Review: Dialect follows in the footsteps of other underground artists such as Smear, Voidloss and Lag with a release on Singularity. Despite this somewhat flippant title, make no mistake that I Am Happy is the work of a serious, weighty artist. He moves from the searing bass and broken beats of "Hentam" and "Jakmamasitohlepojmenovat" into the dubbed out, static techno of "Jakot" and into harder tracks such as "Remidsmeanorangejuice" before moving into smoky downtempo sounds on "Comet". However, no matter what style Dialect focuses on the same detailed, inventive approach applies throughout, making I Am Happy one of the most impressive techno albums of 2019.

Review: Don't ask us how to pronounce his name, but if you want a tip on UK producer Mslwte's sound - its killer! The Subsekt/Noize Facility boss serves up a captivating full length on Singularity Recordings. Following on from the last release from Derlich, presented on this album is a strong connection to rave and warehouse UK techno sounds of the late 90's. Plus, elements of Birmingham techno, IDM, Industrial and dark ambient. It's not all completely serious and po-faced either, there is some tongue in cheek, playful punk attitude in there too. Mslwte definitely has his own sound: and this is exactly why he is on Singularity Recordings. From moments of freeform electronica like "Corporation Slave", brutalist epic "Two Fingers" (reminiscent of early LFO or Speedy J), the tunnelling techno onslaught of "Euphrynichus Amanica" (for something more straight ahead) or the broken and contorted rage of "In Context".

Review: Never one to use a succinct title when a dramatic one is available, Voidloss starts his latest release with the impossibly grandiose sounding "A Field Of Lavender To Lose Hope". The sonic approach is much earthier, with tough, distorted drums and sheets of earsplitting noise somehow rising through the impenetrably dense rhythms. "He Crawls Inside My Mind" is based on a relatively similar approach, albeit with a more dancefloor-based sound. From there on in, the South African producer allows melodies to glisten and twinkle amid his crunchy, distorted rhythms. Dreamy textures seep through the harsh framework of "Self Revelation Is Annihilation Of Self" and "Until The Lights Have All Gone Out" is cloaked in eerie, haunting FX.

Review: The mysterious Derlich appears on Singularity for the label's second techno appointment. The mood is tense and distorted throughout, with "I Never Promised You A Rose Garden" unleashing an all-out fury from the off. The continuation of the same track travels into straighter techno territories whilst retaining enough grit to blow the speakers up, whereas "Triangulation" is a straight-up, bald-faced floor punisher - one of the most furious pieces of music we've heard in a while. Casual Violence's remix of "Triangulation" is near beatless and engulfed in a sea of drones and sonic landscapes but "Fading Memory" closes the EP with another hefty portion of stop-start techno destruction...certified TIP!

Review: The latest edition of the Singularity series sees LAG delivering a relentless hard techno release. Thankfully, it does not follow the linear, banging approach; "Applied Mechanics" revolves around a pounding industrial rhythm, but buried deep inside the arrangement is a lone vocal sample. "Proving Grounds" is also cut from a similar cloth and its clanging drums house a bleating riff and this time a meaner vocal. "The Snarl" sees LAG depart from straight 4/4s and its loose chain mail percussion, coupled with a stepping rhythm has echoes of Traversable Wormhole. Voidloss delivers two remixes of "Applied Mechanics", which are hewn from crashing metallic drums and paranoid sounds.

Review: It's heartening that the move back towards hard techno has focused on Birmingham and occasionally Detroit rather than the dead-end loop sound of the late 90s. Happily, Nonamaka takes inspiration from these classic approaches on Chaos. "Tangled Cravings" is a hell for leather slice of dense Birmingham techno, somewhat less oppressive than early Surgeon and Regis, but still not to be underestimated. "Solitude of Silence" and the Voidloss remixes of "Silence" and "Cravings" are more in keeping with modern sounds thanks to their stepping rhythms and lunging basslines, but the release highlights are "Impure Desire" and "Look with Fear", the kind of distorted kick drum-led analogue techno that Jeff Mills excelled at during the early to mid-90s.

Review: If you were to somehow find yourself being hunted deep within a Congolese jungle, Voidloss' One Breath Dispels The Limits Of Earth EP would soundtrack your escape from the heart of darkness. The footage attached to the "Diaphanous Fever Of Dreams" montage would be the preparation for battle - eyes blackened, red headband and camouflaged upper torso primed for a stealthy face off with an invisible enemy - if it bleeds we can kill it. Armed with only a USMC combat knife and commando senses, "Scar Glamour" plays to the flickering silhouettes that dance above. The Fifth Book" meanwhile soundtracks a ritualistic shadow game as you become one with the jungle and the tortured screams of your former team come in the form of "Rain Down On The Soul" before you extract bloody vengeance in an epic human vs predator showdown!

Review: The greatest thing about the new wave of techno producers is that the best ones feel unrestrained by genres, tempos or rhythmic structures. Rory St John is a perfect example: on Epoch, the Dublin producer flirts with the kind of abstract electronic nuances that Autechre are known for. "Mechanical Prayer" is a menacing glitch-hop arrangement pushed to the edge, while "Femme B" sees droning frequencies convulsing over shredded metallic drums. Makaton provides a fittingly skewed and splintered take on "Femme B", but there is another, more direct side to St John's approach: "Time Overdrive", with its breathy sytnhs and loose leaf percussion provides a perfect balance between classic Detroit techno and modern Berlin sounds, while "Noughtsmith" applies the splintered, distorted approach of "Femme B" to a peak time arrangement.

Review: Digital label Singularity provides the platform for mutual appreciation between South African producer Voidloss and Casual Violence, with each producer reworking two of his peer's tracks. The Casual Violence version of "Realisation Of Mind Fractures" suggests the listener may be in for a softer than expected experience, with rolling breakbeats underpinning a repetitive chant sample. That illusion is quickly shattered by Voidloss' granite beat and firing percussive version of Casual Violence's "Briefly Sexual" and the dense, metallic screeching and industrial eeriness of Casual Violence's version of Voidloss' "Simple Things For Simple Minds". The second Voidloss take on "Briefly Sexual", where shredded metallic drums are merged with Gothic vocals, confirms that intensity is the prevalent mood.

Review: The list of techno producers making dancefloor shy music may be growing daily, but few have managed to match 'Motion Departure' for rekindling the magic of early 90s ambient. The title track and 'The Seventh Opinion' encapsulate all that was great about that golden period for downtempo music, with ethereal chords and sensuous strings unfolding over crisp breaks, and eerie synths ensuring that there's not a whale sound to be heard anywhere. Voidloss delivers versions of both 'Departure' and 'Opinion' that stay faithful to the original tracks - although the Paradise Beats version of 'Departure' also brings thundering Chicago claps to the equation - while Blind Summit returns to the present day with the droning techno of 'Ciclosporin'.
