Matthias Zimmermann
Review: Wiesbaden's Matthias Zimmermann delivers some summery feel good nu-disco and deep house on his new self-titled full length. Anyone who hasn't seen his recent Boiler Room Paris appearance has been sleeping because it is fire! The young producer has been a staple of the Sound Pellegrino roster since 2011 and his productions have just gotten better and better than this is testament to this. Highlights include the pop inflected funky house of "Martin (feat Olivia)" "Elbo" featuring DVNO who sounds like Damon Albarn and the dreamy and slow burning "Lia (feat Jay-Jay Johanson).

Burnt Glass EP
Review: We're always excited when a new Loom piece drops on our charts because we love anything that pushes genre boundaries and blurs the lines. "Burnt Glass" does exactly that, and with a pinch of acid, some heavy rave stabs and power snares, the producer gets his point firmly across; that is, he ain't into no ordinary dance loops. The same goes for "Acid Rain", a wobbling pseudo grime monster, and the bleeped-out "Hardest In The Year". Equally boundary-pushing remixes come from Le Dom, Lloyd SB and Doline.

Andeo EP
Review: Zimmermann has released a series of EPs on Sound Pellegrino, and one doesn't have to dig too deeply to explain the appeal of his music. The title track is a playful, melodic techno track, its rhythm lithe but forceful, those distinctive hooks somewhere between Kompakt and Derrick May. Nathan Melja's remix reminds this writer of classic Dial; the melodies have be-come more fragile and winsome, underpinned by dubby beats and tight, rasping percussion. Koyote provides a version that takes the listener back in time; rave whistles, a jittery rhythm and ghostly Detroit melodies all come together to sound like a long-lost classic from the early 90s.

Sound Pellegrino presents Snd pe Vol 5/Mixed By Teki Latex/Orgasmic
Various / Teki Latex / Orgasmic
Review: It's 2016 and that means a new Sound Pellegrino compilation for you, this time a handsomely mixed, ultra-packed release by Teki Latex and Orgasmic. Rather than sticking to one genre - as is the norm with the label - the boys decide to throw down a wide variety of house and techno from the usual suspects on the label. Launching techno, slithering house, and even a little bit of bass stabbings from the likes of Helix, the abominable Truncate, Air Max 97, and many others. Big and juicy for ya.

Elusive EP
Review: Having established a shared passion for 'drumless trance and broken riddims', Tiki Latex knew that Doline aka producer Maxime Prieur, belonged on his Sound Pellegrino label. This resulting single, the Elusive EP, bears testament to this musical approach with three tracks that don't conform to the current 90s retro trends - "Cus D'Amato" marries percussive crossfire with chiming ambient synth melodies not unlike Thomas Newman's 80s work, "Landeoff II" is trance, but not as we know it: all shimmering arpeggios glazing staccato beats and finally "Elusive" sees spacey 70s synthscapes evolve into slow, romantic electro-house. Powerful stuff!

Sound Pellegrino Presents SND PE Vol 4 Melodic Mechanisms
Various
Review: Sound Pellegrino's SND PE compilations to date have each offered unique windows on the world of futuristic club music. The label's fourth installment comes under the sub-title Melodic Mechanisms, and as the name suggests, it's a collection of bright club tunes with intricate structures at play under the hood. Doline's "Karidja" kicks off with a track indebted to the history of trance music, while Her Records co-founder Sudanim comes through with a Jersey Club-influenced banger in the form of "Seydou". Other highlights - of which there are many - include Chilly Gonzales and P. Morris collaborating on the hip hop slow jam "Late Visitor" and the cut-up funk of Moleskin's "Imagine".

Momentum Series Part 1 EP
Review: Ever committed to his home turf of Sound Pellegrino, Matthias Zimmerman is at it once again and this time he's kick off a new series entitled Momentum. There's certainly plenty of energy to be garnered from "Albert", complete with oddball vocal musings from a quaint English gent in amongst dirty and distorted rhythmic pressure. "Reginald" takes things a little leaner but decidedly heavier, letting a notable bass hit thud out under a more measured house jacker. "Heinrich" has a heavy filter hanging over it, but it doesn't stop the expressive acidities from worming their way out before "Gottlieb" twists into a snappy broken beat arrangement with some raw techno synth flurries thrown in for good measure.

Sound Pellegrino Presents SNDPE Vol 3: Raw Club Material
Various
Review: Hold up - Sound Pellegrino crew inside! Number three in their Sound Pellegrino Presents SNDPE series and as per usual, it's jam packed full of killers from both label casuals and loosely affiliated clan members. As the name suggests, the sound is inherently raw and gritty, direct from the gutter and packing enough punch to blow your system out. House, ghetto, bass, you name it, there's something in here for everyone and if you're into the Night Slugs end of the spectrum, then look no further! Toyc's "Analog Drums" is particularly gnarly thanks to its gritty backbone, but it's all highly alluring and comes heavily recommended. Cop it, son!

Session 1 EP
Played by: Shadow Dancer
Review: Sound Pellegrino has been doing things right. Ever since their debut release the label has set the bar pretty high, something which they've successfully seen to with each new release. This latest EP comes from newbie Track ID, who produces six tracks of bass-laden joy. Tagged simply as numbers, each production is as functional as they are funky and grooving, and like cogs in a wheel, they span different elements of the all-encompassing bass domain. Our top picks have to be "5" for its relentless swell of kicks, "3" due to its DIY-house approach, and "1" for its seductive, Omar-S-like melodies and chest-hitting low-ends. Class.

