Review: Original Commix member Conrad Whittle returns under his Saikon alias via BCee's Spearhead and the results speak for themselves. Proper authentic foundation jungle D&B, loaded with pensive moods and tension, each cut is an instant back huncher; "Badman Can't Dance" paints a contemporary scene using colours strictly from a classic hardcore palette, "Subway Writers" rolls with dreamy charm courtesy of some of the warmest drums we've heard on Spearhead in years while "Shadows Of The Sun" whips a classic Alex Reece style vibe, laced with a perfectly measured haunting sensation. "Years Gone By" seals the deal with a lavish breakbeat and big jazz feels in every chord and majestic harp flurry. Timeless to the core, Conrad's comeback stinks of longevity. Essential.

Review: Redeyes has had a truly exceptional 2018. His recent album Broken Soul over on The North Quarter was a cross-genre masterpiece in funk, soul and. Hip-hop music that genuinely cemented his already certain position as one of the most talented compositionists in D&B. Now, he's on Spearhead Records and 'Let You Down' is Redeyes back to his roots: breakbeat-based soul music. These tunes aren't quickly digestible, throwaway commodities; they're long-form art pieces which display the top form of liquid D&B. 'Midnight Marauder' is the stand-out, a glowing piano stab gently underpinned by flowing double bass notes. Yet more genius music from the Frenchman.

Review: It's about time! Last spotted on Spearhead flexing their still-awesome debut album Holograms, Tallinn/Birmingham duo Mutated Forms deliver their largest body of work in two years. Is it worth the wait? You bet your last tiny little piece it is. "Flashbacks" is a woozy steppy cut that stutters and jumps with the unpredictability you'd expect from the longstanding duo, "Grow" is brings the soulful feels with a honeyed vocal, lilting keys and a pure growler bassline. "Avoid & Ignore" manages not only to fuse big housey disco synths with grubby bass and clam-tight two-step but its title also provides a handy self help message on how to keep enemies at bay. Finally "Narcissist" closes the deal with a classic string-soaked whirlwind nod to the power liquid golden days of 2005. Now that's what we call a flashback.

Review: Scene legend Seba is back on scene staple Spearhead Records, bringing with him four slices of music that are all effortlessly Seba. 'She Looks Real' is celestial and spacey, floating synths peppered over a steppy drum line that has a gritty, old school feel; the progression is constant and driving - what an opener. The steppy vibe carries on in 'Close To You', as the percussion creeps in as the tune evolves turning this one into a real listener, simplicity reigning supreme the whole way through. The pace is turned up a notch in 'Time Will Tell', featuring more old-school progression in the drum line, there's no cheap thrills or quick fixes and you have to really appreciate the genuine quality of the music. 'Why Can't This End' is the finisher, soaring vocals end things on a high as subtle synth rises and swirling background pads come together to build a rich texture of rolling liquid funk. This release takes things back to basics and honestly shouldn't be missed.

Review: Need For Mirrors continues to own the game with his hyper prolific, super smart and unapologetically restrained goodies as he makes his debut on Bcee's Spearhead with four more sublime jams; "Crystalline" is an exercise in uplift with its crisp arpeggio and clipped string sample, "Cassiopeia" is Joe Moses at his most delicate as he explores the ivories with introspection, "Mermaids Tail" is lavish piece of aquatic drama that sits somewhere between Seba and Klute while "Bamboo" closes on a mournful sci fi step. Need For Mirrors wins again.

Review: Bcee and Villem share out the parts of four of their many exceptional tracks with a rollcall of on point peers. Bop takes "Blacklist" to the furthest corners of the cosmos on a rocket made of pure jazz and twinkles, Alibi strip "Recharge" back and coat it in a titanium suit of armour allowing Tempza's vocals prime position in the mix, Tokyo Prose adds his soulful, dreamy piano magic to "Milestone" while "FLLN 4 U" is given a classic Zero T revision with a whole new stack of atmospherics to play with. Be on your guard.

Review: Frequent sonic sparring partners (but killer solo acts in their own rights too) UK roller conjurers Macca & Loz Contreras return to Spearhead with four stone cold charmers. "I Need You" is an instant heart-melter with a big swooping string sample and loin girding vocals, "Lost Origins" is a delicate piano primer with heaps of space for singer-of-the-moment Becca Jane Grey, "You Want Me, You Need Me" takes us on an introspective tip with heavy filters on another soul stirring sample while "Don't Give Up" brings this session to a close with lavish disco feels that aren't dissimilar to early 2000s Hospital. Beautiful.

Review: Remix klaxon: Bcee shares out the parts to his critically acclaimed fourth album Northpoint to an all-star cast of peers. LSB adds a little mystic haze to "Surfacing", Anile refixes our focus on the dreamy reverse tones of "Northpoint" while Seba provides the headiest moment of the collection as he hurls "More Then Words" into the darkest corners of the drumfunk cosmos. Elsewhere Lenzman brings his unique soul signature to "Black Sky", Monty brings the blustering breezes and barbed bass to "Had It All" before Bladerunner seals the deal with a typically sharp and sizzled twist on "Your Body".

