Review: It's not the first time these European genii have worked together but this is probably the most experimental they have been with their sound so far. Ditching liquid for the washed-out, sun-soaked, sand-worn sounds of old-school dub, track one is an instant synaesthetic trip down memory lane thanks to clever sampling by MSDOS. It's a surprise then, that on the flip is a sparkling, effervescent roller from Billy Green and Severity Zero that would be welcome in any Bukem set. Both tracks have that holiday sound, it's just one is firmly rooted in Kingston, while the other has its eyes on Rio. A great soundclash.
Review: Lyon-based heavyweight Salaryman dusts off his old Tenor Saw 12" for a reggae-roasted bootleg of extreme proportions. The moment the distinctive vocals and well-sampled horn blast burst through the speakers you know this is going to cause major commotions. "When You're Lonely" takes the same vocal hook used by The Qemists a few years back. Processed with huge, body shocking reverbs and roomy production, it's the perfect lead for the juicy sub-stacked groove that follows.
Review: Fresh, rollin' breaks and roots reggae sampling signals the first track on Soul Rebel's latest signing Scott Allen's "We Nah Run". Close-knitted amens duck and weave around retro guitars as that vintage vocal moves the atmosphere into a clearer focus. A clear club banger, it's just the right balance between jungle and drum & bass to get the masses bouncing. "Toonzragga" is a more stately jungle affair, blasting those sirens and horns from the outset with dancehall beats and big soundboy bass. A mish-mash of classic effects raise a smile while the larger than life riddim keeps feet moving. Skanking crew, get ready.
