Review: Brooding tech-house journeys with intense narratives are the order of the day once again on Berlin institution Stil Vor Talent, this time from ascendant Munich-based duo Yubik. "Brain Depository" is very moody indeed and features a furious broken beat accompanied by an epic hoover bassline you will not forget anytime soon. This is followed by the evocative dancefloor drama of "Sword of Lugia" (just wait for those charming flute sounds to kick in) and finishing off with "Schlangenmensch" which rounds off the release on a tribal note, as wind instruments and exotic modulations layer and intertwine throughout the track.
General Opinion (Murat Kilic remix) - (6:50) 124 BPM
Review: Worst Case are Tony Casanova & Joshua Jesse, teaming up to provide the popular sound of Berlin with some tough and adrenalised etch house on the Rocket EP. The title track provides brooding atmosphere, dark strings and wonky synth leads on this perfect journey track. "General Opinion" gets more bump and swagger on with this slinky tech house groove that's perfect t lead into the peak time; the hip-hop samples are a nice touch too! There's a few wicked remixes too we must say; are favourites being Clint Stewart's version of "Rocket" which makes it even more epic than the original, even putting more 'wonk' in the melody which works a treat. A worthy addition was Aussie Murat Kilic who also turns in a version of "General Opinion" which is super dark and tripped out for proper dancefloor adrenaline.
Review: The Last Trip was originally conceived as a series of events by Berlin-based institution Stil Vor Talent but has now sonically evolved into a new in-house series of compilations. By focusing on a handful of their current signings, they allow them to express themselves with not one, but two tracks each to really show off their style. Up first is Italy's Malandra Jr. with the brooding electro-tinged dystopia of "Utter", Frenchman Citizen Kain goes for that ethereal deep house sound that has become the trademark of the label recently on "Balance" fetauring Aves Volare's life-affirming monologue, while veteran Olivier Giacomotto knows house to rock the house as always on the epic "Moonshine" and they save the best for last with the ascendant Made In Paris taking the melodic tech house sound to further heights on the futuristic "Conjure".
Review: Congratulations to long-running Berlin label Still Vor Talent, which has now notched up no less than 200 releases. To celebrate this milestone, the label has put together this fine celebratory compilation featuring contributions from "old and new faces". Fittingly, it's arguably one of the imprint's strongest and most varied releases to date. Of course, there's plenty of typically Germanic fusions of deep house and tech-house present, but also the Arabic-influenced deep house exotica of Sam Shure, the rising, piano-laden dancefloor bliss of Oliver Koletzki's "Don't Take Yourself Too Seriously", the heavily electronic, club-ready psychedelia of Fideles ("Dark Stone") and the lilting melodies of Deorbiting's warm and picturesque "Warnsignal".
Review: Initially materialising as a fully fledged happening, Stil Vor Talent's latest compilation kicks off 2020 with a big bang. The Last Trip is a mini-compilation of party-friendly styles under the techno umbrella, rolled into 12 exclusive tracks - featuring legends and newcomers alike. There are two selections from Malandra Jr, with the seething banger "Poison" leading the charge, Citizen Kain is no stranger to the label either and his two contributions come in the from of the moody hypnotiser "Crush" followed by the adrenalised peak time groove "Balance". Elsewhere, Heerhorst get on his tunnel vision on the dark journey "Hydra", Transcode explores classic trance melodies and Reese basslines on the epic "Molecular Cloud", the ever reliable scene stalwart Olivier Giacamoto serves up the minimal tech house jam "Bonobo" and Made In Paris wraps up this fine package in style with the slick nightmoves of "Conjure".
Review: Up next on esteemed Berlin imprint Stil Vor Talent is a double header from two emerging talents. London base Frenchman Rafael Cerato who's appeared previously on labels like Beatfreak, Baroque and Elatics. From the tunnelling and esoteric progressive house of "Darkclaw" with its world music influence taking you deep into the exotic, or the brooding dancefloor drama of "Guru" which nails that Stil Vor Talent vibe so well. Those Ry Cooder-ish guitars that come in are a splendid touch too. Over to Manchester based Transcode next, who serves up the hypnotic and transcendental groove of "Orbital" and the brooding tension and suspense of "Skynet" which is sure to cause some strobed-out moments on the dancefloor.
Review: The elusive German duo Township Rebellion have returned from their winter hibernation with an invigorated energy as heard on the 'Rituals' EP. Stepping out with an edgier vibe, it sees them carrying forth the introspection of the dark season into a fresher and lively Spring offering - for a variety of moods and set times. The brooding tones of "Humanity Offline" soon give way to euphoria by way of its rich tapestry of melodies, while further dancefloor drama awaits on the slinky and hypnotic banger "Infinite Meadow". They save the best for last with their remix of a collaboration with label chief Oliver Koletzki titled "The Arctic Voice".