Sound Pellegrino Presents SND PE Vol 2: Crossover Series
Various
Review: What a line-up. Featuring the likes of Bok Bok, Teki Latex, Helix & Hrdvsion and Surkin & Todd Edwards, this compilation is an essential purchase. From claustrophobic, dead-of-night meanderings to Miami-highway cheesefests and back again, there's no style to pin down here, just a ton of excellent tunes vying for your attention. All the way from dark, insular beats to New Order/Depeche Mode-esque arms-in-the-air whirlwinds (Crystal & Ikonika - thank you), there isn't a time you'll be bored, and that's a guarantee. Get this now.

Sound Pellegrino Presents SND PE Vol 1
Various
Review: It's hard to believe that's it's been four years since Sound Pellegrino was born, kicking and screaming, from the ashes of Institubes. In that time Teki Latex and DJ Orgasmic have consistently delivered a totally amazing, but eclectic, range of music from all sorts of names big and small. In short, they provide a very French take on all forms of bass music, and this comp is a great snapshot of their approach. Highlights include the French touch-referencing "Rick", the raw warehouse, er, house of "RMS (To Steve)", the Detroit-ish electro-flecked "Heat" and the demented tropicala of ""Jeffrey". Boom!

Get It EP
Review: Sound Pellegrino comes through correct once again with Crystal, and reaffirms their status as one of the most interesting and successful independent label in the game. They've had a lot of big names, Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990 to name a few, but Crystal is bound to make a name for himself after something so alluring and funky as "Get It!?" featuring Teki Latex, and the bouncy electro swirls of "Telephonic" - a real lesson in 808 flexing. "Construction" is another full-blown monster and its raucous beat paradigms just jump out the mix and into your cortex, whilst "Crystal Forest" sounds like a techno replacement for Nintendo's Zelda series. TIP!

What Is Guru
Review: Renaissance Man's electro-swung house music is simply inimitable. The duo have gathered plenty of attention in the last few years and "What Is Guru" promises to be their most epic work to date. Catchy, chopped-up vocals and fist-pumping beats grind away uncontrollably, but Riva Starr's remix injects a very welcomed electro bass line of the highest calibre. "Aloha" is probably the pair's best track, where harsh beats meet acidic bass lines and swirling, evaporating vocals. The dub version is even nuttier, as the drums are now hollow and spacious, leaving more room for that previously melting vocal to emanate and soar over the whole track. Large!

Activate
Review: The Sound Pellegrino Thermal Team - better known as label operators Orgasmic and Teki Latex - return with more of their uniquely French take on bass music with a double header of electro infused heaters. "Activate" combines motivational rap vocals with stripped back 808s, an infectiously wonky sense of melody and a tweaked out synth line, while "I Be" is more explicit in is homage to dirty south rap, as DX7 bass and chopped and screwed vocals combine with triumphant synth horns in a gloriously retro pastiche. As if that wasn't enough, instrumentals and accapella versions are provided for those who wish to get creative with their mixing.

Meme Is The New Riddim - EP
Review: Teki Latex's Sound Pellegrino has been flirting with Bass music styles since they tapped up L-Vis 1990 for an EP a few years ago. On their newest release however, they've jumped into the murky bass pool with both feet, enlisting Finnish producer Teeth, responsible for last year's paranoia infused 140bpm terror "Shawty". "Percolator Meme" utilises his trademark sample chopping alongside wooden rhythms and intimidating bass, "Jusqu' tendresse" opts for an eski grime inspired riddim, while "Busy Crack" brings out the druggier side of the producer's oeuvre, with threadbare juke-inspired percussion and sampling barely holding it together. Inspired remixes come from Lazer Sword, who turn in a stop-start robomix of "Percolator Meme", and on-fire producer Kowton, whose raw, sparse interpretation of "Jusqu' tendresse" is our pick of an excellent EP.

USSR EP
Review: A very strong release from Sound Pellegrino, as French producer Maelstrom follows up big tunes for Dirtybird and Boys Noize Records with this trio of electro-bass gold. "USSR" is a deliciously warped mix of huge industrial kicks matched with shifting acapella shots and some charging synth work, while "House Music" ups the bpms a little and rocks a minimal booty bass beat and hazy Detroit stabs. Staying on a Miami tip, "Pool Chicks" recalls recent tunes from Mele and Canblaster with a delirious set of arpeggiated leads married to a thick minimal bassline and kicks.

Night Voyage Tool Kit EP
Review: The new Crossover Series from the Sound Pellegrino crew makes for a canny and eye opening endeavour, offering the chance for like-minded producers from different paths the chance to collaborate together with the aim of "crossing the invisible bridges of the great house music archipelago". The standard for the series is set truly high on the inaugural release that sees Alex Bok Bok Sushon team up with Tom Trago for the Night Voyage Tool Kit EP. The six tracks see Trago and Sushon deliver heavily, stripped down drum trax informed by a love of Dancemania era Chicago House. At times the results are playful; see the opening track "Pathfinder" - little more than the duo checking out how pliable the rubbery analogue tone at the core is, with drums stripped down to a hissing undercurrent. More structure is evident on the skeletal "White Type R", which slowly unfurls into compressed head jack material, though that playful sense of melody creeps through intermittently. As the EP progresses, the overarching feeling you get from this release is two producers becoming increasingly comfortable working together - see how the vocoder led "Time Master" unexpectedly bursts into a percolating 23rd century p-funk out. It's obviously just the start of much more from the duo, with Trago revealing the duo will continue their Night Voyage endeavours in some shape or form.
