Review: Wiesbaden's Matthias Zimmermann delivers some summery feel good nu-disco and deep house on his new self-titled full length. Anyone who hasn't seen his recent Boiler Room Paris appearance has been sleeping because it is fire! The young producer has been a staple of the Sound Pellegrino roster since 2011 and his productions have just gotten better and better than this is testament to this. Highlights include the pop inflected funky house of "Martin (feat Olivia)" "Elbo" featuring DVNO who sounds like Damon Albarn and the dreamy and slow burning "Lia (feat Jay-Jay Johanson).
Review: Zimmermann has released a series of EPs on Sound Pellegrino, and one doesn't have to dig too deeply to explain the appeal of his music. The title track is a playful, melodic techno track, its rhythm lithe but forceful, those distinctive hooks somewhere between Kompakt and Derrick May. Nathan Melja's remix reminds this writer of classic Dial; the melodies have be-come more fragile and winsome, underpinned by dubby beats and tight, rasping percussion. Koyote provides a version that takes the listener back in time; rave whistles, a jittery rhythm and ghostly Detroit melodies all come together to sound like a long-lost classic from the early 90s.
Review: Hold up - Sound Pellegrino crew inside! Number three in their Sound Pellegrino Presents SNDPE series and as per usual, it's jam packed full of killers from both label casuals and loosely affiliated clan members. As the name suggests, the sound is inherently raw and gritty, direct from the gutter and packing enough punch to blow your system out. House, ghetto, bass, you name it, there's something in here for everyone and if you're into the Night Slugs end of the spectrum, then look no further! Toyc's "Analog Drums" is particularly gnarly thanks to its gritty backbone, but it's all highly alluring and comes heavily recommended. Cop it, son!
Review: Sound Pellegrino comes through correct once again with Crystal, and reaffirms their status as one of the most interesting and successful independent label in the game. They've had a lot of big names, Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990 to name a few, but Crystal is bound to make a name for himself after something so alluring and funky as "Get It!?" featuring Teki Latex, and the bouncy electro swirls of "Telephonic" - a real lesson in 808 flexing. "Construction" is another full-blown monster and its raucous beat paradigms just jump out the mix and into your cortex, whilst "Crystal Forest" sounds like a techno replacement for Nintendo's Zelda series. TIP!
Review: A very strong release from Sound Pellegrino, as French producer Maelstrom follows up big tunes for Dirtybird and Boys Noize Records with this trio of electro-bass gold. "USSR" is a deliciously warped mix of huge industrial kicks matched with shifting acapella shots and some charging synth work, while "House Music" ups the bpms a little and rocks a minimal booty bass beat and hazy Detroit stabs. Staying on a Miami tip, "Pool Chicks" recalls recent tunes from Mele and Canblaster with a delirious set of arpeggiated leads married to a thick minimal bassline and kicks.
