS. Koherent's recent, infectiously funky number 'Bliss' makes an appearance, as does several tunes from Gerra & Stone's rebirth as GEST. Big.

Be Forgiven - (4:32) 172 BPM
Sustance & Monty - "Lapis" - (4:31) 174 BPM
Review: Sustance, without a doubt one of the most exciting new producers on the minimal end of the spectrum, has his first ever EP on the Shogun main label. Blood Money is an exceptionally good outing, one drenched in a coating of reddish hedonism, the sound and the feel of the underground encapsulated. Its title tune says the most with the fewest words, a deeply rhythmic track that bubbles with its bongos and bangs with its basslines, a stripped back yet forward looking item of fearsome proportions. The ever-present Charli Brix features on the rolling 'Break The Habit', whilst Monty's feature on 'Lapis' leads to the creation of a jump-up infused number with attitude at its core. 'Be Forgiven' isn't the most outspoken but might just be the best, as tender piano notes flutter above its penetrating underbelly. Top, top class.

Into The Blue (Ed: It remix) - (4:57) 174 BPM
Review: Friction's Brighton-based imprint are doing things in style with this one, as Pola & Bryson meet DJ Marky for a flourishing example of high-level production chemistry that has now yielded its first full length EP: Run The Streets. It's darker than you might expect from two producers who are definitely known more for their contributions to the liquid side of the scene, and whilst 'Trouble' definitely ticks thatt box, it's the pummelling low frequencies which will really get your head nodding. 'Dogfighter' is the highlight in that regard, its striding percussive line walking boldly through a shimmering outer mirage of underground oscillations. Ed:it lands on the remix for track four to tie things up in style.

Review: Koherent are Shogun's newest signing and Second Storm is their sophomore EP, their second storm if you will, and once more they've opted for a broad approach encompassing a variety of styles. It's their way of doing and we're into it, especially when it sounds as good as this. 'Thunder' is a tightly packed, minimal number which explodes out the blocks with as much energy as you'd expect from its title. 'Close To Me' carries on the minimal tip but takes things in a soulful, almost synthwave direction, whilst 'Wine Spill' is possibly the highlight, with chopped up vocal samples and offbeat, loping funk. Big up to the boys.

Review: Groove doctors GLXY finally deliver their highly-anticipated debut album. No three-part EP business. No early singles. Just boooom... One fat PHD-level slab of research on intergalactic soul and bass. Peer-tested and approved across disciplines, it's everything we've come to expect from the Shogun duo. Sublime, heart-hitting soul ("She Sings For Me" with DRS, "Conclusions" with Steo), deep midnight prowlers ("Falling") and dirty little grizzlers ("Fourth State") are all dominant flavours in the R&D mix along with subversive surprises such as the sweet two-step vibes of "The LP Track" and ghostly future garage with "Crescent". All laced together with the dreamy cosmic consistency they're known for, the results are conclusive... This is one of 2020's big D&B albums.

Review: Document One dropped their debut album on Shogun Audio last year and it was packed full of wicked dancefloor anthem, as well a a number of liquid and jungle cuts. Anamorphic is their first outing since then and it's gone down the heavier route whilst also incorporating some junglist tones, a wicked combination that represents the diversity present on Friction's label. 'Rave Culture' exemplifies that best, with a ferocious breakbeat and chopped up vocals combining to make a monstrously heavy and catchy club-focused riddim. Lovely stuff.

Review: Monrroe is one of a spate of new signings taken up by the Shogun team in their effort to stay one of the most relevant, cutting edge drum & bass labels in the game. Monrroe is the ideal candidate for this task, a producer who blends the soulful with the biting and the flurid with the respectable. Endless Change is his first full release on the label and it's wicked, with a combination of vibes and an endless changing repertoire of sounds. Jinadu features on the gorgeously rolling 'Horizon', whilst things get stupidly deep and dark on 'Your Lives', the highlight of the release. An excellent start to his Shogun career for the young producer.

Review: Having just celebrated their 15th year with one of their best ever collections, Friction's Shogun Audio look back over a strong year of sonics. Flexing a stellar rollcall of all the label's talents - Ed:It, GLXY, Technimatic, Pola & Bryson, Monrroe, Document One, Koherent and many more - there's an exciting energy to the label's collective and this collection captures that vibe. Highlights include Ed:It's fast-lane percussive roller "So True", the deep dream manoeuvres of Koherent and Charli Brix's "Voices" and Document One's epic electrified shredder "Holy Moly". These are just three of 20 reminders of why Shogun have had such a great year in 2019.

