Review: The latest release on Sonntag Morgen shows that while the world has become smaller, geographical location is still important. Xavi is from Belgrade, and while "Explanation Skip" is laden down with the kind of cold, Sahko/Sandwell District-esque bleeps that have become a staple part of modern techno sound design, the tough, slamming beats and loopy approach are rooted in the late 90s productions of Balkan artists like Umek, Valentino Kanzyani and Marko Nastic. By contrast, the Dasha Rush remix resounds to a more contemporary form of hypnotism, namely the lean functionality of Berghain. Xavi continues his unusual flirtation with techno on "Saturn Transit", where eerie chord washes and rough beats make for a refreshingly different alternative to the current narrative.

Review: Two new-school producers share the duties on Sonntag Morgen's sixth release. The Italian label has chosen wisely and Mario Campos aka Kwartz delivers two peak-time, 90s-themed tracks. "Lost Signal" is based on tough, metallic drums but features powerful pulses rising up through it, while "Tension" is a more visceral affair, with noisy kicks providing the backdrop for churning filters and screeching riffs. Oaks, who has released on labels like Mutewax and Key, provides "Solarmental", which starts deceptively deep before picking up the intensity level with machine gun claps. "That Morning Upstairs" has a similar approach; it begins with deep house melodies before Oaks drops devastatingly powerful percussive bursts.

Review: It's apt that Canadian in Berlin Mary Velo's latest release is out on a label called 'Sunday Morning' in German because the title track captures that in between time and its varying moods. It starts with atmospheric synths and niggling 303s - the accompaniment to that giddy feeling sleep deprivation sometimes brings - before a gloomy bass heralds the onset of sobriety and the mundane surroundings on the way home. The alternative, as presented here by Velo, is to keep going. She articulates this choice through the dark, loopy "MTD Locked Tool" take on the title track and the distorted kicks and drenched feedback of the apocalyptically-named "Anarchist Critique Of The Origins".
