Review: Rumours have been rife on this for well over two years now. Refusing to hurry as much as he refuses to compromise, Rockwell has taken his time and crafted one of the most distinctive, unique bass music albums: Obsolete Medium. Referencing ghetto-tech, classic hardcore (rave and punk) and formative jungle, every track, even the skits, justifies its place: from the torch-raising Banks-style leftfield ballad "Faces" through to the toxic waste bass and paranoia of "Guts/Bloods/Sex/Drugs" by way of the unadulterated rave mischief of "Please Please Please (Play This On The Radio)" and cosmiche bass of "Technoir", the whole album is detailed, precision articulated and full of surprises. Far from obsolete.

Review: Friction knows how to throw a party... Their "100" celebrations started in March and they're still going strong three months later! A chance for the label's artists and friends to stretch their skills and signatures, there's been some really exciting, subversion work throughout the series. This final piece in the puzzle is no exception; "Fourward" deliver their funkiest track to date, Karma gets all soulful, Total Science get all drifty and ethereal while Break simply reminds us why we love him. All four cuts glistening with long-lasting gold, Shogun can carry on celebrating their 100th release for as long as they like as far as we're concerned.

Review: Shogun soldier Sergeant Ford steps up with four more heavyweight slapshots: sitting somewhere between tech and jump-up, "Let It Out" is a militant march into the coldest frontiers of the known D&B galaxy, "Ionize" takes us deeper into tech territory with a Phace style militancy while "Caution" is the ultimate sandpaper jam, all scuffy and coarse with distorted data spikes and sudden drops into deeper, stripped back dynamics. Finally we hit "Transpose" where Joe returns to the more cosmic, funkier side he showed off on "Time Is Limited" earlier this year. Full spectrum vibes ahoy.

The Searching (feat Emmy J Mac) - (5:09) 174 BPM Hot
Dance - (3:57) 172 BPM
Review: Fresh from appearing on their awesome Point Of Origin album, Karma (now a fully signed member of the Shogun family) lays down his debut single that expresses both sides of his prowess: "The Searching" is the emotional vocal number with enough grit to keep the D&B gangsters happy while "Dance" is a straight up physical tech fest that nods towards his label mates Joe Ford and Icicle. Comparisons don't come any bigger.

The Storm (feat Linguistics) - (4:07) 172 BPM Hot
Mashed - (4:52) 172 BPM
Review: Unstoppable Austrian powerhouse Fourward do the damage once more: "The Storm" sees them teaming up with Friction's MC of choice for a shadowy tear-out that avoids neuro's dramatic dynamics and retains a certain sense of restraint throughout. "Mashed" has a stronger techno feel to it thanks to the use of FX and sonic manipulation as the main riff. Fourward have dropped nothing but unadulterated heaviness since singing to Shogun, this single does well to show more complexity and depth to their output.

Review: 12 years deep, 100 releases strong, Friction's Shogun imprint continues to spread the strong words with what's shaping up to be a very exciting series of exclusives. For the first EP we hit paydirt from the off as Ulterior Motive play the consummate robot charmers on "Radian". Cousins in crime Icicle and Proxima follow with a dagger-sharp tete-a-tete two-stepper while Technimatic provide essential contrast with the rainbow soul "Transference". Finally Alix Perez returns to Shogun for a cheeky minimal twist of Friction and Fourward's "Battle Scars". Gold on gold on gold, Shogun aren't messing around with their 100 series.

Review: Joe Ford is one of those producers who manages to tie up sound design with hard-hitting beats to create the type of noise that'll rip through the fabric of existence. Exclusively signing to the biggest cult label in the business, Shogun, in 2013, Joe has made it his mission to produce increasingly heavy UK neurofunk since his early days at Bad Taste and Med School. This EP shows just how many bad habits he's picked up while touring with Noisia. If nasty's what you like, this little beauty is right up your darkened nightmarish alley.

Review: What a year it's been for Shogun Audio: albums from Spectrasoul and Rockwell, new signing Karma, the epic Point Of Origin collection and killer singles from every artist on the roster. Here they wrap up the year with 34 bangers, blissers and blunderbusses. If you've been following the label you'll know just how heavy this weights in bass gold. If not, it's the best possible place to play catch up. From the Jenna G-fronted Submorphics chiller "The Divine" and the gospel-level heaven of Spectrasoul's "Shelter" to the much darker, thunderous slammers such as Friction and Icicle's "Crucifix", Fourward's "Exile" and Calyx & TeeBee's gamechanging remix of Spor's "Aztec", this is a spotless sonic calling card for the label and its many multifaceted talents.

Review: Fresh from signing exclusively to Shogun Audio, Ed:It justifies his position on the Team Assassin with four rush-whittled rollers. "Pathways" is loaded with ghostly vocal textures and structured around a super sharp two-step, "Viewpoint" is a much bulkier affair with detailed drum work that's produced and positioned so well it sounds like your own personal drummer sitting right beside, in front and behind you. "Night Creeper" takes us deeper into the darkness with the careful lyrical guidance of Linguistics. Finally we climax to the techy rolls of "All Away". Penned with the help of Pennygiles, it's a smart way to end a sharp EP.