Review: It's been 15 years since Shogun Audio burst into life on the South Coast and under the watchful eye of Ed Keeley AKA Friction, as well as K-Tee, it's grown and grown into one of the best labels in the business, without a doubt. From the classics like Perez's seminal 1984, to more recent, futuristic numbers from the likes of Koherent and Document One, the label is truly diverse and that's represented extremely well in this 15 Years Of compilation. Featuring a litany of acts both old and new, including Technimatic, Pola & Bryson and Friction, this one is for the proper fans. Document One's 'Vibration' is a favourite of ours, with a stupidly cool, distorted bassline that packs a tasty hardware edge, undergirded by a click-and-snap drum line. Pure quality right here.

Can't Stop Thinking - (4:51) 174 BPM
Review: Ed:It continues his "Sihouettes" series with another wide-armed collection of precision D&B. As with the previous editions in the collection (that will eventually comprise to form his debut album) the range is wide, incisive and reveals his deepest influences and knowledge of proper foundation drum & bass. "Can't Stop Thinking" lights the fire with an introspective, dark and sexy vibe (think Shogun era Perez) while "Empty Eyes" gets proper sultry on the vocal side and proper heavy on the bassline / production side. "Endings" takes the crown for the darkest jam of the EP, though; pure grumpy funk, not dissimilar to the recent work of Tyrone (or FD when he's in a badboy mode), there's something very classy yet disgusting about it. Finally he tags up with fellow Shogunites Pola & Bryson for "The Ticket", a slinky, subdued creeper that gets darker, deeper and more immense as the track builds. Just the ticket!

"Running In The Dark" sets the tone with Ruth Royal emanating soul by the kilo before "Abandon" ups the poignant stakes with a deeper, string-struck slice of rolling magic. Deeper again we hit the star-gazing vapour trails of "Cold Love" before signing out with one of the most touching tracks Harry and Jack have ever done; "Pacific". Time to make some waves!

Review: Ed:it is now on part two of his Silhouettes album series of EPs and this one is even better than the last, with four cuts that straddle rhythmic, stylistic and sub-genre boundaries. This man has such a rich sense of vibrancy to his productions and it really shines through here. From the soulful yet hip-hop 'Undertone' featuring Rider Shafique to 'Slate Grey' featuring Technimatic, the end result on this release is always a combination of grit and funk, of basses that pulsate but do so with purpose and sophistication, of proper D&B that tells a story more complex than pure hedonism. Our favourite is 'Broken Dawn', a steppy rendition of force, frequencies and fantastic production. Epic work.

Review: And the Shogun album heat just keeps on coming... Fresh from launching Ed:It's album series, Friction's label flings Document One's debut upside our features. And it's another essential addition to our collections. As an act renowned for covering the spectrum and subverting the styles, the album format is perfect for the Oxford duo as they guide us through the spectrum... Launching with sing-along sunny-side jungle ("Shutdown") and closing with epic Sigma-esque gospel business ("Newborn") they pack every shade and style in between from soothing chime-laced deepness ("Temporal"), introspective soulful steppers ("Fortitude") and absolute grizzlesome grit ("Holy Moly") A highly accomplished debut album.

Review: Ed:it has been away for a while and, based on the quality of this release, he's spent the majority of that time locked away in the studio, getting busy and building beats. This EP is the first part of a forthcoming LP and it's absolutely blown us away, with all four cuts resonating on multiple levels in a manner not many artists can pull off these days. With a distinct sense of layered funk, Ed:it has pulled out all the stops with four dancefloor cuts that still pack sophistication and soul. 'Dayz' is possibly our favourite, it's too hard to tell, but its double-bass enthused, low-frequency shakedown certainly makes it a strong contender.

