Let's Break - (4:00) 129 BPM Hot
Review: Amazingly, it's been a staggering 14 years since Frank Timm dropped his debut Soundstream 12", Good Soul. Here, it gets a welcome digital version. Given its age, it's notable how good the three tracks still sound. "Good Soul", in particular, is something of a blueprint for Timm's later work; it was the first instance of his short, chopped-up samples and stuttering disco-house grooves. Even better is the jazzy "Motion", which foresaw his pioneering work with Errorsmith as Smith & Hack by four years. The techno tempo "Let's Break" - woozy, heavy and exceedingly loopy, as you'd expect from Timm - completes a classic package.

All Night
All Night - (8:33) 128 BPM Hot
Tease Me - (6:54) 123 BPM
Deeper Love - (5:44) 125 BPM
Review: The recent spate of Soundstream digital issues is a boon for anyone who likes their house heavy, loopy and discofied. It doesn't matter a jot that the material is vintage - this three-tracker first appeared on vinyl in 2010 - since it still sounds fresh (due, in part, to the fact that Frank Timm does this kind of loopy disco house better than anyone else). Choose between the jaunty, rubbery bass, deep chords and party atmos of "All Night", the stomping, strobelight disco of "Tease Me", and woozy, disco drums and deep house chords of "Deeper Love". Naturally, all three are superb.

Live Goes On
Live Goes On - (8:39) 122 BPM Hot
Rainmaker - (5:13) 125 BPM
Review: Maximising on the power to be derived from insanely catchy loops, Frank Timm's Sound Stream venture shows that working a hook over and over doesn't have to be boring in the slightest. On "Live Goes On", the fourth release in the series, the piano is ruling all over the title track, while teasing strings and shimmering manipulations dart around underneath. Still though the main informer is disco, and for all the jagged edges the groove wins out to make this some of the most vital music in the hinterland between edgy experimentalism and pure pleasure. "Rainmaker" is more overt in its love of the good old days, rocking a rich and satisfying bassline and romantic piano lick while rutting in the most insistent furrow of rhythm you could wish for.

Julie's Theme
Julie's Theme - (7:52) 122 BPM
Inferno - (7:14) 127 BPM Hot
Review: There's a feeling with Sound Stream records akin to supping on a cup of tea after a long hard winter day, so perfectly pitched and satisfying is his approach to making house music. On "Julie's Theme", there's some unabashed delay rippling going on, but still that ever-loving disco groove sits underneath in the bassline on the one and the natural hand claps. On the virtual flip, the disco is thoroughly loud and proud, with "Inferno" resplendent in searing Philly strings and slinky bass that was built for grooving. Once again, Sound Stream has delivered a simple but meaningful demonstration of house music perfection.

Freakin
Freakin' - (5:11) 127 BPM
Soul Train - (6:19) 124 BPM Hot
3rd Movement - (4:59) 125 BPM
Lollipop - (6:04) 122 BPM
Review: Having released his first Soundstream 12" some six years earlier, Frank Timm decided to dust down his now famous moniker for a surprise follow-up in 2005. As we now know, it was a wise choice. Freakin', featuring four slabs of colossal cut-up disco-house heaviness, was the 12" that firmly established his now infamous loopy, floor-friendly sound. All these years on, it still sounds fantastic. "Freakin" is amongst Timm's most instantly accessible offerings, while the string-laden "3rd Movement" remains a benchmark in sample manipulation (and, of course, a dancefloor banger to boot). The deeper, Rhodes-heavy "Soul Train" is also worth a listen.