Shelter (VIP mix) - (5:18) 57 BPM Hot
Review: The second single to land ahead of Spectrasoul's highly-anticipated sophomore set The Mistress, "Shelter" emanates the duo's most sensitive, touching sides. Leaning heavily on a woozy half beat, full focus on placed on Lily's yearning, heart-torn vocals. D&B doesn't get any more emotional than this. Remix-wise Two Inch Punch lays down a darker, barbed beats twist with a treacle-thick slo-mo stomp while Spectrasoul themselves jump on the VIP with a 170 refix that's tailored for prime time floor flattening. The full package.

Review: The concept behind Friction's Vs series is simple: hook up with as many mates in the studio as possible and write straight-up floor-flatteners. No theme, no pretention, just talented producers working together and playing off each other's strengths. Following epic co-labs with the likes of Icicle, Technimatic and Total Science comes the fattest edition yet as the BBC broadcaster teams up with Dimension (hooky and euphoric), Prolix (outrageously nasty and techy), Metrik (unabashed evangelism with a very well-known vocal hook) and Ulterior Motive (old school references wearing new school armour). Each one repping all player's finest attributes, Friction has brought out the best in his peers... And his own work. Essential.

Review: It's taken Birmingham-based duo Spectrasoul three years to make the follow-up to their promising debut album, Delay No More, but it seems to have been time well spent. The Mistress is a pleasingly varied set, rooted in their deeper, more melodious take on D&B, but blessed with a range of other influences. "Hot Head, Rock Bed", for example, sounds like vintage James Blake, while "More To Give" - featuring the soulful tones of vocalist Tamara - expertly blends half-step rhythms with luscious modern soul. They even go experimental and gnarly on the frankly quite odd "Kutchi". For all the twists and turns, they've not forgotten their roots, and The Mistress also contains a number of straight-up D&B rollers that should appease DJs and fans alike.

Review: Their first new material since their evergreen debut album Desire Paths, Shogun duo Technicolour and Komatic deliver four breezy rollers in time for the warmer months. "Secret Smile" is all about Lucy Kitchen's arresting delicate vocal while "Dirty Hands" takes us deeper into Reese territory with its surging bass and ghostly vocal echoes. Deeper again we hit the title track "Flashbulb", a reflective halftime stepper with another instantly infectious vocal texture. Bringing us to sweet, string-soaked steppy finale, "Remember You" pushes us further into the D&B cosmos with a timeless, almost progressive feel that wouldn't have gone amiss around 10 years ago. Stunning through and through; Technimatic can do no wrong right now.

Review: Document One dropped their debut album on Shogun Audio last year and it was packed full of wicked dancefloor anthem, as well a a number of liquid and jungle cuts. Anamorphic is their first outing since then and it's gone down the heavier route whilst also incorporating some junglist tones, a wicked combination that represents the diversity present on Friction's label. 'Rave Culture' exemplifies that best, with a ferocious breakbeat and chopped up vocals combining to make a monstrously heavy and catchy club-focused riddim. Lovely stuff.

Review: Everyone's favourite collaborative duo Technimatic - Technicolour and Komatic in case you hadn't heard - have returned to Shogun Audio to release their latest of their heart-soaringly beautiful brand of D&B. "Like A Memory" has legendary vocalist Pat Fulgoni crooning a heartfelt love song while rolling drums and a big, woozy Reese works its magic on the low-end frequencies. "Like A Memory" takes a fresh approach with crisp, erratic drum patterns and bright, sparkling atmospherics above clipped vocals and big piano vamps. A totally gorgeous release that every self-respecting drum & bass fan and secret romantic needs to own.

INeedU/1_2_3_4
INeedU - (5:23) 86 BPM
1_2_3_4 - (4:43) 87 BPM Hot
Review: One of drum & bass' true innovators, Rockwell spends his time wisely over at Shogun Audio creating only the best messed-up beats from a mind-bendingly diverse spectrum of influences. "INeedU" is a skitterish firefly of a track, complete with hyped-up ADD beats stolen from a Rave mixtape circa '93 and samples from every corner of his record collection. "1_2_3_4" features harsher than harsh pads throughout, creating a hard techno blast through the neon wormhole of Rockwell's D&B fever fit. More Bangface than Sun and Bass, it's an amazing mental breakdown of a tune that somehow works itself out into quite the little mover. Be prepared for a scare.

Review: In their official biography, Technimatic describe their particular take on musically rich liquid D&B as "hyper-coloured". In many ways, it's an apt description. Certainly, there's a baggy vibrancy to this belated debut album, which is gloriously breezy and deliciously soulful from start to finish. There's an almost horizontal feel to the duo's classic blends of vintage jungle rhythms, drifting vocals - most notable on the beautiful "Looking For Diversion", featuring the folksy voice of Lucy Kitchen - twinkling pianos, undulating strings and sun-bright chords. This kind of liquid jungle is always eminently listenable, but Andy Powell and Peter Rogers' particular take on the style is more cultured and mature than most. As a result, Desire Paths is an impressive and hugely enjoyable body of work.

Review: Technimatic (Technicolour and Komatic, for those who've been sleeping under a rock) have been a jewel in the Shogun crown for nearly two years, pushing the boundaries of soulful and rolling drum & bass. Unlike their peers, the focus with these two UK-based producers is to create beauty as well as dancefloor-ready anthems, giving the scene a much-needed lift and crucially, making those hands reach up to the sky. Featuring both the original and radio edits of "Night Vision" and the gorgeously slow-burning beauty of "Chasing A Dream" which drops into a deeper-than-deep roller. These guys never disappoint, grab this now.
