Soma

Soma Records, founded by Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle, also known as the techno duo Slam, is one of the world's leading independent electronic dance music labels. Established in Glasgow, Scotland in 1991, Soma has been consistently releasing great music for over three decades. The label has gained worldwide recognition for its early works of renowned artists like Jeff Mills, Dave Clarke, Funk D’Void, and Silicone Soul’s iconic track "Right On Right On". It also released the original vinyl version of Daft Punk's track "Da Funk" along with other notable contributions to the electronic dance music scene.

Slam Presents Exhibit 3
Various
Essentia - "Floor Control" - (6:14) 134 BPM
Review: The Exhibit series aims to showcase emerging artists who operate at the raw end of the techno spectrum. While not a new act, label owners Slam get the ball rolling with their own "Exhibit 3", which revisits the raw, jacking sound of their Snapshots release. EJA's "Detachment Theory" represents a more contemporary take on underground techno. Led by a pumping, heads-down groove and relentless, doubled-up claps, it also features mysterious synth builds. Similarly atmospheric sounds inhabit Skjöld's "Stearic Acid" - but on this occasion, they are woven into a stripped back, percussive groove. Favouring a more abrasive direction, ANNĒ's "Keinlicht" revolves around a visceral rhythm and ominous synth lines, echoing vintage Steve Bicknell.

Vaguada Costera - (5:25) 133 BPM
Review: Soma opens its 2024 account with a heads-down debut EP from Diego Oroquieta. "Sabor Mango" starts the release in hypnotic mode, as wave upon wave of chords build and ebb over a dense, rolling groove. "Vaguada Costera" follows in a similar vein, with intense, layered textures unravelling over a slamming rhythm. In contrast, "Jinete sin Cabeza" focuses on a stripped back approach, as Oroquieta drops a driving, metallic rhythm. Rounding off the release in style is "Cuerpo Endomorfo". Centred on tough drums and a relentless groove, augmented by dramatic drops, this combination makes for a lean and highly effective club techno track.

Mirante (Oscar Mulero remix) - (5:21) 134 BPM Hot
Review: Norbak aka Artur Moreira follows two killer Eps on Soma last year with another fine release for the label. The tile track is especially distinctive, with Moreira combining a rolling tribal groove with multi-layered textures that flow and ebb over the dense drums. "Mirante" is more overt, as Norbak drops a pounding, industrial groove that's populated by niggling percussive elements. "Direction Towards Chaos" sees him opt for a similar approach, with a lean, stepping rhythm that takes influence from the Regis school of angular techno. Soma has also tapped two of Europe's best producers for remixes: Oscar Mulero lends "Mirante" some added weight thanks to the use of insistent filters, while Lewis Fautzi strips back the title track, turning it into a dark, peak-time banger.

Review: Soma celebrates its 600th release with a debut on the label from Optic Nerve aka Keith Tucker. This side project is focused more on deep techno than Tucker's signature electro sound as Aux 88, and Far Away is a mesmerising trip through Detroit sounds. The title track, with its hissing percussion and spaced out synth lines, provides the basis for ponderous vocals, while on "Channel Z", Tucker fuses rolling 808s with frosty pads and a snaking bass. "Techno Programming" is the most club-centred groove, with a menacing low end and dubbed out claps at its centre, while Motor City act Strand inject some machine-led soul into their version of "Techno Programming".

Epidemic Of Wellness - (5:19) 134 BPM
Review: Lewis Fautzi continues his long relationship with Soma on State Of Pressure. This is an expertly crafted big room techno release; the title track centres on a pounding drum pattern, with phased filters and a one-note riff a constant throughout the arrangement. "Epidemic of Wellness" opts for a slightly more nuanced sound, as a dense, tribal rhythm provides the basis for repetitive stabs and soaring, filtered riffs. Soma has also tapped two emerging producers as remixers: N?rbak turns the title track into a more linear, streamlined rhythm, while Temudo's version of "Wellness" focuses on a frazzled electro bass and busy, nagging percussion.

Save The Energy EP
Easy Pace - (5:33) 134 BPM
Review: Roll Dann follows last year's Secrets on Soma with this propulsive affair. Clearly, he's not following the advice in the EP's name: the title track resounds to compressed, dense drums and hissing percussion, while on "Mago", he ups the tempo for the kind of high-octane percussive rhythm and pounding kicks that wouldn't sound at home on a Space DJz record. On "Easy Pace", he doesn't quite slow down, but the groove is more fluid and less militant-sounding, which he achieves through the use of layered percussion and eastern sounding synths. "Crash Birth" marks a shift in focus again as Roll Dann ups the pace to deliver a relentless, steely percussive workout.

Review: Having released on labels like Clergy and Planet Rhythm,Temudo dropped his debut release, Context for Soma last year to huge acclaim. This follow up EP is sure to elicit a similar response. "Tough to Say" is a frenetic rolling banger, led by powerful filtered drops and pounding tribal beats. On "Cell Phones", the emerging producer opts for a similar approach, albeit with thunder claps and glitchy riffs to the fore. "At Least One Time In Your Life" sees him pick up the pace for a frenetic, steely rhythm track, while he brings the curtain down with the Millsian "Let's Treat It As Such".