Review: Ever the flexible soul-stirrer, Amsterdam's finest vibe merchant Nymfo returns to Spearhead with five of his most charming deep bubblers. "Crystal Clear" is a sunset anthem-in-waiting while "Time Zone" flips the coin with a deep subby rumbling rolling vibe. Elsewhere "In Transit" adds a little dubby mysticism to the EP while "Underwater Life" is a celebration all things dreamy, minimal and funky. Never sitting still creatively, Nymfo really is one of the best in the game right now. Salute!

Review: Few things have been as consistent or on-point as Bcee and Villem's Vanguard Project this year. EP after EP after EP, they've been dropping dancefloor gold of all shades and styles. This fifth volume is no exception; "U MK ME FEEL" is all about the classic break, arpeggiated instruments and swooning synth line, "Recharge" is much more of a mischievous junglised riff workout while "Fused" hypnotises us with textured cascading pitched percussion, oceanic jazzy tones and a tribal drum switch that nods at the current sound oozing from Manchester. Finally the duo settle our souls with the oceanic shimmers and uplifting thrust of "Think About". Incredible.

It's all lead up to this, however, their debut album, Under The Blue. Featuring 14 thrill-packed excursions, with highlights including the heart-warming anthem "Sins" (featuring the sweet tones of Charli Brix), the soulful mysteries of "Echoes" and the warm elegance of "Closer". High end beats.

Killer new remixes such as Pola & Bryson's subby switch of "Lost Friends", Break's spotless drums on "Confessions" xxx . Plus a few floor-melting VIPs: the relentless bass pump of "Fear Bites" and the cosmic touches to "Wears Me Down". Deluxe and demonstrative - this is a great addition to an already remarkable album.

Review: Most discerning D&B fans have been anticipating this one for years now but it's safe to say few of us had any idea just how soulful and widescreen Mutated Forms' debut album would be. From the soft-touch pianos and yearning vocal sample of opener "We Belong" it's clear the Estonian duo mean business. Highlights hang off every corner like casually baggy threads; the cosmic flutters of "Alright", the rising hype build and deep throat bass and halftime drums of "Amazonica", the overwhelming exuberance of the horns on "Revelations", the 22nd century R&B of "Heaven Sent", the list goes on. Both as singular tracks for DJs and as a whole body of work, this album really does confirm everything we've suspected of Mutated Forms for years. Exceptional.

Review: With well over 100 releases to his name, Finnish DJ Muffler has been a consistent source of rolling D&B soul since the mid-90s. Last spotted in album land with Moodswings on Spearhead seven years ago, he's returned with another all-bases romp that sits somewhere between the sublimely soulful ("Northern Lights", "Ranua", "Cosmos") to the ridiculously funky ("Joy Ride" "Stone Cold"). With occasional splatterings of trance and future tech, it's Muffler at his broadest, boldest and most confident. Essential.

Review: Not just one of drum & bass's most iconic female vocalists, but also one of the most respected... Riya's work behind the scenes goes back around 15 years. As a result she's got serious reference points, a genuine understanding of proper drum & bass and a really impressive debut album that features some of the best names in D&B. Ranging from the sci-fi soars and twinkling synths of "Misunderstanding" to the out-and-out gutter slaps of "Piece Of Me" via the soul jazz jungle lushness of "Don't You Know" and the already massive lighter-raiser "As Soon As". Released at a time when a lot of female features are popping up in D&B for all the wrong reasons, Riya is the real deal... And so is this album.

Review: Riya gets her own release. It's about freaking time. The soulful siren of the underground for ten years, there aren't many people who are better connected or more respected amongst the 'good guys' of UK, European and Brazilian drum and bass than this lady. She's a force to be reckoned with. Working with Dynamite MC, Villem, McLeod and Break on this stunner of a two-track, the beats drop hard and the bass rolls deep. But really, what did you expect? If you call yourself a drum and bass fan, pick this up as soon as your fingers stop tapping to the sample of "I Don't Need".

Review: BCee returns to the scene with his third full length LP, and yes, it's a stunner. If you enjoy intricately woven drum and bass with a deeply rooted feel (designed with the dancefloor in mind), this ticks all the right boxes. Kicking off with the beautiful and deadly "Firebox", there is no let-up in high quality sounds throughout the extensive tracklisting. BCee teams up with LSB and Rocky Nti for the stunning "River Runs Dry", Villem employs the unmistakeable voice of Frank Carter to deliver "I Believe", and the one and only SPY reaches out with the soulful and deeply rolling "It Begins With You". You could be forgiven for bagging this for the top-drawer collaborations alone but of course BCee's own music here is this release's crowning achievement.

Review: For a large percentage of drum & bass fans, Spearhead as a label can do no wrong. Years of immaculate releases all bowing to the same ethics of great sounding, great feeling music has brought them widespread love and respect. The incendiary touch of Calibre has clearly reached London-based FD's mind for "Change Please", with its clarity and perfection drawing influences from the producer while bending its own path through clever vocal sampling and sharp percussion. "Into You" is just as lovely to listen to with that tweaked vocal and the tiniest ebb of piano; not that lovely is a particularly D&B term. It's a gorgeous pair of tracks and you should grab both with all of your hands.