Review: Shogun dream duo Technimatic's third album is here. Without a doubt one of the biggest and most hotly anticipated releases that 2019 is likely to see, Through The Hours is another herculean collection of rolling liquid cuts, atmospheric jungle and slower, steppier numbers. It's vintage Technimatic, basically, and 'Through The Nightfall' featuring Jono McCleery is the perfect example: luscious, deep, smooth as can be and so, so well produced. 'Goodbye Kiss' takes the cake for us, though, with a stereotypically euphoric introduction that drops down into sublime D&B - this is the genre at its best. Make sure you check this - you'd be stupid not to.

Review: Rising up from SGN:LTD, Monrroe makes his debut on Friction's main label Shogun Audio with the bright and breezy soulful roller "You Got Me". Featuring the raw urgent vocals of Hybrid Minds' mate Alexa Harvey, there's a barbed undercurrent and realness throughout , giving the track a powerful emotional uplift as Monrroe's warm beats drive the message home. We hope we'll be hearing more from the Bristol vibesmith on Shogun very soon...

Review: Was A Be is one of the most exciting talents in D&B. Formerly a duo but now a solo project, Fabio has stepped up his game immensely for this release and made evident the source of his inspirations in 90s hardcore and rave flavours. 'Tell Me' is a bouncing, stabby halftime cut that smacks of juke or hardcore, its off-beat stance injecting a real sense of character and simply pleasure. 'Move' is more dancefloor orientated, you'll recognise the sample and you'll definitely want to dance - shout-out to the rave piano. The title track - Overstep - is luxurious, rolling funk off-set by glitched synth stabs and tidal ambience. We're predicting this tune will be a dancefloor hit for sure - get it here first.

Move - (4:55) 170 BPM
Review: Was A Be, a regular on both Shogun Audio as well as Critical Music, is back on Shogun for a fiery little single in their signature style. This is a Rockwell-esque stomper that employs one of the most widely recognizable samples in dance music and to be honest, it's not quite clear how much it cost to license that. Either way, we're not complaining because we a love a pummelling beat and rave piano like anyone else and Was A Be has nailed their execution here. The bassline is probably the highlight though, a murky, wobbling monster that shifts and changes each bar. Rockwell and Sam Binga must be proud but also slightly worried - Was A Be are coming for them.

Review: Cruising in the vapour trails of their "Vision" EP earlier this year, Shogun's GLXY return with another four track excursion that runs their emotionally charged gamut. "Infinite" (with Zero T) is a real zone chaser with big breeze pads and the assuring dulcets of Solah, "Revision" sits at a refreshing seven minutes while flexing an alluring vocal and devilish machine funk drop and "Discourse" rolls with such a sultry feel it's hard not to compare to a young Perez. Finally we hit the title track where a swung step which mutates into a pretty gnarly techy beast as the journey develops. One of their most accomplished and comprehensive EPs to date.

Review: Following on from last year's incredibly popular instalment, Shogun Audio have brought back Point of Origin for a third time. This series emphasises the rolling, minimal-ish side of the scene from some younger, more hungry producers and boy, is it a good formula. Exemplifying this is Revaux with 'Ibex', probably the nastiest tune on the album and arguably the best, as its crunching bass tabs inject fantastic groove. Rizzle and Malaky add something more sultry with 'Solstice' and 'Requiem', the former focusing on the vocals of Sydney whilst the latter opts for a more instrumental roll-out. Gerra & Stone represent the old guard amongst the newbies, holding up their end with a growling amalgamation of low-frequency force. This is an exquisite album of D&B, with every corner covered and every flavour recognizable - special props going to Shogun for supporting new talent as well.

Slamming himself into the centre of a much wider D&B map than some assume he's known for, the opus stretches from springy bass riff elastic on the opener "Where Is The Sun" right through the grunting glitch finale "Enemy". In between we're treated to thundering vocal drama on "Out Of Place", sci-fi soul on "Said", dreamy Huntemann-style techno on "Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants" and savage headbanger wizardry on "Adrenaline" with Hacktivist... "Junction" is all about the emotional power with its evocative vocal and touching chord progressions, "Nevermind It" flips the vibe with contrast as we're treated to a naked subby two-stepper before "Wander Away" takes us on an all-out soul juggernaut that tips its hat towards the Breakbeat Era style of vocal jazz-tinged drum & bass. Finally we have the grumbling bass stepper that Ed:It teased us with earlier this month: "Kovacs". All bases covered, there's a strong argument to start calling Ed:It Edward Winnerhands here. A very strong argument.