Review: The sound of analogue techno re-surfaces on the latest Soma release; on the title track,Giordano drops a raw workout, its wiry rhythm resounding to electronic squiggles and warbling tones, supported by grainy kicks. On "Lumocolour", the mood is somewhat darker, with dark electronic sound scapes sweeping in over a relentless rhythm, while on "Fine Point", Giordano opts for a more contemporary-sounding approach; the drums are steely and tough, while the rhythm is stepping and rigid. On the closing track,Giordano discharges the most visceral arrangement; "1 Day Left", with its grimy electronic riffs and gated chords, is a fine slice of uncompromising club tackle.

He returns to Scottish institution Soma after the success of his first offering the Fluido Energetic EP, bringing his tough yet melancholic sound back with a new thriller. Beginning with the barrelling and austere peak time energy of "Heat Is Too Hot", as well as the shrieking doomsday war techno of "Forename" and the hypnotic euphoria of "Piangere" with its subtle trance inflections.

After Velvet (Echoplex Soleil remix) - (6:41) 131 BPM Hot
Review: As a taster for Simon Stokes aka Petrichor's second artist album, Soma delivers the rolling techno of "6EQUJ5". However, the Scottish label has been careful not to reveal too much and has also commissioned remixes of new Petrichor material. Echoplex turns "After Velvet" into an atmospheric but forceful workout, its anthem-liked chords underpinned by big-room kicks, while the talented, iconic artist Pub also delivers two interpretations of Petrichor's music. The first is a textured, ambient take on "Valdo", while Pub's version of "After Velvet" is truly special, as classical woodwind is merged with a gentle, bubbling groove to create a truly standout remix.

Review: Following the release of German producer SLV's ambient album "Berlin. A Portrait In Music", Soma has invited a powerful selection of techno producers to re-imagine a handful of tracks from the album. Setaoc Mass' steely and barrelling rework of "Dust" is geared for the capital's dank warehouse dance floors in the AM hours. Enigmatic Ukranian Stanislav Tolkachev delivers an emotive and isolated perspective of "First Day In The City" and Dutch dub techno sorcerer Conforce delivers the standout - with his cavernous and splintered perspective of "Forest Voices".

Review: Following on from the What Lies Below release last year, Kontal returns to Soma with this no-nonsense release. "Analog 10" is a stomping, pounding affair, led by relentless kick drums and bursts of acid so visceral that they will corrode sensitive ears. "Before She Died" is even heavier; the kicks and percussion are furious, and follow a linear, streamlined approach that support relentless industrial riffs. Last but by no means least is "Lynx"; redolent of Luke Slater's Planetary Assault Systems project at its most visceral, its combination of pounding kicks and gated, distorted acid licks bring this relentless release to a fitting close.

Review: Hot on the heels of last year's Diverse Fields release on Soma, Roll Dann delivers another killer EP for Slam's label. Opening track "Lexeme" combines intense tonal bleeps with a steely, powerful rhythm. Meanwhile on "Breathe", the emerging Spanish artist drops a more stream lined tribal groove, once again populated by eerie riffs, this time more robotic and austere. There's a similarly bleak approach on "Secret", but once again Dann proves that he's a distinctive artist by layering break beats under the driving groove. Last but by no means least is "The Fist"; more dense and murky than the previous tracks, it's a malevolent slice of modern club techno.

He returns to Soma with with full focus on the solo project on this fresh release, which follows up last years impressive Venus Genetrix EP. From the strobed-out adrenaline of fierce opening cut "Syenite", the heads-down warehouse style stomper "Acre" (which reaches hear acid moments of psychedelia) or the barrelling mentalist energy of the title track - Evirgen has once again delivered four cuts of raw, analogue techno that show great depth and drive.

Kepler-452 B - (6:27) 130 BPM Hot
Review: EOS Research is an anonymous project that Soma has been astute enough to sign an EP from. Based on the kind of tripped out techno that prevails on Exoplanet, rest assured that it won't be the last that we hear from them. "Kepler-442 B" resounds to booming kicks and clanging metallic riffs, but it still sounds cavernous and spaced out as it drifts off into the kind of cosmos occupied by the likes of Mike Parker. A more visceral approach prevails on "Kepler 452 B", where the pair deliver pile-driving broken beats that support tripped out trance stabs. "Kepler 62 E" is a more conventional dub techno roller and brings to a close this most impressive debut.

Review: SLV steps from the shadows again to deliver his fifth release on Soma. As on previous EPs, the focus remains on tough but funky techno. The title track sets the pace with pounding kicks, firing percussion and the meanest, most malevolent rave riffs since the heady days of vintage Joey Beltram. "Dreamscapes" sees the mysterious producer in slightly less menacing form, but its arcing acid lines and pounding kicks mean that, while somewhat more tripped out than "Reflected Light", it is still just as effective. Finally, "Unhealthy" sees SLV delve into darker, more visceral sounds than before, with broken beats and noisy, buzzing electronic riffs prevailing.
