Review: Glasgow's Sounds Of Lava Lava label, born out of a Subcity radio show of the same name, bring us a three-tracker from local talent Bowfingers. 'Our Love' itself is up first, a lively disco-houser with building, whoosh-y synths and a female "our love will never be the same" vocal. 'Sweet Nancy' rides more driving 4/4s and blends original and sampled vox with some fine horns and strings work, while finally 'French Stick' continues in a similar vein but is arguably the most energetic of the three, propelled as it is by a pulsing, rave-y bassline. Three solid cuts that'll keep 'em moving for sure.
Review: On his first outing on Glasgow's Sounds of Lava Lava, Beartone Records founder - and occasionally Defected contributor Bearface (real name Raj Panasa) successfully joins the dots between his usual brand of thickset house music and the kind of dusty jazz records most often found nestling in the shelves of backstreet record stores. 'Harlesden Shuffle (Dub Mix)' does a terrific job in wrapping (sampled) jazz instrumentation - hazy horns, twinkling electric piano sounds, heady vocal samples and even the odd bustling drum break - around chunky house beats and a booming, sub-heavy bassline. Panasa opts for a more elastic and vintage St Germain-influenced sound on 'French Orkestra', where heady woodwind and brass solos dance atop a classic-sounding jazz-house beat.