Kovacs
Kovacs - (5:01) 174 BPM
Review: "Kovacs" is Scavoks in reverse. Scavoks in Welsh means 'absolute banger mate'. Coincidence? No, just something we've just made up because when the music's this good it hypes up itself. Teased ahead of his four track "Junction" EP, "Kovacs" is a grainy, heads-down stepper with a springy sense of momentum to the drums and a gurgling bass that's up there with DLR or Skeppy in its lean-but-direct energy and funk. An understated and uncompromised way to introduce his biggest EP on the label to date; ED:IT's on a ninja mission right here.

Some People - (4:34) 172 BPM Hot
Who's There (feat Jerome Thomas & Mr Porter) - (5:30) 58 BPM
Review: This entire EP is stunning, softly singing to the Shogun signature sound of rolling, liquid tech. Setting the tone for the release we start with 'Empire' and we just love Mr Porter's voice, it's just so effortlessly smooth, it nestles beautifully within this lulling track, gorgeous piano, echoing drips and warm sub. 'Forma' takes us to slightly darker planes, with a creepy manipulation on the vox and a low, slowing moving vortex of a b line. 'Some People' has a melancholy vibe, with classic samples and a deep sub, while 'Who's There' is all about the vocal, and it is just divine, juxtaposed light shimmers and dark twisted tones. Trust us, you need this release in your life.

The Evening Loop (Was A Be remix) - (4:56) 58 BPM
Review: Shogun soul soldiers Technimatic unleash the parts to some of their best tracks and share them with kindred rolling spirits. The results speak for themselves... Break adds a little dark Brizzle magic to the lads' already on-point west country homage, LSB flips "Parallel" into a seven minute rising feels-lifter while Perez licks up a little switch in the kicks on the bluesy Jono McCleery-fronted "Hold On A While" and Fracture tears "Parallels" a new one with his cutty/shutty break-rattling refix. Complete with two heavy VIPs from Technimatic themselves on red marbled vinyl and you've got yourself a winner.

Portal EP
My Nu Leng - "Portal" - (4:55) 174 BPM Hot
My Nu Leng/Friction - "Jigsaw" - (4:09) 172 BPM
My Nu Leng - "Senses" (feat. Iyamah) - (4:55) 65 BPM
My Nu Leng/SpectraSoul - "The Terrace" - (4:14) 172 BPM
Review: My Nu Leng are the guys right now, it doesn't matter what bass genre you reside in, everyone respects them. Since the rumours of the release started circulating it's has been something the dnb family have been looking forward to, and as the tracks started to surface there have been rumblings on the forums that this is one of Shogun's best releases for some time, we'll let you judge that for yourselves. 'The Terrace' see the lads join forces with the hugely talented SpectraSoul and the result is unsurprisingly a tough and techy, half time work of art. Partnering with label boss Friction sees a more dancefloor led direction with a thundering mutated sub at the helm, surrounded by crashing drums and catchy vocal. The lead track 'Portal' is a hard hitting and a complete smasher, with killer drones and well-crafted drum patterns, it's a big one. But our favourite track of the EP has to be 'Senses' for a start Iyamah's voice is stunning, but secondly it's just a perfect balance of soft, melodic blissfulness and hard, aggressive grit.

Bristol
Bristol (Break remix) - (4:52) 174 BPM
Review: Talk about best man for the job. Charlie Break, while not Bristol by birth, represents the exciting sound and energy that still emanates from one of the UK's most exciting cities. Loose, rattling, rolling with a latent funk and jazziness - Break has consistently delivered the vibes Technimatic were celebrating with the original tune. Naturally he's done them proud with a switch in the lower end hook and a rugged set of drums. Precision reversion.

Review: Shogun young bucks Pola and Bryson find their way back into our lives with their second EP of the year. Once again it's four tracks. Once again it's deep, restrained and covers a lot of bases. Once again you'll be hyping up crowds and wooing up your lover... "Delphic Underworld" is a heads-down hypnotiser, "Unsaid" is a soft-focus vocal cut that makes you feel all mushy inside, "Hyperborean" reveals a much darker underbelly to the UK duo with its groaning bass tones while "Mind Seasons" closes with a weave of drifting pianos and subtly sinister bass.
